Anandpur, and the Sikhs Take Up Arms
gobind siṅgh anand pura, subh subās tih thān | parasat saṅgat daras jiha, pāvat nām nidhān |1|297|
Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur — a blessed, fragrant place. Touching his darshan, the sangat won the treasure of the Name.
ketak sikkh bidā bhae, ketak rahe hajūr | kiyo sāj saj juddh ko, bāje anahad tūr |2|298|
Some Sikhs took their leave; some stayed in his presence. He had them make ready for battle, and the unstruck war-trumpets rang.
vai jo sikkh vidā bhae, nagar nagar bisathār | tino jāi sansār mai, kautak kare apār |3|299|
Those Sikhs who took their leave spread out from town to town; going forth into the world, they worked boundless wonders.
nagar nagar mai judh kari, bhae khālasā soi | mān bachan sanamukh bhae, tih samān nahīn koi |4|300|
Standing firm town by town, they became the Khalsa; facing all with the word of honour, none was their equal.
yah līlā āge kahī, dillī ko bisathār | ihī bhānt sansār mai, kautak bhae apār |5|301|
This play was told before — how it reached as far as Delhi; in just this way, through the world, boundless wonders came to pass.
baranat kathā hajūr kī, karat juddh bīchār | dījai sidh su buddhivara, karanahār karatār |6|302|
Telling the tale of the Presence, taking up the reckoning of war — grant, O Creator, a clear and ready mind.
kachhuk sunī kachh ukat kari, baranat ho ab soi | karanahār karatā dhanī, jo kachh karai su hoi |7|303|
Some I have heard, some I set in my own verse; now I tell it forth. The Creator, the Doer, the Master — whatever He wills comes to pass.
Kahlur's Demand: Tribute or War
rājan so rach juddh birodh ko sāj kiyo ju yahai kaladhārī | tāte basī jih mai uh rāv ke, bāndh ke teg karī asavārī | bhej diyo likhakai uh ne, ab chhāḍo gurū jī ! bhūm hamārī | kai kachh dām dajā kar deva, kai juddh karo yah bāt bichārī |8|304|
The Kahlur raja set himself to war and strife — such was the working of the age. So in his fastness that chieftain bound on his sword and rode out, and sent a written word: ‘Now quit our land, O Guru! Either pay some tribute as your due, or make war’ — such was his thought.
sunat bāt satigur tabai, kop bhayo man māh | rāj tej doū bane, tih samān koū nāh |9|305|
Hearing the word, wrath then rose in the True Guru's mind. Both kingly and radiant he was — none anywhere his equal.
kop bhayo ju kahayo gurū gobind siṅgh su yā bidh dām na dījai | mūṛ ajānan so hit kaun hai, sidh yahai ab yuddhah kījai | māṅgat dān sujān yahai, ab neje kī nok anī saṅg lījai | aise hū jān karī abhimāna, tū mārag mai par nīr na pījai |10|306|
The anger rose, and Guru Gobind Singh spoke: ‘In this manner no tribute shall be given. What friendship is there with the foolish and unknowing? Better now to make war. This clever one asks a gift — then let him take the point and edge of the spear! Even so, knowing your pride: do not, on the road, stoop to drink another's water.’
rājā āv hajūr tū, jo chāhe so lei | kai kachh juddh biruddh kari, kar so ek na dei |11|307|
‘Come to me, O Raja, and take whatever you wish; or else make war and strife — but from my hand I give not a single thing.’
rāv kahilūrah bhāv likhā hajūr ko | e rājā ! tūn āv moh hajūr ko | tū udhe te āva, yahai bidh dījiyai | jī, bīch gher kai lehu judh im kījiyai |12|308|
To the Kahlur chief the Guru wrote his mind: ‘O Raja, come you to my presence. Come out from there — this is the way of it. Yes — encircle me, then, and make your war just so.’
tabai rāv haṇḍūr ko, gayo tās ke pās | jo kachh kaho su kījiyai, karī yahai aradās |13|309|
Then the chief went to the Raja of Handur, to his side, and made this plea to him: ‘Whatever you bid, that we shall do.’
The Raja Marches on Anandpur
tabai chhāḍ kahilūr pura, kīnī asavārī | muhare dhare nisāna, chalai pakharait sigārī | bhayo rāv asavāra, bāndh kar teg kamar dhar | laī su barachhī hātha, nābh āge jamadhar dhar | ḍālī su ḍhāl laṭakāikai, tarakas kamān saṅg hī liyo | laṛan chalayo prabh purakh so, baḍhau rāv tero hiyo |14|310|
Then, quitting the city of Kahlur, the raja mounted; banners set before, the mail-clad horsemen rode adorned. The chief mounted, his sword bound at his waist; spear in hand, dagger at the belt; shield slung swinging, quiver and bow taken along — he set out to fight the Lord, the eternal Being. Swell up your heart, O Raja — for you go against Him.
tabai rāv kahilūr ko, chaṛayo sakal dal sāj | laṛan chalo prabh purakh so, kīno nipaṭ akāj |15|311|
Then the Kahlur chief marched, his whole host arrayed; he set out to fight the Lord, the Being — an errand utterly in vain.
bhayo rāv asavāra, phauj mai bhayo nagārā | khelan chaṛayo sikāra, saṅg liyo log apārā | bahu bidh phauj banāi, saṅg rājā sabh līne | ānand pur kai nikaṭi, jāi ḍerā tah dīne | aise bichār rājā kiyo, bidā phej sabh kar daī | gherayo su nagar chahu or te, manah rasat sabh kar laī |16|312|
The chief mounted, drums beat through the host; he rode out as though to the hunt, and took a boundless multitude with him. Forming his force in many ways, taking all the rajas along, he came near Anandpur and pitched his camp there. Thus the raja resolved, and sent all his army forth; he ringed the town on every side — in his mind he had already seized it whole.
gobind siṅgh tāhī samai, līno sikkh bulāi | diyo khaṛag kar tās ke, dūtan deū sajāi |17|313|
Guru Gobind Singh at that hour called a Sikh, and put the sword in his hand, to chastise the foe.
Ajit Singh Rides Out
tab hī bachan pāi, chaṛio nagārā bajāi, sūr bhayo jīt siṅgh juddh ke karan ko | sikkhan ko sāth liyo, muhare nisān diyo, bāndhayo hai khaṛag sīs dūt ke dharan ko | bāndhī jamadhār or tarakas kamān saṅgi, līnī kar barachhī bal vairī ke haran ko | bāven kar ḍhāl laī ghore asavār bhayo, gobind siṅgh saṅg jāt rāv so laran ko |18|314|
Then, receiving the word, he rode out with the drum beating — the brave Ajit Singh, to make war. He took the Sikhs with him, banner set before, and bound on his sword to bring down the enemy's head. He belted on the dagger, and the quiver and bow; he took the spear in hand to break the foe's strength. Shield in his left hand, he mounted his horse — with Guru Gobind Singh he rode to fight the chief.
jahā rāv ḍerā diyo, tahā nagārā dīn | sunat sravan pun tās ko, bahur soch man kīn |19|315|
Where the chief had pitched his camp, there the drum was sounded; hearing it with his ears, he fell to brooding once more in his mind.
pūchh kai pradhān so bichār kiyo rājā taba, kaho bāt jīvahu kī, kaise juddh kījiyai ? karo ratavāh jāi, laṛo sanamukh dhāi, aise hai bichār kai su sulah kar lījiyai ? tab hī risāi kai sunāi kahayo mantrī ne, kaun dāb kaun gāḍh e salāh dījiyai | kījai ab hukam mohi, man mai na āno koi, āe ho jo dhāi jāi juddh kajon na kījiyai |20|316|
Then the raja took counsel, asking his chief: ‘Tell me — what of our lives; how shall we make this war? Shall we go and give battle, and charge and fight face to face — is that the way, or shall we make peace instead?’ Then, kindling with anger, the minister spoke out: ‘Why this talk of pressing or of holding back? Give me the order now; let no fear enter your heart. They have come charging on — why, then, not make war?’
mant diyo tab rāi ko, karaū bīr saṅgrām | laran bhiran sāke karana, e rājan ke kām |21|317|
Then he gave the raja his counsel: ‘Make war, O warrior; to fight and clash and win a martyr's fame — these are a king's own work.’
rāv ko pūchh pradhān chaṛayo, na ṭarayo ahivān karī duchitāī | saṅg sipāh sumār nahīn kachhu, vār na pār ganī nah jāī | ek su ek balī ju chale, tab sauh hī ān daī dikhalāī | morache bāndh kai ṭhāḍhe bhae, bhaī sūran ke man mai ju badhāī |22|318|
The chief, having asked the raja, mounted, and turned not back, nor wavered at the challenge. The soldiers with him past all counting — no near, no far could be reckoned. Each mightier than the last set forth, then came and stood to face them; they formed their battle-lines and stood — and joy rose in the warriors' hearts.
The Battle Joined
ek ṭhānv jab jugganī, bhaī ikaṭṭhī ān | bājat rāgan rāg sabha, karat sūr saṅgrām |23|319|
When the two hosts came and gathered in one place, all the ragas and raginis playing, the warriors made their war.
bājat bher karanāi saranāi, nagāre kī choṭ sunāi daī hai | bājat rāg chhaho ar tīsa, gaī sudh kāir ko na rahī hai | jhūmat sūr sune pun mār kī, mār hī mār bichār laī hai | dono anī gaḍ baḍḍh bhaī taha, tīr tuphaṅg kī mār bhaī hai |24|320|
The bheri, the karnai and the sarnai played; the nagara sounded its stroke. All thirty-six musical modes rang out, and the coward's wits were gone. The warriors swayed, and hearing the war-strain resolved on ‘strike, and strike again!’ Both battle-lines closed and clashed there, and the volley of arrows and guns broke forth.
pritham mār bandūk kī, pāchhe tīr kamān | phir pāchhe samaser lai, karat sūr saṅgrām |25|321|
First the volley of guns, then arrows from the bow; then, sword in hand at the last, the warriors made their war.
larat ek so eka, ek so ek nihārai | karat sūr saṅgrāma, kahā kab kāb bīchārai | divatan dharayo dhiāna, hot kahun juddh saras at | ve chaṛ chale bibāna, āi rījhat dekh gat | jogan su ān ūpar kharī, āj paṛū kehu bhare | jodhā su jītayo judh mai, prabal khālasāī larai |26|322|
One fights with one; one gazes upon another; making war, the warriors — how shall the poet's verse tell it? The demigods fixed their gaze: ‘somewhere a most glorious battle is joined.’ They rode down in their celestial cars, and came, enraptured, to watch the sight. The yoginis stood over the field: ‘whose skull shall we fill today?’ The warriors won in the fray — the mighty Khalsa fights.
satigur ke pratāp te, larat khālasā soi | sūrā sabh tihu lok mai, tih samān nahīn koi |27|323|
By the True Guru's glory the Khalsa fights; among all the warriors of the three worlds, none is its equal.
vāhagurū manāi jīi dhār kop pare dhāi, karai log hāi hāi aisī bidh kar hī | māre samaseran ke lothan pai loth ḍārī, tīran ke māre kahun dhīraj na dhar hī | māre ju bandūkan ke dīne asavār ḍāra, nejan ke māre nar dharanī par par hī | māre jamadhāran ke jīvan ke nāh mūla, bāndhe hathiār pāñchā khālasā jī lar hī |28|324|
Calling on Waheguru, holding Him in the heart, in wrath they fell on charging, and the foe cried ‘Alas, alas!’ — such was the manner of it. Struck by the swords, corpse was flung upon corpse; struck by the arrows, nowhere could a man hold his ground. Struck by the guns, riders were hurled down; struck by the spears, men fell and fell to the earth. Struck by the daggers, of their lives no root was left — bearing all five weapons, the Khalsa fights.
chalat tīr bandūk taha, nejā saras apār | bagat bahut taravār yahi, chamakat hai jamadhār |29|325|
There arrows and guns flew, and boundless glittering spears; there the swords swung thick, and the daggers flashed.
tabai gahī taravāra, phauj mai parat dhāi kar | karat ek so doi, doi hoi parat dharat par | chalat rakat darīāu, girat jujhant sūr tah | divas rain hoi gaī, khayon hui rahī mand yah | mahān juddh bhārī bhayo, khabar tīn lokan bhaī | gobind siṅgh sut iv larata, rājan kī sudh budh gaī |30|326|
Then he seized his sword and fell charging into the host; making one into two, both fell upon the earth. A river of blood ran; the fighting warriors fell there. Day turned into night; the slaughter grew dim with dust. A mighty, heavy battle was joined; word of it reached the three worlds. Fighting so, like a son of Guru Gobind Singh, the rajas lost their wits.
rājan kī sudh budh gaī, bhayo juddh jab jor | larat siṅgh raṇajīt tahi, phauj daī sabh mor |31|327|
The rajas lost their wits when the battle raged strong; there Ajit Singh fought, and turned the whole army back.
The Enemy Routed
ek lare ik bhāj lukāne | ik kāir dekh bahut ḍarapāne | ik ghāil hui gae bihāl | ik udhare sīs phirai bikarāl |32|328|
One fights, one flees and hides; one coward, seeing it, is filled with dread. One, wounded, falls faint; one, headless, still whirls about, a terrible sight.
One faces the battle and rages in the fray; one flees and comes not near again. One dies of thirst, without water; one, seeing the sword, can hold no courage.
adhik adhīr sasat taj ḍāre | gir gir pare pakharīā sāre | ek sūr hoi sanamukh laraī | ve marane te bilam na karaī |34|330|
Sore-shaken, many cast down their weapons; the mailed horsemen fell and fell. One, a true warrior, fights face to face — and does not delay to die.
larat sūr saṅgrām mai, mahā niḍar man soi | tā samān tihu lok mai, biralā ganīai koi |35|331|
Fighting in the warriors' war, most fearless of heart — his like in the three worlds is a rare one, hardly to be counted.
gājat sūr mahā ran mai, ghan mai chamakai bijalī ghananāvai | bhāran mai jim chand divai, na chhapai raṇajīt mahā ran pāvai | bhān prakās kiyo ju tabai, nis bhājat hai tih neṛ na āvai | māno prakām kiyo ju tabai so bāj su, yo dal rājan ke bichalāvai |36|332|
The warriors roar in the great fray, as lightning flashes and thunders in the clouds. As the moon shows among the stars, so Ajit Singh, unhidden, wins the great battle. When the sun shines forth, the night flees and comes not near — so the young Sahibzada scattered the rajas' host.
A Truce, and the Guru Leaves for Nirmoh
ketan din ih bhānt kari, bhayo judh saṅgrām | prabal bhayo tah khālasā, rājan mānī ān |37|333|
For some days in this manner the war and battle went on; there the Khalsa grew mighty, and the rajas owned defeat.
tab upāv rāje im kīnā | mantrī son bichār kar līnā | ihī bhānt dāv kar āvai | aur kachh nahīn hot upāvai |38|334|
Then the raja devised a plan, and took counsel with his minister: ‘Let the stratagem come about just so; no other device will serve.’
ek ān satigur ko dījai | tabai ṭhānv apanī kar lījai | gaū bāndh rāv tah gayo | chhāḍo gānv bhānt yah kahayo |39|335|
‘Let us give the Satguru some one thing, and so take back our own place.’ The raja bound an oath upon the cow and came, and spoke in this wise: ‘Leave the town.’
sravan sunat gobind siṅgh dāte | chhāḍī ṭhaur karī yah bāte | pur niramoh kīno bisrāmā | bhejī phauj hanan ko grāmā |40|336|
Hearing it, the bountiful Guru Gobind Singh left the place, honouring this word; he took his rest at the town of Nirmoh — and the raja sent a force to fall upon the village.
