The Vaisakhi Gathering at Anandpur
pur anand gur gobind siṅgha, ab kab karat bakhān | girad pahār apār ati, sataluj taṭ subh thān |1|117|
In the city of Anandpur dwelt Guru Gobind Singh — now the poet tells. Ringed by boundless mountains, on the bank of the Sutlej, a blessed place.
chet mās bītajo sakala, melā bhayo apār | baisākhī ke daras pai, satigur kiyo bichār |2|118|
The whole month of Chet passed, and a boundless fair had gathered. On the Vaisakhi day, before the sangat's eyes, the True Guru made his resolve.
saṅgat darasan karat saba, nagar nagar bisathār | hau dayāl darasan diyo, karanahār karatār |3|119|
The sangat came from city upon city for his darshan; and the merciful Creator-Lord gave them his sight.
gobind siṅgh karī khusī, saṅgat karī nihāl | kiyo pragaṭ tab khālasā, chukajo sarab jañjāl |4|120|
Guru Gobind Singh rejoiced and blessed the sangat; then he made the Khalsa manifest, and every entanglement was ended.
sab samūh saṅgat milī subh sataluj ke tīr | ketak sun bhae khālasā ketak bhae adhīr |5|121|
The whole assembled sangat gathered on the blessed bank of the Sutlej; hearing the call, some became Khalsa, and some grew hesitant.
Forsake the Masands; the One Lord Alone
taj masand prabh ek japa, yah bibek tahān kīn | satigur so sevak mile, nīr maddh jayon mīn |6|122|
Forsake the masands — the corrupt deputies — and meditate on the One Lord alone: this discernment he gave there. And the servant met the True Guru as a fish meets the water.
so sat saṅgat jāniyai jah bibek bichār | bin bhāgan nahīn pāiyai, jānat hai sansār |7|123|
Know that to be the true sangat where discernment and reflection dwell; without good fortune it is not found — this the world knows.
nem karat pūjā sakala, ek nām gobind | ek bār mukh te kaho, het anek anand |8|124|
All keeping the discipline, worshipping the one Name — says Gobind — say it but once from the mouth in love, and countless joys arise.
bachan kahat guradev ke sun man mīt bichār | man bach karam kar bhāvanī, saran tāh sukh sār |9|125|
Hearing the Guru's words — listen, friend of the heart, and ponder — with mind, word and deed given over in devotion, in his refuge lies the very essence of peace.
jih masatak sañjog hai, saran gahī tih ān | ik auḍe auḍe phirata, man mai karat gumān |10|126|
He whose brow bears the destined union comes and takes that refuge; while some wander about crooked, nursing pride in their minds.
moh māl saṅgat sakal kahī siṅgh gobind | mānai hukam bibek suni, tā ko karau anand |11|127|
'The whole sangat is my wealth,' said Gobind Singh; 'whoever accepts the command and hears with discernment — him I fill with joy.'
mān bachan sanamukh bhae, jin antar pratīt | eko nām nidhān japi, liyo janam tin jīt |12|128|
Accepting his word, those with faith within turned to face him; meditating on the one Treasure-Name, they won their birth.
gur gobind gobind guru, karanahār karatār | jagat udhāran āio, jānahu sab sansār |13|129|
The Guru is Gobind, Gobind is the Guru, the Doer, the Creator; he has come to save the world — know this, all the world.
bal mai karanahār niraṅkār kalā dhāra, jagat ke udhārabe gobind siṅgh āyo hai | asur saṅghārabe kau durajan ke mārabe kau, saṅkaṭ nivārabe kau khālasā banāyo hai | nindak kau nind daī sikh daī sikkhan kau, tā ke mahātam te rain divas dhayāyo hai | khālase ke sikhan kī nindak jo nind karai, jān bujh narak parai aise so batāyo hai |14|130|
The Formless One, the all-doing Wielder of power, has come as Gobind Singh to save the world. To end the cruel and strike down the wicked, to lift away all suffering, he has made the Khalsa. He gave the slanderer his due and gave the Sikhs their path; by his greatness, night and day, he is remembered. Whoever slanders the Sikhs of the Khalsa — know it well — falls into his own darkness: so it is declared.
jagat udhāran kārane, satigur kiyo bichār | kar masand tab dūr saba, niramal kar sansār |15|131|
To save the world the True Guru made his resolve; removing all the masands, he made the world pure.
The Khalsa Made Manifest
niramal kar sansār jagat mai bachan sunāe | kiyo khālasā pragaṭa, sunat durajan ḍar pāe | mānn jan karat bichār chār acharaj sun bhāī | gupat bāt bhaī pragaṭ ant guradev batāī | mānah su sant ih mant ko, janam jīt mukatā bhayo | kabitā su ren tih sikkh kī, ju satigur kī saranī ayo |16|132|
Purifying the world, he spoke his word within it; he made the Khalsa manifest, and hearing it the wicked took fright. The honoured ones reflected — hear, brother, on four wonders. What had long been hidden, the Guru-Lord now made open. The saint who takes this teaching wins his birth and is set free; and blessed as dust is the dust of that Sikh who has come to the True Guru's refuge.
so samarath kāran karana, tih samān nahīn koi | tā kī sevā so kare jisah prāpat hoi |17|133|
He is the all-powerful cause of causes; none is his equal. His service is done only by the one to whom it is granted.
bachan tāh biralo pahichānai | jā ko dayā karai soī jānai | gur sikhan ko bachan sunāyo | jo sikhan jag mai pragaṭāyo |18|134|
Rare is the one who knows his word; only he to whom the Guru shows mercy knows it. The Guru spoke his words to the Sikhs, and through the Sikhs made them manifest in the world.
sir gumman ke mukh nahīn lāgo | pāñchan ko sab saṅg tiyāgo | maran paran tin ke kachh hovai | tahān sikh nahīn jāi khalovai |19|135|
Do not keep company with the shorn-headed; forsake the fellowship of all the five groups that had broken from the Guru's house. Whatever befalls them in birth or in death, the Sikh does not go and stand there.
marane parane tās ke sikh na koī jāi | karanahār ko bachan hai, saṅgat diyo batāi |20|136|
To their births and their deaths no Sikh should go: this is the word of the Creator-Guru, given to the sangat.
The Discipline of the Khalsa
hukā tiāgo har gun gāvai | ichhā bhojan har ras pāvai | bhandarā tiāg karo re bhāī | tab sikhan yah bāt sunāī |21|137|
Forsake the hookah, and sing the Lord's praises; eat as you will, and gain the Lord's relish. Forsake the shaving of the hair, O brother — so the Guru told the Sikhs.
mātā pitā mare je koī | taū bhī kahit na bhaddar hoī | mātā pitā gobind hamārā | e sansārī jhūṭh pasārā |22|138|
Even if mother or father die, he says, do not shave in mourning. 'Gobind is our mother and father; these worldly ties are but a passing show.'
tā par bhaddar bhūl na kīje | yah upades sat kar līje | bhaddar bharam dharam kachh nāhī | nisache jān sat man māhī |23|139|
For that, make not the error of shaving; take this teaching for truth. Shaving is mere superstition, no part of dharma at all; know this for certain in your heart.
saṅgat bhaddar mat karo, khur nā lāvau sīs | māt pitā koī marai, satigur karī hadīs |24|140|
'Sangat, do not shave; set no razor to the head, even if mother or father die' — this instruction the True Guru gave.
mannat golak ar dasavandh | ghar mai rākho, tajo masand | bheṭ kār satigur kī hoi | jāi hajūr chaṛāvai soi |25|141|
The vowed offerings, the treasury, and the daswandh — the tenth of your earnings — keep in your own home; forsake the masand. The offering and service belong to the True Guru; let each go in person and present it before him.
aisī rīt rahit batarāī | santan sunī, adhik man bhāī | satisaṅgat mil darasan jāīai | darasan dekh bahut sukh pāīai |26|142|
Such a way of living he taught; the saints heard it, and it deeply pleased their hearts. Joining the true sangat, go for his darshan; and seeing it, great peace is found.
janam janam kā miṭai andherā | aisā darasan satigur kerā | aparādhī koū darasan karai | ek disaṭ mai vahu bhī tarai |27|143|
The darkness of lifetime upon lifetime is wiped away — such is the darshan of the True Guru. Even a sinner who takes his sight — in a single glance, he too is ferried across.
kiyo hai prakās lās chamakī chahūn or tahān, jot lajāvant bhayo sūraj ar chand hai | jāko darasan aiso duramat mal sagal khota, bin sat sakal pāp chhūṭat sabh band hai | khālase mai suphal sev karat hain sakal deva, aiso ju batāyo bhev upajat anand hai | kaho sikho vāhagurū vāhagurū vāhagurū, satigur satigur satigur gobind hai |28|144|
Such a light he kindled that its radiance flashed on all four sides; before it the sun and the moon were put to shame. His darshan washes away all the filth of evil-mindedness; without it sin remains, but by it every bond breaks and falls away. In the Khalsa all the powers of heaven do fruitful service; such is the secret told, and joy wells up. Say it, O Sikhs: Waheguru, Waheguru, Waheguru; the True Guru, the True Guru, the True Guru is Gobind.
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa
de darasan kīne bidā, mantr diyo prabh ek | kahat khālasā khālasā, aise karat bibek |29|145|
Giving them his darshan he sent them forth, and gave the one mantra; saying 'Khalsa, Khalsa,' so he gave them the discernment.
moh āsarā tāh ko, aise samarath soi | sarab dhār samarath prabhu, tā bin avar na koi |30|146|
'My whole support is his — such is that Almighty One; the all-sustaining, all-powerful Lord — without him there is no other.'
kiyo jad bachan satigur kāran karana, sarab saṅgat ād ant merā khālasā | mānegā hukam so to hovaigā sikh sahī, nā mānegā hukam so to hovaigā bihālasā | pāñch kī kusaṅgat taj saṅgat so prīt kare, dayā aur dharam dhār tiāge sab lālasā | hukā nā pīvai, sīs dāṛī nā muṇḍāvai, so to vāhagurū vāhagurū vāhagurū jī kā khālasā |31|147|
When the True Guru, the cause of causes, spoke: 'All the sangat, from first to last, is my Khalsa. Whoever accepts the command is a true Sikh; whoever accepts it not shall be undone. Forsaking the ill-company of the five, he loves the true sangat; holding to compassion and dharma, he lets go of all craving. He drinks no hookah, shaves not his head or beard — he is the Khalsa of Waheguru, Waheguru, Waheguru Ji.'
karanahār karatār hukam karate kīā | kar masand sabh dūr khālasā kar līā | mānah so pravān suphal tin kā jīā | un torī jam kī phāsa, nām amrit pīā | jī, jo tū karah su hoi, kīā soī thīā |32|148|
The Doer-Creator gave the command; removing all the masands, he made them Khalsa. Those who accept are approved, and fruitful is their life. They broke the noose of Death and drank the nectar of the Name. Lord, whatever you do comes to be; what you willed, that alone came to pass.
khāṇḍe kī pāhul daī, karanahār prabh soi | kiyo daso dis khālasā, tā bin avar na koi |33|149|
He gave the pahul of the khanda — the nectar stirred with the double-edged sword — that all-doing Lord; he raised the Khalsa in all ten directions; without him there is no other.
deh khāṇḍe kī pāhul tej baḍhāiā | jorāvar kar siṅgh hukam varatāiā | jih masatak sañjog tinī kamāiā | ik bhūle bharam gavāra, maram na pāiā | jī, un ke kachh nā hātha, dhuron phuramāiā |34|150|
Giving the pahul of the khanda he raised their inner fire, and making them mighty Singhs — lions — he spread his command. Those whose brows bore the union earned it; while some, fools lost in delusion, found not the mystery. Lord, nothing is in their hands — it is ordained from the Primal Source.
Your Command Is All Truth
dūtan ko saṅg sāth taji, duramat dehu jalāi | hukam terā sab sat hai, mānah narak na jāi |35|151|
'Forsake the company of the wicked; burn away evil-mindedness. Your command is all truth; whoever obeys it goes not into darkness.'
sir gumman ke marane parane nāhīn jāīai | pāñchan ke saṅg sāth nehu nahīn lāīai | taj prapañch bikār durat jalāīai | sat saṅgat pratāpa, narak na jāīai | jī, hukam terā sab sachu, sach sukhadāīai |36|152|
To the births and deaths of the shorn go not; with the five form no bond of love. Forsaking deceit and vice, burn away sin. By the glory of the true sangat, one is spared the pit. Lord, your command is all truth — truth, the giver of peace.
hukam terā sab sach hai, srāmī sirajanahār | kete bhūm bhūm pach mue, nah pāvat bīchār |37|153|
Your command is all truth, O Master, O Creator; many wore themselves to death, land upon land, yet never found the understanding.
bachan kīo karatāra, khur nahīn lāīai | man antar kar prīt bachan kamāīai | māt pitā mar jāi na bhadar karāīai | kete mānah nāh dhūm uṭhāīai | jī, hukam terā sab sachu, sach manāīai |38|154|
The Creator-Guru spoke: 'Set no razor to the head. With love within the heart, live by the Word. If mother or father die, do not have the head shaved.' Many accept it not, and raise a clamour. Lord, your command is all truth; let truth be honoured.
satigur ko upades suni, ride prīt kar lehu | bheṭ kār guradev kī avar hāth nahīn deh |39|155|
Hear the True Guru's teaching and take its love into your heart; the offering and service of the Guru — give it into no other hand.
karanahār kī bheṭ kisai nah dījīai | satigur ko upades sat kar lījīai | sat saṅgat mai baiṭh har gun gāīai | pūran hovai bhāg tab hī pāīai | jī, khālase kī aradāsa, nām japāīai |40|156|
Give the Creator-Guru's offering to no one else; take the True Guru's teaching for truth. Sitting in the true sangat, sing the Lord's praises; only when one's fortune is full is it found. Lord, this is the Khalsa's prayer: set them to chant your Name.
ek sikh sanamukh kīe, ek na mānah soi | jo nar simarai prīt kari, tā samān nahīn koi |41|157|
Some Sikhs turned to face the Guru, obedient; and some accepted not. The one who remembers the Name in love — none is his equal.
hukam terā sabh sachu, sach banavārīā | ik dharīe ik khālasā āpe dhārīā | ik mānah ik mannah nahīn gavārīā | ui badhe jam duār karah pukārīā | jī, jo tū karah su hoi, sach sirajan hārīā |42|158|
Your command is all truth, truth, O Lord. Some are unbelievers, and some he himself made Khalsa. Some obey; some fools obey not, and are bound at Death's door, and cry out. Lord, whatever you do comes to be, O true Creator.
ui duniyā raṅg rach rahe, jag so at ḍar pāi | jo jag kahajo su un kiyo, gur ke bachan bhulāi |43|159|
They stay steeped in the world's colours, in great dread of the world; whatever the world said, that they did, forgetting the Guru's words.
jo bhūle guraduāra, bāu na pāiā | māyā moh bikāra, mūṛ lapaṭāiā | kar bikhiyan so prīt janam gavāiā | hai dunīā khin ek bikh kī chhāiā | jī, mūrakh man agajāna, najar na āiā |44|160|
Those who forgot the Guru's door found no true direction; the fool clung fast to maya, attachment and vice. Loving poisons, he wasted his birth. The world is but a moment's shadow of poison; the ignorant fool, with his unknowing mind, never saw it.
jih jan upajat nām dhuni, tih jan niramal rīt | bhaj gobind bhae khālasā, jin antar paratīt |45|161|
In whom the melody of the Name wells up, that one's way is spotless; meditating on Gobind they became Khalsa — those with faith within.
pārabraham paramesar gur gobind hai | sarab ghaṭā pratipāl karat ānand hai | simarat nām punīt ṭūṭat phand hai | bhae khālasā soi chhoḍ masand hai | jī, pragaṭ bhae chahun or sūrajo chand hai |46|162|
The Supreme Brahm, the Supreme Lord, is Guru Gobind, cherishing every heart in bliss. Remembering the sacred Name, the noose breaks. They became Khalsa, forsaking the masand; and, Lord, they shone forth on all four sides like the sun and the moon.
The Faithful and the Faithless
ek pragaṭ khālas bhae, ekan kī yah rīt | andh kūp mah pach rahe, nāh tāh so prīt |47|163|
Some became manifest Khalsa; such is the way of these. Others wear themselves out in the dark pit, having no love for him.
andh kūp mai mūṛ giān na pāio | sant janā so nehu naik nahīn lāio | māyā moh bikār tāh lapaṭāio | man antar kar prīt nām na gāio | jī, jo kachh bhaī rajāi, tite val lāio |48|164|
In the dark pit the fool found no wisdom; he formed not the least love for the saints. Maya and attachment and vice clung to him; with no love in his heart, he sang not the Name. Lord, whatever your will was, in that direction he was turned.
jin ke man mai bhāv nahi, rachai prapañch bikār | sant sabhā milate nahīn, kajā jānah bīchār |49|165|
Those in whose minds there is no devotion, caught up in deceit and vice — they never join the saints' assembly; how should they know reflection?
har ko nām bisār pare majh dhāriā | man antar kar prīt na nām chitāriā | bhūle jag kī kān janam sab hāriā | jin japiā karatār tinah udhāriā | jī, khālasā saran duāra, karo nisatāriā |50|166|
Forgetting the Lord's Name, they fell into the whirlpool; with no love in the heart, they never recalled the Name. Lost in fear of the world's opinion, they lost their whole birth. Those who meditated on the Creator, them he saved. Lord, the Khalsa at your refuge-door — grant them deliverance.
jo karatā sab srisaṭ ko, tāh sadā man jāp | durat miṭai, haumai chhūṭai, sant janā pratāp |51|167|
The Creator of all creation — ever meditate on him within; sin is erased, ego released, by the glory of the saints.
sant janā pratāpa, durat miṭāvaṇī | man bach kar gobind sobhā gāvaṇī | sevā suphal anūpa, jo tudh bhāvaṇī | terī upamā apar apāra, bahut suhāvaṇī | terī gat mit lakhī na jāi, charan liv lāvaṇī |52|168|
By the glory of the saints, sin is wiped away. With mind and word, sing Gobind's praise. Service is fruitful and beyond compare, when it pleases you. Your praise is beyond all bound, most beautiful. Your state and measure cannot be known — let me fix my love upon your feet.
mar mar janamah anik bāra, chaurāsī biuhār | bin gur ṭhaur na pāvaī, dekhau ridai bichār |53|169|
Dying and dying, born again countless times — such is the round of the eighty-four lakh forms of life; without the Guru no resting-place is found: look, and reflect within your heart.
jo gur te bemukh bhae, tin ṭhaur na koī | mar mar janamah anik bāra, tin gat nahīn hoī | chaurāsī mai bharamate pāvat dukkh soī | dunīā kai raṅg rach rahai mūrakh hai soī | jī, un harinām na pāio, khaṭai so khoī |54|170|
Those who turned their face from the Guru find no resting-place; dying and dying, born countless times, they find no release. Wandering through the eighty-four, they suffer pain; absorbed in the world's colours, such a one is a fool. Lord, they never gained the Lord's Name; what they earned, they lost.
añchar gah satisaṅg ko, taj prapañch bikār | divas rain bīchārīai, man te dubidhā ṭār |55|171|
Grasp the hem of the true sangat; forsake deceit and vice. Day and night reflect, and cast all wavering from the mind.
bisiar duddh piāīai, ohu bikh nahīn chhorai | garadabh sugandh lagāīai, bhui sutā lorai | tummā hoi na miṭṭhaṛā, je khaṇḍ parorai | sunā pūchh ṭeḍhī rahai, kachh het na horai | jī, tiu kapaṭī hoi khālasā, satisaṅg na lorai |56|172|
Feed a snake milk, and it gives up not its venom. Perfume a donkey, and it still seeks the dust to roll in. The bitter colocynth turns not sweet, though you boil it in sugar. A dog's tail stays crooked, and no love will straighten it. So, Lord, a deceitful heart, even made Khalsa in name, never longs for the true sangat.
te nar uddhar pāīahi, jo man mah garabāh | jin ke man mai bhai nahīn, andhe andh kamāh |57|173|
Those men are turned aside from deliverance who nurse pride within; in whose hearts there is no awe of God — blind, they earn only blindness.
sat saṅgat mūl na jānanī, giān hor kamāiā | ui sat saṅgat so nā ḍarahi, un man garabāiā | jo sat saṅgat nā milahi, un janam gavāiā | hukam na mānah khasam kā, jin rāhu batāiā | jī, ui kapaṭī hoi na khālasā, ketā samajhāiā |58|174|
They know not the root of the true sangat; they practise some wisdom of their own. They fear not the true sangat; their minds are proud. Those who join not the true sangat waste their birth. They heed not the command of the Master who showed them the way. Lord, the deceitful never become Khalsa, however much they are taught.
anik jatan kar bār bāri, bin satisaṅg milāp | chaurāsī phir phir parata, miṭat na hi santāp |59|175|
Try as one may, again and again, without the union of the true sangat one falls again and again into the eighty-four, and the sorrow is never erased.
kunne de vich pāi ke dicche agg jalāi | koraṛ moṭh na sijjaī, ketā kare upāi | tiu kapaṭī saṅgat nā ralahi, un boliā kachh na sukhāi | us sir milan na likhio, bhambal bhuse khāi | jī, je satigur kripā kare, tā kichh kahī na jāi |60|176|
Put it in a pot and light a fire beneath — the hard bean will not soften, however much you try. So the deceitful never blends into the sangat; nothing he says gives comfort. On his brow union was never written; he wanders confused and lost. Yet, Lord, if the True Guru shows his grace, then no more need be said — for then all is possible.
khojat koṭ anek jana, sobhā apar apār | rach rachanā jin sab kiyo, so jānai karatār |61|177|
Crores of people search; his glory is beyond all bound. He who fashioned the whole of creation — that Creator alone knows himself.
A Hymn to the Boundless Creator
tū eko nām aneka, ant na pāīai | kar santan so prīti, bhram chukāīai | tā ko nām bisāra, aur kit jāīai | bahu biant karitāra, rain din gāīai | jī, khālas kī aradāsa, charanī lāīai |62|178|
You are One, and your Names are many; your end is never found. Love the saints, and cast off all doubt. Forgetting his Name, where else would one go? The boundless Creator — sing him night and day. Lord, this is the Khalsa's prayer: keep me at your feet.
moh āsaro tāh ko, aise samarath soi | sarab dhār samarath prabhu, tā bin avar na koi |63|179|
My whole support is his — such is that Almighty One; the all-sustaining, all-powerful Lord — without him there is no other.
kar kirapā gobinda, nām kīno mayā | uh baḍabhāgī jug māhi, nām jin jap layā | binase sagal kalesa, kūṛ tan te gayā | niramal bhae sarīra, jīv mai bhau bhayā | jī, so jan taj abhimāna, sant saranī payā |64|180|
Gobind showed his grace and gave the gift of the Name. Blessed in this age is the one who has chanted it. All sorrows were destroyed, and falsehood left the body. The body grew pure, and awe of God arose in the soul. Lord, that person forsook his pride and fell at the saints' refuge.
kar kripā prabh āpanī, pur hī lae milāi | jo dhur mile so mil rahe, kahī kahan nah jāi |65|181|
Showing his own grace, the Lord drew them into his presence; those united from the Primal Source stay united — it cannot be told.
ikanī kripā dhāri, bakhas milāiā | ikanī bharam bhulāi, utar pāiā | ek pae asagāhi, kūṛ kamāiā | ikanī ditto nāmu, hukam manāiā | jī, ek rahe darabāra, jā tudh bhāiā |66|182|
On some he showed grace, and forgave and united them; some he let wander in doubt, and cast them out. Some fell into the fathomless deep, earning only falsehood. To some he gave the Name and made them obey his command. Lord, some remained at your court, as it pleased you.
ād ant tih purakh kī, nautan kathā apār | baran baran thak thak rahe, koū na pāvat pār |67|183|
The beginning and end of that Person, his ever-fresh tale, is boundless; poets telling and telling grow weary, yet none finds its far shore.
tū sachā karatār hai, terā ant na pārā | pritapālak sansār ko, sach sirajanahārā | jin tū simario ant bāra, tis pār utārā | rach rachanā kal dhārīā bahu bidh bisatārā | jī, līlā lakhī na jāi kichhu, tū karanehārā |68|184|
You are the true Creator; your end and limit are never found. Cherisher of the world, the true Creator. Whoever remembered you at the last hour, him you ferried across. Fashioning creation, you held it all by your power, spread in countless ways. Lord, your play cannot be known at all — you are the Doer of all.
nāh na ant biant prabhu, upamā apar apār | ram rahio sab srisaṭ mahi, kahat bichār bichār |69|185|
The boundless Lord has no end; his praise is beyond all bound. He pervades the whole of creation — so say it, reflecting again and again.
sarab nirantar āpi, eko hai dhanī | terī upamā apar apāra, sach sobhā banī | tuh simarai sant aneka, gaṇatī kiā ganī | pare saran darabār chhoḍ man te manī | jī, tū eko nām anek srisaṭ simarai ghanī |70|186|
Present within all things, you alone are the Master. Your praise is beyond all bound, your glory truly made. Countless saints remember you — how could their number be told? They fell at your refuge-court, casting all pride from the mind. Lord, you are One, your Names many; much of creation remembers you.
kiu sahīai jam trāsa, jo japīai karatār gun | mukat bhae nar soi, jin antar bhaī ek dhun |71|187|
Why suffer the dread of Death, if one meditates on the Creator's virtues? Those men were set free in whom the one melody arose within.
jahān dūtan ko trāsa, parat jamajāl sā | sāchā nām punīt oṭ bhaī ḍhāl sā | binasai sagal kales gayo jañjāl sā | chukajo āvan jāna, miṭī sab lālasā | jī, khālas jap gobinda, bhayo hai khālasā |72|188|
Where the wicked feel dread, where Death's net falls — the true and sacred Name became a shield and a shelter. All sorrows are destroyed, the entanglement gone; coming and going ceased, and every craving erased. Lord, meditating on Gobind, the pure one has become Khalsa.
Behold the Khalsa
ho kai udās | khālas pragās | apare apār | sambhār vār |73|189|
Grown free of the world, the pure Khalsa shines forth — boundless, beyond measure — and the Guru set it going.
gurabachan kīn | sun saban līn | rid māh dhār | kīno bichār |74|190|
The Guru gave his Word; all heard it and took it in; holding it in the heart, they reflected upon it.
tajīai masand | sab tor phand | taj pañch saṅg | rach ek raṅg |75|191|
Forsake the masands, and break every snare; forsake the company of the five, and be dyed in the one colour of the Lord.
khālas sarūp | anūp rūp | gah teg līn | at juddh kaun |76|192|
The Khalsa's form — a matchless form; the sword in its grip — who is its equal in mighty battle?
kete ḍakār | tā ko bithār | jodhā apār | kar juddh sār |77|193|
How many raise the war-cry! how vast their spread — boundless warriors, waging the war of steel.
bibekan bichār | tanakhāh dhār | basudhā sudhār | kar jagat sār |78|194|
With discernment and reflection, holding to the discipline, they reform the earth and set the world aright.
pāsā sudhār | khele khilār | nagare apār | tin ke majhār |79|195|
Setting the dice aright, the Player plays his game; and within them lie cities without number.
anand rūp | sundar sarūp | aise nihār | gur kes dhār |80|196|
The very form of bliss, of beautiful form — behold him so: the Guru who keeps the unshorn kesh, Gobind Singh.
