Chapter 6

Chapter 6 · Bachan Bichar — Reflection on the Word

The young Panth learns to live by its discipline: the sangat takes the vow at Delhi, some hold back and stray, and the poet turns to a ringing song of the One Name that alone carries a life across.

The Creator's Word: Live as the Guru's Khalsa

bachan kiyo karanahāra, santan kiyo bichāra, supano sansār jān kāhe lapaṭāīai | bikhian so taj saneha, satigur kī sikh leha, binasai chhin māh dehi, jam pur na jāīai | sīs na muṇḍāv mīta, hukkā taj bhalī gīti, man mai kar prem prīt saṅgat mai jāīai | jīvan din chāra, samajh dekh bujh man bichāra, vāhagurū gurū jī kā khālasā kamāīai |1|197|

The Creator has spoken, and His saints have pondered it well: know the world for a passing dream — why cling to it so tightly? Cast off your love of vice and take the True Guru's teaching to heart; this body crumbles in a moment, yet you need not go to the city of Death. Do not shave your head in mourning, my friend; give up the hookah — that is the better way; hold love and tenderness in your heart, and go to the sangat. Life is but four short days — see it, weigh it, ponder it in your mind — and earn the life of the Guru's own Khalsa, crying ‘Waheguru!’

The Sangat Takes the Vow at Delhi

tab dillī main āi kai sabh so kahī sunāi | ketan mānī prīt kari, ketan daī bhulāi |2|198|

Then the word was carried to Delhi and told aloud to all. Some took it up with love; some let it slip from mind.

baranat āge kī kathā, bhaī nagar mai soi | karanahār karatā dhanī, jo kachh karai so hoi |3|199|

The poet now tells what came after — all that unfolded in the city. The Creator, the Doer, the Master — whatever He wills comes to pass.

darasan te jab saṅgat āī | gupat bāt lai pragaṭ sunāī | kiyo bibek dharam tahān sālā | sun bibek sikkhan sabh pālā |4|200|

When the sangat gathered for darshan, they took the hidden matter and made it plain. There, in the dharamsala, they set down the way of discernment — the path of bibek — and hearing it, all the Sikhs upheld it.

kar pāhul sabh saṅgat chākhī | pāñch pāñch sikh kiyo sākhī | khatrī bāhamaṇ dui rahe nirārā | un apane manamāh bichārā |5|201|

They gave the whole sangat the pahul — the amrit — to taste; five by five, the Sikhs stood as witnesses. But two — a Khatri and a Brahmin — held themselves apart, turning it over in their own minds.

Two Hold Back, and Doubt Spreads

brāhamaṇ hoi kai bhadar na kījai | jag mai sobh kavan bidh lījai | ih bidh anik bharam bharamāne | karanahār ke bachan bhulāne |6|202|

‘Being a Brahmin, one must not shave the head — how then would we keep our honour in the world?’ In this way they wandered through doubt upon doubt, and forgot the words of the Creator.

ketak kahat bachan at bhārī | kulā karam chhūṭat biuhārī | ketak kahat inai mat kīnā | satigur hukam nahīn kachh dīnā |7|203|

Some spoke words weighty and grim: ‘Our clan-rites and our customs will be lost!’ Some said, ‘These men have made up a creed of their own — the True Guru gave no such command.’

ketak kahat likhā kachh āvai | tab yah bachan kamājā jāvai | ketak sun kai prīt lagāī | tinahu ṭhaur jagat mai pāī |8|204|

Some said, ‘Let it first come to us in writing; only then let this teaching be practised.’ But some, hearing, fixed their love upon it — and they found their true place in the world.

ketak sun kai kuṭamb tiāge | jin ko bachan amolak lāge | aṅg saṅg tin ke prabh jāno | prabh saṅgī teī pahichāno |9|205|

Some, hearing, forsook even their households — those to whom the priceless words rang true. Know that the Lord is ever at their side; recognize them as the companions of the Lord.

Where Love Is, the Lord Is Near

prabh tih nikaṭ bakhāniyai, jin antar pratīt | prīt binā kiv pāiyai, jāh koṭ jug bīt |10|206|

Call the Lord near to the one who carries faith within. Without love, how can He be found, though ten million ages pass?

dharamasāl saṅgat jab āvai | darasan pārabraham ko pāvai | gurū saṅgat kachh bhed na hoī | mun jan kathā bakhānat soī |11|207|

When the sangat comes to the dharamsala, it wins the darshan of the All-Pervading Lord. Between the Guru and the sangat there is no difference at all — so the silent sages have always told.

kar darasan duramat mal chhījai | upajai gajān bhalā kachh kījai | icchhā man mai jo kachh āvai | kar aradās turat hī pāvai |12|208|

By that darshan the filth of a corrupted mind is scoured away; wisdom is born, and good deeds follow. Whatever wish rises in the heart, make your ardas — and it is granted at once.

e pratāp khālase māhī | samasar tās or koū nāhīn | jo im jānai tih gat hoī | tih kī padavī lahai na koī |13|209|

Such is the glory that lives within the Khalsa — nowhere is there its equal. Whoever knows this comes to that same state, and no one can measure his rank.

sikh āsaro tāh ko, sās sās din rain | ek gharī saṅgat binā, parat nāh tih chain |14|210|

The Sikh's whole refuge is in Him, breath by breath, by day and by night. Without the sangat, even for a single hour, he can find no peace.

One Is Set Apart

prathamai jāt su khatrī ek | tān par saṅgat kiyo bibek | bānh pakar kai dehu uṭhāi | kaho ise apane ghar jāi |15|211|

First there was one of the Khatri caste; upon him the sangat used its discernment. ‘Take him by the arm and raise him up; tell him to go home to his own house.’

sir gum nām tāh ṭhaharāyo | prithamai sikkhan usah uṭhāyo | krodhavant man mai at bhayo | ūch nīch mukh te kachh kahayo |16|212|

They fixed upon him the name of an outcast, and the Sikhs were the first to lift him out. Great wrath rose in his mind, and from his mouth came words both high and low.

tab vahu ek or ke āyo | usah ān kai bhed batāyo | ab lau aisī kabah na dekhī | naī bāt in kī im pekhī |17|213|

Then he went off to one man, and to another, and carried the secret to him, and told it: ‘Never until now have I seen the like — this new practice of theirs I have seen with my own eyes.

in mo so aihī karī, kar gah diyo uṭhāi | sun prītam kajā kījiyai, ab moh dehu batāi |18|214|

This very thing they did to me — took me by the hand and cast me out. Listen, my friend: tell me now — what is to be done?’

A Friendship Against the Sangat

tab dusar chintā chit karī | ab to bāt kaṭhin bidh parī | sun bhāī, kachh kahin na jāī | mahān prabal bidh tum uṭhāī |19|215|

Then the other turned the worry over in his heart: ‘Now the matter has fallen out hard. Listen, brother — there is no telling it; you have stirred up a mighty storm.

burā bhalā sabh ko ve kahite | ham bī sun kai chup hoi rahite | diṛ kar rākhe apane chīt | jo hai daii chār din bīt |20|216|

They speak good and ill of everyone; we too hear it and keep still. Hold your heart firm within you — whatever is to be will pass in four days' time.’

tab un kachh ik bhojan kīā | harakhe tus mit ko dīā | bhojan kar kai adhik aghāyo | tab santokh tāh man āyo |21|217|

Then that man prepared a little food and gladly set it before his friend; eating his fill and more, contentment came at last to his mind.

chit chintā kāhe karo, kavan uṭhāvanahār ? sobh tihārī nagar mai, jānat sabh sansār |22|218|

‘Why does the heart fret so? Who is there to cast you out? Your good name fills the city — all the world knows it.’

jab vā ke un bhojan kīā | bhojan khāi nīr kachh pīā | tab vā ke man dhīraj āyo | prītam ne kachh bhalā sunāyo |23|219|

When he had eaten of that food and drunk a little water, patience came into his mind; his friend had spoken kindly to him.

ab to bāt dusarī bhaī | tan man kī sabh chintā gaī | dīpat prīt bhānt yah hoī | jalai pataṅg dīp par soī |24|220|

‘Now the matter has turned another way; every worry of body and mind is gone.’ A love flared up between them — as the moth burns upon the lamp.

ih bidh jīv duhan mil kīnā | jaise prīt het jal mīnā | jiu kāmī kāman bas āvai | lok lāj man te bisarāvai |25|221|

In this way the two souls were made one — like the love that binds the fish to water; as a man in the grip of desire is bound to the one he craves, and casts the world's shame clean from his mind.

jaise kāmī kām mai, rain divas man hoi | lok lāj man te tajai, honī hoi su hoi |26|222|

As a man sunk in desire keeps it in mind by night and by day, and throws off the shame of the world — come what may, let it come.

The Sangat Reconciles, Then Must Act Again

tab dusar sikh sikhan mai āyo | sikhan bhed kahī sun pāyo | tab vā ko un pūchhan kīnā | kāhe bhojan tai un dīnā |27|223|

Then a second Sikh came among the Sikhs, and heard the secret they had learned. They put the question to him: ‘Why did you give that man food?

vah to sir gum haman uṭhāyo | tai kih bidh ghar mai biṭhalāyo ? hāth jor kai aise kahayo | bakhas lehu aṅgun yah bhayo |28|224|

He is the outcast we lifted out and cast away — how could you seat him in your house?’ Joining his hands, he answered so: ‘Forgive me — this fault was mine.’

sabh sikhan mil ik man kīnā | tab vāko milāi kar līnā | ab uh so tum prīt na kariho | jo kachh kaho soī man dhariho |29|225|

All the Sikhs became of one mind, and then took him back into their fold: ‘Now keep no love with that one; whatever we tell you, hold it in your heart.’

satigur saṅgat ek hai, jau jānai nar koi | mārai bakhasai āp hī, tih bin nāhī koi |30|226|

The True Guru and the sangat are one — should any person come to know it. He alone strikes down and He alone forgives; without Him there is none other.

ketak din jab bhae bitītā | adhik tās tāhī saṅg prītā | pragaṭ bāt sikhan jab sunī | ketan sun kai muṇḍī dhunī |31|227|

When some days had gone by, his love for that man only grew the deeper. When the Sikhs heard the matter now spoken openly, some shook their heads to hear it.

ek sikh ke ausar bhaio | tab dusar sikhan mai gaio | tab sabh sikhan sīkh batāī | bānh pakar kai diyo uṭhāī |32|228|

When the occasion came for that one Sikh, he went again among the other Sikhs; then all the Sikhs pronounced their teaching — and took him by the arm and cast him out.

ketak saṅgī avar uṭhāe | krodhavant apane ghar āe | kop kiyo man mai at bhārā | sabhā jor kai kiyo bichārā |33|229|

Several more of that company were cast out too, and in anger they went home. Great fury rose within their minds; they called an assembly and took counsel.

kapaṭ bain kahito gayo, karī naī in rāh | samajh bāt karate nahīn, kar gah deh uṭhāh |34|230|

‘Speaking words of deceit he went about, and made of this a new road of his own. They will not weigh the matter — they only seize a man and cast him out.’

The Gathering at Dara's Bazaar

tab grih mai āyo nar soī | upajayo krodh tapat tan hoī | ketak sikhan liyo bulāī | hoi ikatr sabh baiṭhe jāī | baiṭhe sabh jāī, bāt chalāī, suniho bhāī, kajā kījai ? rahinā jag māhī, in madhāhī, kiuṅkar tajāg su kar dījai ? marane ar parane kul biuhārā, inai bichārā dūr karai | milīai sabh saṅge, ho ik raṅge, satigur simaro pār parai |35|231|

Then that man came home, and wrath rose in him till his body burned. He called some of the Sikhs together, and they gathered and sat down as one. Sitting all together, they opened the talk: ‘Listen, brothers — what is to be done? We must live on in the world — how then, among these people, are we to be cast off and renounced? Let us put far from us all thought of death-rites and clan-customs; let us all meet together, be of one single hue, and remember the True Guru — and cross over.’

Night and day remember Him; ponder Him by day and by dark. He is the Creator of all creation — He alone ferries us across.

tab vā ne ik bāt bichārī | kar ikatr saṅgat sabh sārī | ab upāv aise kachh kījai | in kī bāt dūr kar dījai |37|233|

Then that man thought of a plan, and gathered the whole sangat together. ‘Now let us find some device to set their matter aside.’

sarab saṅgat aur bī kete | bhae ikaṭhe the sabh jete | in mil kai ik melā kīnā | nāī pher nagar mai dīnā |38|234|

The whole sangat, and many others besides — as many as had come together — held a gathering of their own, and sent the barber round the city to cry it.

sabh saṅgat tih ṭhaur bulāī | kathā jīv kī sabhan sunāī | dārā pur melā ṭhaharāyo | bhed sabhai saṅgat te pāyo |39|235|

They called the whole sangat to that place and told them all the tale. They fixed the gathering at Dara's quarter, and drew the secret out from all who came.

dārā ke bājār mai, melā bhayo apār | darabavant dui khatrī, tā ne kahayo pukār |40|236|

In the bazaar of Dara a vast throng gathered; and two wealthy Khatris there cried out aloud:

tum ju haman dharīā ṭhaharāyo | kāḍho hukam tumai kachh āyo | hukkā pīvai sīs muṇḍāī | ju tumare man mai āvai bhāī |41|237|

‘You who have branded us freethinkers — issue whatever order you please! Whether a man smokes the hookah or shaves his head — whatever comes to your mind, brother —

hamare bāt ihī bidh hoī | bhāvai tumai karo sabh koī | jo tum gunahagār ṭhaharāvai | milai na hamare koī āvai |42|238|

with us the matter simply stands so; do as every one of you wishes. But if you rule us guilty men, then let none come to join with us.’

tab sun kai sabh hī chup dhārī | milan kāj yah bāt bichārī | dhann dhann kah uṭhe pukāre | jag mai bāt bhalī im sāre |43|239|

Then, hearing this, they all fell silent; and for the sake of reconciling, they weighed it. ‘Blessed, blessed!’ they cried aloud — and so they all deemed it a fine thing in the world.

Wait for the Guru's Writ

jau lag likhā hajūr kā, āvai saṅgat māh | tab lag sabh so mil raho, nahīn karo kachh nāh |44|240|

‘Until the writ from the Presence comes into the sangat, stay joined with everyone till then; do nothing rash at all.’

tab un hī jāhagā ik dīnī | tahā ikaṭhī saṅgat kīnī | khulī bāt sabh ne ṭhaharāī | sabh so mel karo re bhāī |45|241|

Then they gave over a place, and gathered the sangat there. All laid the matter down in the open: ‘Make your peace with everyone, O brothers.’

giāras ek mel jab kīnā | jah upades sabhan ko dīnā | pitā purakhī hai jo hoi āī | so karīai, aise batarāī |46|242|

On the eleventh day they held a gathering, and there they gave the teaching to all: ‘Whatever has come down from our fathers and forefathers — let us keep to that,’ so they said.

ketan ke sun man chit āī | bhalī bāt kīnī hai bhāī | ketan kahayo rahit nahīn hoī | ham te bāt na mānai koī |47|243|

Hearing it, it settled in the hearts of some: ‘You have done a good thing, brother.’ But some said, ‘There is no such discipline; from us no one will take a word.’

rahat tajāg tin nai karī, bhae khulāse soi | khās bachan jāne nahīn, karatā kare so hoi |48|244|

These forsook the discipline and became the free-livers. They did not know the Guru's own word — yet whatever the Creator does comes to pass.

Whoever Forsakes the Word

karatā kare su hoi, rahit tinahu sabh tajāgī | sat saṅgat so prīt tori, bikhian so lāgī | gur ke bachan bisāri, kiyo bīchār khulāsā | kahat khālasā nāh hot jam pur tih bāsā | aise bichār man mīt kari, sakal bharam taj dījiyai | bachan kiyo kāran karana, sat sat sabh kījiyai |49|245|

What the Creator does comes to pass — and these cast off the whole discipline. Breaking their love from the true sangat, they clung instead to their vices. Forgetting the Guru's word, they reasoned themselves free. But the Khalsa says: it is not so — for such a one, the dwelling is in the city of Death. Reflect on this, O friend of my heart, and let every delusion go. The Word is the Cause of all causes — hold it, all of it, as true, forever true.

bachan kiyo karatāra, sun mere man prīt kar | gae bisār gavāra, tin kī karī na chīt dhar |50|246|

The Creator has spoken: ‘Listen, my heart — give your love to Me.’ The fools went off forgetting; take no further thought of them.

khālasā bisār kai udhār kiyo chāhat hai, so to ab kahu nāh aise kar jāniyai | jaise kar mīn chhīn nīr binā tajai prāna, aise gur sabad binā mūrakh bakhāniyai | chillā jo nāh kamāna, kaise kai chalāvai bāna, man mai kar dekh gajān aise pahichāniyai | chalanī jo rahit chhāna, mūrakh hai tā samāna, satigur ke bachan kān sun kai na māniyai |51|247|

He who hopes to save himself by forgetting the Khalsa — say now, it can never be; know it for a certainty. As the fish, robbed of its water, gives up its very life, so without the Guru's Word, know a man for a fool. The bow that has no string — how shall it loose the arrow? Look with your mind and see; know it thus. The sieve that keeps no mesh — the fool is just like that, who hears the True Guru's words in his ears and will not heed them.

prabh ke bachan bisār kai, mīt kiyo sansār | man mai avar bichārate, bhūlat bharam gavār |52|248|

Forgetting the words of the Lord, he made the world his friend; turning other things over in his mind, the fool strays lost in delusion.

Blessed Are They Who Hold the One Name

man te taj lāj akāj kiyo, jin ko durabudh prakās kiyo hai | krodh mahā hiradai tin ke, jin ke dig pāp nivās kiyo hai | jhūṭh kī bātan so lipaṭe, aṭake sat saṅgat mai su kiyo hai | dhann teī jan dhann sadā, jin ek hī nām adhār kiyo hai |53|249|

They cast shame from their minds and did what ought not to be done — they whom a crooked wisdom lit and led; great wrath is in their hearts, they in whom sin has made its home; wrapped in words of falsehood, they are shut out from the true sangat. But blessed, forever blessed, are those souls who have made the One Name alone their support.

jibhajā ras tajāge sakala, ek bhajan so kām | suphal janam tih jāniyai, nis din simare nām |54|250|

Give up all the cravings of the tongue; let devotion be your one true work. Know that birth to be fruitful which remembers the Name by night and day.

The Name Is Niranjan: In Praise of the One

nām nirañjan hai prabh soī | pragaṭayo sāt dīp tihu loī | nav khaṇḍan mai jot tihārī | simarai mun jan vār na pārī |55|251|

The Name is Niranjan, the Stainless One — that very Lord; He shines out through the seven islands and the three worlds. Your light fills the nine regions of the earth; the sages remember You, and find neither this shore nor the far one.

anagan koṭ japai tuh kete | sagal srisaṭ mai prānī jete | man bach karam satigur ko dhajāvai | tih pratāp jon nahīn āvai |56|252|

Countless millions past all reckoning chant Your Name — every living being in all creation. Whoever adores the True Guru in thought, word and deed — by His glory comes no more into birth.

vai jon na āvai man chit lāvai, sabad kamāvai, bhagat karai | sevai nar soī, jih par hoī, bin dekhe pur kaun tarai | kis hī kar nāhīn, is jag māhī, jo nar koī sakat dharai | karatā prabh soī, avar na koī, jo simarai so pār parai |57|253|

He comes not again into birth who fixes his mind and heart, who lives the Word and does devotion. That man alone truly serves, on whom His grace has fallen — for who has ever crossed over without beholding Him? No one in all this world holds any power of his own. The Creator-Lord is the only One; there is no other — and whoever remembers Him crosses over.

patit udhāran bhai harana, sumat tāh sukh sār | soī prabh im rūp hai, jin sirajayo sansār |58|254|

Uplifter of the fallen, remover of fear — to the wise of heart, the very essence of peace. Such is the form of that Lord, who fashioned the whole world.

hai prabh soī, karai su hoī, avar na koī, so karatā | jā ko sabh gāvai, nau nidh pāvai, aparampar dukh ko haratā | sabh jag jānai, mun jan mānai, gaṇ gandharav tih sev karai | aisā prabh svāmī, antarajāmī, dev koṭ totīs dharai |59|255|

He is the Lord; what He does comes to be; there is none other — He is the Creator. Him all creatures sing; from Him the nine treasures are won; the Boundless One, the taker-away of sorrow. All the world knows Him, the sages own Him, the hosts of heaven and the gandharvas serve Him. Such a Lord and Master, the Knower of every heart, whom thirty-three million gods hold in awe.

sās sās simaro sadā, divas rain bīchār | uttam kriā ju karat hai, so ganiyai sansār |60|256|

Breath by breath remember Him always; ponder Him by day and by night. The noblest deed a person does — that alone is counted, in all the world.

karanahār jānat sabh soī | bāhar bhes kihī bidh hoī | tāte gupat kachh nahīn rahai | jānat sabh kichh bin hī kahe |61|257|

The Creator knows every soul, whatever outward guise it wears; from Him nothing stays hidden — He knows all things, though never a word be told.

hai samarath prabh agam bakhānai | tan man kī bithā sabh jānai | prabh pūran karatā prabh soī | tā bin katahu avar na koī |62|258|

The Lord is all-powerful, and called unfathomable; He knows all the aching of body and mind. The Lord is perfect, the Lord is the Doer of all; without Him there is no other, anywhere.

avar na koī, chahu dis soī, pragaṭ purakh hai ek dhanī | sevak jo gāvai, nau nidh pāvai, durajan kī nahīn rahit manī | kete gun gāvai, so sukh pāvai, tin ko jas jag māh banī | karatā prabh vohī, karai so hoī, un kī sobhā unah banī |63|259|

There is none other; on all four sides is He alone — the one Master, the Being made manifest. The servant who sings Him gains the nine treasures, and of the wicked-hearted not a trace remains in his mind. However many sing His praises win that peace, and their fame is made throughout the world. That Creator-Lord is the only One; what He does comes to be; and their glory is theirs alone to keep.

੬ ॥ Here ends the sixth chapter of the book Sri Gur Sobha — the Reflection on the Word. May it be complete; may it be blessed.
