The Lord Does as He Wills; Hold to the Sangat
har prabh chāhe so kare, burā bhalā jih hāth | saṅgat bin nahīn pāīai, samajh dekh yah bāt |1|260|
The Lord Hari does whatever He wills — good and ill are both in His hand. Without the sangat He is not found — grasp this truth and see.
so man mai kar dekh bichāra, japai karatār tabai gat hoī | dukh mai bhukh mai sukh mai tuh ko, hoi sahāi karatā prabh soī | dīn dayāl sadā prabh pūrana, tāh binā kachh avar na koī | aisī jagat mai jot tihārī, bichārī su yā kab kī gat joī |2|261|
Turn it over in your mind and see: chant the Creator's Name, and only then comes release. In sorrow, in hunger, in ease, He alone — the Creator-Lord — comes to your aid. Ever merciful to the meek, the perfect Lord — without Him there is nothing, no one else. Such is Your light throughout the world; pondering it, the poet has found his own way across.
añchar gah satisaṅg ko, taj prapañch bikār | divas rain bīchāriyai, patit udhāranahār |3|262|
Catch the hem of the holy company, and leave off deceit and vice. Ponder Him by day and by night — the Uplifter of the fallen.
A Sikh's Spotless Way, and the Village Turns
ek sikkh niramal yah rīt | antaragat satigur son prīt | hukam pāi un deh tajāgī | ant samai gur so livalāgī |4|263|
One Sikh kept this spotless way: inwardly, his love was for the True Guru alone. Receiving the Command, he laid down his body; at the last moment his whole mind was fixed in love with the Guru.
tā par bhadar kiyo na bhāī | jāt lok sabh diyo uṭhāī | tā par charachā chalī apārā | bhayo ikatr nagar sabh sārā |5|264|
Over him no head-shaving rite was performed, brother; and the caste-folk cast him all aside. A boundless uproar arose about it, and the whole town gathered as one.
in so banaj karo mat koī | kul kī chāl inai sabh khoī | tab pañchan mil likhat karāde | bed su sat sat likhavāde |6|265|
‘Let no one trade with these people; they have thrown away all the ways of the clan!’ Then the elders met and had a writ drawn up, and made it declare: ‘The Veds are true, forever true.’
The Writ of Boycott — and the Sangat Floats It Away
in siu savadā mat karahu, nah kuṭamb biuhār | jo āge kul mai bhaī, so varate sansār |7|266|
‘Do no dealing with them, keep no household ties; whatever has come down in the clan of old, let that alone hold in the world.’
yah bichār pañchan mil kīnā | ketan mil kar mant su dīnā | in so bāt bhānt yah kījai | in kī bāt chalan nahīn dījai |8|267|
This the elders resolved together, and gathering, gave out their counsel: ‘Deal with them in just this way; let their cause gain no ground at all.’
inai rāh ik naī chalāī | satigur inai nahīn batalāī | ih bidh kar kai likhat karāde | ketak jīv jāi likh āe |9|268|
‘They have started up a new road — the True Guru never told them so.’ Having it thus, they had a writ made; and some folk went and set their names to it.
ketan likh kai diyo bahāī | yahī bāt saṅgat batalāī | kar bīchār yahai ṭhahirāyo | pār chīr kai likhat bahāyo |10|269|
Some wrote it out and floated it away; the very matter was told to the sangat. Weighing it, they settled on this: they tore the writ across and floated it off downstream.
Whatever the whole sangat said, that deed they did; ‘Let the writing be floated away’ — such was the discernment they gave.
The Bazaar Shut Against the Khalsa
chalī bāt pañchan mai āī | likhat sakal un diyo bahāī | tab un hī bichār yah kīnā | sabh bājār band kar dīnā |12|271|
The matter came round to the elders: the Sikhs had floated the whole writ away. Then the elders resolved on this — and had the entire bazaar shut down.
bir gāde kar likhat karāde | ketan kirat binā dukh pāe | ketan jāi jāi likh dīnā | jo un kahayo soī un kīnā |13|272|
Firmly they had a fresh writ drawn; some, cut off from their livelihood, suffered. Some went, one after another, and signed; whatever those men said, they did.
ketan ās ek par dharī | ketan uch nīch chit karī | ketan dar darasan ko dhāe | ketan grih hākam ke āe |14|273|
Some set their hope on the One alone; some let high and low fill their hearts; some ran to the door for darshan; some came to the ruler's house.
ketak darasan ko gae, ketak bhae udās | ketak hākam ke gae, nah rākhayo bisavās |15|274|
Some went for darshan; some grew heartsick; some went to the ruler — and kept no faith.
ketak sikkhan yah mat dhārā | hākam āge karī pukārā | pañchan nagar band sabh kīnā | in ko hukam tumai kachh dīnā |16|275|
Some Sikhs took this resolve, and cried out their plea before the ruler: ‘The elders have shut the whole town down — give them some order of yours.’
The Khalsa Before the Ruler: the Masands Put Away
madh majīt rīt un dhārī | karan na pāvai ham biuhārī | tab hākam bichār yah kīnā | tin ke hukam sāth kar dīnā |17|276|
‘They have set a ban upon the market; we traders can do no business.’ Then the ruler pondered the matter, and sent his command along with them.
jāi majīt kaho re bhāī | in kī hāṭe dehu khulāī | līne hukam tahān chal āe | je siradār teī batalāe |18|277|
‘Go and tell the market-elders, brothers: open up these men's shops.’ Taking the order, they came along — the very headmen who had spoken so.
dekhat hī chavake sakala, hute pañch sabh soi | hāṭan khol na dehige, honī hoi su hoi |19|278|
The moment they saw it, they all started up — every elder there. ‘We will not let the shops be opened — come what may, let it come.’
mil pañchan im bāt banāī | sabh majīt band karavāī | mile apār nagar mai soī | kahit khālasā kih bidh hoī |20|279|
The elders met and shaped this word, and had the whole market shut. A boundless throng gathered in the town, saying, ‘What is to become of the Khalsa now?’
dekhahu ab kaise ban āvai | kaisī sobh khālasā pāvai | karīai ab in so bidh soī | kahai na pher khālasā koī |21|280|
‘See now how it turns out; what glory the Khalsa will get! Let us deal with them in such a way that no one calls himself Khalsa again.’
mil hākam ke bāt banāī | inai rāh ik naī chalāī | kulā karam ke mārag tajāge | kar hai chāl or im lāge |22|281|
They met the ruler and shaped their word: ‘These have started up a new road; they have forsaken the paths of clan and custom, and set themselves upon another way.’
vāhagurū kā khālasā, kahat sakal mil soi | pūchhe inai suchet kai, jo tumare man hoi |23|282|
‘The Khalsa of Waheguru!’ — so they all declared, gathered as one. ‘Ask them, then, mindfully, whatever is in your heart.’
pātasāh dilī pat soī | kahat khālasā tā ko hoī | tumai khālasā kiā mat dhārā | so bidh kahīai sañch bichārā |24|283|
The emperor, lord of Delhi, spoke — to those who called themselves the Khalsa: ‘What creed have you taken up, O Khalsa? Tell us that way, in truthful thought.’
tab sikhan yah bāt batāī | satigur purakh mahā sukhadāī | āge jin ke nāib hute | nānv masand sagal the jete |25|284|
Then the Sikhs told the matter: ‘The True Guru, the great Being, the giver of bliss — those who once were his deputies, masands they all were called —
so satigur kiyo dūr sabha, param jot nij dhār | sagal sikh bhae khālasā, suniyai sāch bichār |26|285|
the True Guru put them all away, and kept the supreme light in himself. Every Sikh became the Khalsa — hear this in truthful thought.’
One Side the Khalsa, One Side the World
tab bichār hākam sun rahā | mil sikhan aise kachh kahā | tab mil pañchan yah mat kīnā | kachh ik kharach tās ko dīnā |27|286|
Then the ruler heard the reasoning through; the Sikhs together had spoken so. Then the elders met and resolved: they gave him a sum of money for it.
‘Seize these men for us just once; take some offering from us for it.’ Then those men took the money in hand, and did just as they were told.
ketak sikh pakar baiṭhāe | ketak sunat mahā ḍar pāe | ūch nīch ketan so karī | aisī bāt prabal hui parī |29|288|
Some Sikhs they seized and held; some, hearing it, were sore afraid. High and low they dealt with many — such a mighty trouble it grew.
mil pañchan kīno matā, dhariyai saṅg apār | ek or bhayo khālasā, ek or sansār |30|289|
The elders met and made their resolve, ranged with a boundless host: on one side stood the Khalsa, on the other the whole world.
santan ke kāj kī su lāj taihī bharan kahī, or mere svāmī ber kon sī ju kahī hai | paṛīe baṭ paṛīe or nagar ke apār loga, khālase ke sikhon sāth nīch ūch bhaī hai | kahate hain kapaṭ bain sunat hī na parat chaina, kāmpat sarīr saran terī hī ju gahī hai | suniyai pukār karanahār nah bilamm dhāra, tere hī adhār bāt tujh tāī rahī hai |31|290|
‘You Yourself said You would keep the honour of Your saints' work — and O my Master, what hour is this that has come? On the roads and the river-ghats, and the countless folk of the town, with the Khalsa's Sikhs it has gone from high to low. They speak words of deceit; hearing them, no peace remains; the body trembles — Your refuge alone we have grasped. Hear the cry, O Creator, and make no delay — on You alone the whole matter now rests.’
The Lord Hears; the Markets Reopen
sun dayāl kripāl ho, bhayo su ān sahāi | hākam ke man mai basī, hāṭe daī khulāi |32|291|
The Merciful, the Compassionate, heard, and came to their aid; it settled in the ruler's mind, and he had the shops thrown open.
sabh majīt khol kar dīnī | tabī sulā āpas mai kīnī | hāṭe khulī bhayo rujagārā | bhayo anand krodh jab mārā |33|292|
He had the whole market opened; then and there a peace was made among them. The shops opened, livelihood returned; joy arose when the wrath was slain.
mil āpas mai bahu sukh kīnā | adhik het āge te chīnā | pher sikh saṅgat mai āe | ketan āi gunāh bakhasāe |34|293|
Meeting together they made much gladness, and knew far more love than before. Then the Sikhs came back into the sangat; some came and had their faults forgiven.
tab sikkhan un liyo milāī | pher chāl darasan kī āī | dar darasan ko sikkh sidhāe | bhae anand prabh gun gāe |35|294|
Then they took the Sikhs back into fellowship; once more the movement toward darshan came. The Sikhs set out for the door of darshan, and in bliss sang the Lord's praises.
tin ko liyo milāi, jinai likhat likh likh dae | satigur ke pratāpa, pher sikkh darasan gae |36|295|
Even those who had written writ upon writ against them were taken back into fellowship; by the True Guru's glory, the Sikhs again went for darshan.
e to darasan ko gae, karatā kare su hoi | kathā juddh saṅgrām kī, baranat ho ab soi |37|296|
These went for darshan — the Creator does as He wills. And now the tale of battle and of war I set forth.
