Chapter 4 · Husaini, and the Khanzada’s Attack

ਕੇਤਕ ਦਿਨ ਕੇਤਕ ਬਰਸ, ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਗਏ ਬਿਹਾਇ । ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋ ਚੋਰਤ ਕਛੁ, ਤਿਨ ਤਿਨ ਮਾਰਜੋ ਘਾਇ ॥੧॥੧੦੫॥

ketak din ketak barasa, ih bidh gae bihāi | je prabh so chorat kachhu, tin tin mārajo ghāi |1|105|

Some days, some years, passed by in this way. Whoever did the Lord's people any wrong, him he struck and laid low.

ਖਾਨ ਦਿਲਾਵਰ ਆਇ ਕੈ, ਸੁਤ ਸੰਗਿ ਫਉਜ ਬਨਾਇ । ਤਿਨਨ ਕਹਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋ ਅਰੋ, ਨਿਮਖ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥੧੦੬॥

khān dilāvar āi kai, sut saṅg phauj banāi | tinan kahajo prabh so aro, nimakh bilamb nahīn lāi |2|106|

Dilawar Khan came, and with his son raised an army; he said to them: 'Go fight the Guru, and lose not a moment's delay.'

ਫਉਜ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਅਸਵਾਰ ਹਜਾਰ ਲੈ, ਜੁੱਧ ਕੇ ਕਾਜ ਦਲ ਸਾਜ ਆਯੋ । ਦਿਵਸ ਬੀਤਜੋ ਸਬੈ ਰੈਨ ਥੋਰੀ ਗਈ, ਭਯੋ ਅਸਵਾਰ ਡੰਕਾ ਬਜਾਯੋ । ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਨੀਰ ਤਿਹ ਤੀਰ ਠਾਢੇ ਭਏ, ਸਰਕ ਜਾਸੂਸ ਤਿਹ ਠਉਰ ਆਯੋ । ਲੋਕ ਦਰ ਪੈ ਤਬੈ ਦੇਤ ਚੌਕੀ ਸਬੈ, ਤਿਨਨ ਕੇ ਪਾਸ ਤਾ ਨੇ ਜਨਾਯੋ ॥੩॥੧੦੭॥

phauj sīgār asavār hajār lai, juddh ke kāj dal sāj āyo | divas bītajo sabai rain thorī gaī, bhayo asavār ḍaṅkā bajāyo | dekh kai nīr tih tīr ṭhāḍhe bhae, sarak jāsūs tih ṭhaur āyo | lok dar pai tabai det chaukī sabai, tinan ke pās tā ne janāyo |3|107|

Arraying his force, taking a thousand horse, he came with his host drawn up for battle. The whole day passed, and a little of the night; the horsemen advanced, sounding the drum. Seeing the river, they halted on its bank; and swiftly a spy came to that place — and the Guru's outpost guards marked them and gave word.

ਸ੍ਰਵਨਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਆਲਮ ਗਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋ ਕਹਜੋ ਬਿਚਾਰ । ਬਿਦਾ ਫਉਜ ਕੀਨੀ ਤਬੈ, ਅਪਨੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਧਾਰ ॥੪॥੧੦੮॥

sravanan sun ālam gayo prabh so kahajo bichār | bidā phauj kīnī tabai, apanī kripā dhār |4|108|

Alam heard it and came to the Lord and told what he thought; then the Guru, showing his grace, sent out a force.

ਫਉਜ ਲਲਕਾਰ ਸੰਭਾਰ ਹਥਿਆਰ, ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਕੈ ਮਾਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਧਾਏ । ਏਕ ਸੋ ਏਕ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਸੂਰਾ ਸਰਸ, ਭਏ ਅਸਵਾਰ ਡੰਕਾ ਬਜਾਏ । ਡੰਕ ਝਨਕਾਰ ਲਲਕਾਰ ਸੂਰਾਨ ਕੀ, ਸੁਨਤ ਹੀ ਖਾਨ ਖਾਨੇ ਸਿਧਾਏ । ਜਾਨ ਕੈ ਜੀਵ ਮੈ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਐਸੀ ਭਈ, ਅਨਿਕ ਹਜਾਰ ਦਲ ਉਮਡ ਆਏ ॥੫॥੧੦੯॥

phauj lalakār sambhār hathiāra, prakār kai mār hī mār dhāe | ek so ek balavant sūrā sarasa, bhae asavār ḍaṅkā bajāe | ḍaṅk jhanakār lalakār sūrān kī, sunat hī khān khāne sidhāe | jān kai jīv mai bhānt aisī bhaī, anik hajār dal umaḍ āe |5|109|

With war-cries the force took up their weapons and charged, crying 'strike, strike.' Warrior upon splendid warrior mounted and sounded the drum. At the ringing of the drums and the warriors' war-cries, the Khans took to their heels — it seemed as though many thousands had surged upon them.

ਭਜੇ ਖਾਨ ਤਾਹੀ ਸਮੈ, ਮਨ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਡਰ ਪਾਇ । ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਫਉਨਾ ਜਿਉ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੇ ਭਾਜੇ ਪੰਥ ਲਗਾਇ ॥੬॥੧੧੦॥

bhaje khān tāhī samai, man mai at ḍar pāi | mrig phaunā jiu siṅgh te bhāje panth lagāi |6|110|

The Khans fled that hour, great fear in their hearts; as a herd of deer flees from a lion, they took to the road in flight.

ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬਸਾਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋ, ਅਤਿ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਖੁਨਸਾਇ । ਬਰਵਾ ਗਾਂਵ ਉਜਾਰ ਕੈ, ਚਲੇ ਅਵਰ ਦਿਸ ਧਾਇ ॥੭॥੧੧੧॥

kachh na basānī prabh so, at man mai khunasāi | baravā gānv ujār kai, chale avar dis dhāi |7|111|

Nothing they tried availed them against the Lord; and burning with rage, they razed the village of Barwa and ran off in another direction.

ਗਯੋ ਖਾਨ ਜਾਦਾ ਹੁਸੈਨੀ ਪਠਾਯੋ । ਲਿਯੇ ਫੈਜ ਕੋ ਸੰਗਿ ਵਹ ਬੇਗ ਧਾਯੋ । ਰਹੇ ਮਾਰਗੰ ਬੀਚ ਰਾਜੇ ਅਪਾਰੀ । ਕਰੀ ਗੀਤਿ ਬਿਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਸੇ ਅਪਾਰੀ ॥੮॥੧੧੨॥

gayo khān jādā husainī paṭhāyo | liye phaij ko saṅg vah beg dhāyo | rahe māragan bīch rāje apārī | karī gīt biprīt tin se apārī |8|112|

The Khanzada — Rustam Khan, Dilawar Khan's son — then sent Husaini. Taking a force with him, he swiftly marched. Many rajas stood along the way, and he stirred up bitter enmity with them.

ਲਰਜੋ ਖੇਤ ਕੋ ਰੋਪ ਕੈ ਖਾਂ ਹੁਸੈਨੀ । ਕਰੀ ਰਾਜ ਸੰਗੰ ਉਨੈ ਬਾਤ ਪੈਨੀ । ਲਰਜੋ ਹਿੰਮਤੰ ਕਿੰਮਤੰ ਖੇਤ ਪਾਯੋ । ਹਰੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਕੇ ਜੋਰ ਧਾਯੋ ॥੯॥੧੧੩॥

larajo khet ko rop kai khān husainī | karī rāj saṅgan unai bāt painī | larajo himmatan kimmatan khet pāyo | harī siṅgh kripāl ke jor dhāyo |9|113|

Husaini Khan, planted firm on the field, gave battle, and traded sharp words with the rajas. Himmat Chand of Handur, a man of worth, took the field and fought; and Hari Singh of Guler charged with the force of Kripal Chand of Kangra.

ਲਿਯੇ ਸਾਤ ਸਿਖੰ ਕਿਯੋ ਲੋਹ ਭਾਰੇ । ਜੂਝੇ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੁਰਗੰ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ । ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜੁੱਧ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ਕੋ ਖਾਨ ਆਯੋ । ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਾਲ ਕੈ ਰਾਹ ਬੀਚੈ ਖਪਾਯੋ ॥੧੦॥੧੧੪॥

liye sāt sikhan kiyo loh bhāre | jūjhe saṅgatī siṅgh suragan sidhāre | prabh juddh ke het ko khān āyo | kripā kāl kai rāh bīchai khapāyo |10|114|

Bhai Sangatia Singh, with seven Sikhs — sent by the Guru to make peace among the hill rajas — made a heavy fight of steel. Sangatia Singh fought, and the Singhs departed to heaven, martyred. And when the Khan came against the Guru's men, by the will of the Timeless One he was destroyed upon the way.

ਖਾਨ ਹੁਸੈਨੀ ਜੁੱਧ ਕੋ ਬੜਜੋ ਸਕਲ ਦਲ ਸਾਜ । ਮਾਰਗ ਮੈ ਜੂਝਜੋ ਵਹੈ, ਲੋਹ ਲਾਜ ਕੈ ਕਾਜ ॥੧੧॥੧੧੫॥

khān husainī juddh ko baṛajo sakal dal sāj | mārag mai jūjhajo vahai, loh lāj kai kāj |11|115|

Husaini Khan advanced to battle, his whole force arrayed; and on the road he too fought and fell, for the honour of the sword.

ਕਉਤਕ ਅਉਰ ਕਿਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਘਨੇ । ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕੇ ਖੇਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕੋ ਬਨੇ । ਜਾ ਕੋ ਭੇਦ ਨੈਕ ਨਹਿ ਹੋਈ । ਤਾ ਕੋ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧੨॥੧੧੬॥

kautak aur kiyo prabh ghane | prabh ke khel prabh ko bane | jā ko bhed naik nah hoī | tā ko bhed na jānai koī |12|116|

Many other wondrous deeds the Lord performed — for the Lord's plays befit the Lord alone. He of whom not the least secret can be found — his mystery no one can ever know.
