Nirmoh: the Host Falls on the Village
gobind siṅgh niramoh mai, ān kiyo bisrām | chalī phauj kahilūr ko, lūṭ lehu sabh grām |1|337|
Guru Gobind Singh took his rest at Nirmoh; and the Kahlur force came on — ‘Plunder every village!’
gobind siṅgh kī phauj chaḍhī, ar gher liyo sabh gānv gujārā | dekh nihār mahā bisamāra, pahāriyai kete hī māre apārā | lothan pai tah loth parī, ar jogan ān ke paṛū pasārā | jujhat sāhib chand tahān, yah jor parī ran māh pukārā |2|338|
Gobind Singh's force marched out; the foe had ringed the whole village round. To see it was a marvel past telling — many past counting were slain on the hillside. Corpse fell upon corpse there, and the yoginis came and spread their skulls wide. Bhai Sahib Chand fought there; a mighty press bore in, and the war-cry rang across the field.
liyo paṛū jogan arī, gidh bahut maṇḍalāt | larat sūr saṅgrām mahi, mahā niḍar hui jāt |3|339|
The yogini took up her skull; the vultures wheel thick above. Fighting in the warriors' war, they grow utterly fearless.
mār hī mār pukārat hain tahān, jujhat sūr mahā raṅg rāte | jodhan so tahān jodh are, na ṭare na ḍhare su khare hī larāte | jujhat sūr gire dhar pai, su pare ran mai ju mahā hī suhāte | kādir ek bhaje mukh mor kai, chhoḍ chale ran hī ḍarapāte |4|340|
‘Strike, and strike again!’ they cry there; the warriors fight, dyed in the deepest hue of valour. Warrior stands to warrior — none turns, none bends, but stands firm and fights. Fighting warriors fall to the earth, and lie in the field most fair in their sacrifice; only the cowards, turning their faces, fled and left the field in fear.
larat jor saṅgrām mai, ṭārayo nāh ṭarant | ek mār dui dui karata, dui dui dharat parant |5|341|
Fighting hard in the battle, driven at, they yet turn not; striking one, they make two of him, and two by two men fall to the earth.
Bhai Sahib Chand's Martyrdom
jor larai tah khālasā āḍhe hū, madat sāhib chandā kī jāī | ek so ek mahābalī sūra, larai ran mai ju karai hath āī | mār laī tahān phauj kitī ju, rahī su atī ju daī bichalāvī | jīt bhaī tahān khālase kī, ar sāhib chand kī loth uṭhāī |6|342|
The Khalsa fought hard there, staunch, with the aid of Sahib Chand; warrior upon mighty warrior fought hand to hand in the field. Much of the enemy force they slew; what remained, they scattered. The Khalsa won the victory there — and Sahib Chand's body was lifted up, for he had fallen.
loth liyo niramoh mai, ān diyo tih dāg | prān diyo hui khālasā, pūran tāke bhāg |7|343|
His body was borne to Nirmoh and given to the flames; he gave up his life a Khalsa — his destiny made whole.
The Rajas Turn to the Mughal Emperor
kete hī gānv apār nihār kai, mār lae jabai khālasā dhāyo | rājan soch kiyo man mai aba, jor hī khālase dhūm uṭhāyo | gānvan ke nar bhāj gae su, basai ban mai na rahai ṭhaharāyo | aise upāv koī kariyai, yah ṭhaur rahai, nahīn lot chhināyo |8|344|
Seeing the many villages that had aided the foe, the Khalsa charged and struck them. Then the rajas took thought: the Khalsa had raised a mighty stir by sheer strength. The village men had fled and gone, dwelling in the forests, and would not stay. ‘Let some device be found, that our own place may hold and not be snatched away.’
tabai rāv kahilūr ke, kīno ek upāu | bidā kiyo pradhān ko, abai turak pai jāu |9|345|
Then the Kahlur chief found a device: he sent off his envoy — ‘Go now to the Turk.’
jāi kahī sulatān hī son, ham so in joran jor karī hai | mār liyo tih gānv sabai, ju abai kahilūr pai choṭ dharī hai | jānī na jāt karaige kahān su, yahai bidh jān kai sisaṭ ḍarī hai | kījai abai uparālo hamārā su, kajo na karo tumahu ju dharī hai |10|346|
He went and told the Sultan: ‘These have made a mighty coalition against us; they have destroyed all our villages, and now struck a blow at Kahlur. None knows what they will do next — knowing it so, the whole world is afraid. Grant us your help now; why not do what you have already resolved?’
ān turak ke kar dadī, rājā kī aradās | turak kahayo ik or so, jāhu tās ke pās |11|347|
The envoy came and laid the raja's plea before the Turk; the Turk said, pointing aside: ‘Go to that one there.’
tau sulatān kahayo ik or so jāhu abai ih kai saṅg bhāī | sīrand vāle ko saṅg liyo, mil kai sabh jāhu karo ju chaḍhāī | jau mil hai tu milāvahu āna, ju nāh milai tu karo hath āī | aise bichār kai phauje daī, milakai ju sabai sirahand mai āī |12|348|
Then the Sultan said: ‘Go now with him, brother; take the lord of Sirhind along, and all together make the assault. If he submits, then bring him to terms; if he will not, then take him by force.’ So resolving, he gave them troops; and all gathered and came to Sirhind.
The Sangat Comes; the Guru Arms Them
sīrand mai siradār ika, rahit turak ko soi | saṅg phauj ketī daī, chaṛayo niḍar man hoi |13|349|
In Sirhind was a commander, of the Turk's own faith; a force was given him, and he marched, fearless of heart.
e kautak tah maṇḍ rahe, karat tās bīchār | nagar nagar kī saṅgaten, ā pahuñchī darabār |14|350|
These matters unfolded there as they took their counsel; and meanwhile the sangats of city upon city arrived at the Presence.
rākhe tabai hajūr prabhu, kar chākar darabār | mujare līne tinan ke, pahirāe hathiār |15|351|
The Lord kept them all before him, and made them servants of his court; he received their salutations, and invested them with arms.
mahā kātakī jān ki darasan ko ae | niramal bhae sarīr ki darasan jaba-bhae | rākhe sabai hajūr ki prabh pūran dhanī | jī, jo vahu karai su hoi, karī tā kī banī |16|352|
In the great month of Katak they came for darshan; their bodies were made pure the moment they had darshan. He kept them all before him — the perfect Lord, the Master; whatever He wills comes to pass, and He made it so.
rachanā sabh darabār kī, jo vahu karai su hoi | rahai ju sikkh hajūr mai, tih samān nahīn koi |17|353|
All the fashioning is His court's; whatever He does, that comes to be; the Sikh who stays in his Presence — none is his equal.
prabh pūran sāmā karī, rachahu judh mahamant | so samarath kāran karana, bhumat mūṛ bahu jant |18|354|
The perfect Lord made all ready to wage the mighty war — He, the all-powerful Cause of causes — while many a foolish creature wanders lost.
Besieged on Every Side
liyo saṅg samānan or paṭhānana, kop chaṛayo sirahand ko sūbā | tiu ut te kahilūr ko rāva, chaṛayo liyo saṅg mahā dal dūjā | aise hī gujar or gavāra, āe ju kite tih vār na pāre | yo umaḍe chahu or aṭā, māno gherat bhān ko ān ghaṭā re |19|355|
Taking his peers and the Pathans, the subah of Sirhind marched in wrath; and from the other side the Kahlur chief marched too, with a second great host. So too the Gujjars and rustics came, past all reckoning — no near, no far; they surged from every side, so many, as though a storm-cloud had come to swallow the sun.
chahu or gherā parayo, jiu tāran mai chand | tih samān chhab tab dharī, prabh ko param anand |20|356|
The siege closed on all four sides — as the moon amid the stars; such was the splendour the Lord then wore, in supreme bliss.
jaisā nagīnā aṅgūṭhī mai hot su, hot hai chand ju tāriyan māhī | jo ghan mai bijarī chamakai, damakai tahān khālasā phaujan māhī | siṅgh ikai ar lacchh paṭhū sabha, bhājat dekhat hī ban māhī | aise mano tahā khālasā siṅgh hai, or nahīn samatā jag māhī |21|357|
As a gem is set in a ring, as the moon among the stars, as lightning flashes in the clouds — so the Khalsa shone amid the armies. One Singh, and the foes a hundred thousand — yet they flee at the mere sight of him, into the forest. Such is the Khalsa Singh there — none in the world its equal.
lage morache turak ke, ūpar chaṛī kamān | it sanamukh bhayo khālasā, hot bīr saṅgrām |22|358|
The Turk's trenches were set, and the bows were drawn; here the Khalsa faced them, and the warriors' battle began.
top chhuṭai garajai ghan mai, larajai hiyarā su marajai bhaj māhī | aise manoj chalai bhav chāla, halai basudhā sam tās kī āhī | dāman jiu chamakai tih ṭhaur su, lāgat jām gahī su tahā hī | set mano barakhai ghan te tahā, golā chalai samatās asāhī |23|359|
The cannon fired, thundering as in the clouds; hearts trembled, and the fleeing died. So the war swept on like the storm's own march, and the earth shook with the shock of it; lightning flashed at that place, and struck home wherever it fell. As white hail pours from the clouds, so the cannonballs flew, past all reckoning.
jih jan ke golā lagai, rahit jīv soī ṭhaur | man kī man hī mai rahita, kahit bachan nahīn aur |24|360|
The man the ball strikes stays fixed upon that spot; his mind stays in his mind alone — he can speak no other word.
ghan umaḍayo chahu or te, mahā prabal bisathār | tiu dal satran ko ayo, nāh na parat sumār |25|361|
The clouds surged from all four sides, a mighty, boundless spread; so the enemy host came on, past all reckoning.
The Battle Like Krishna's Holi
sajām ghaṭā umaṇḍe chahu or te, yo umaṇḍe dal dūt ke āī | dāman jo damakai taravāra, liyo karavār phirāvat tāhī | sūr kī suābī te dhār parai, ghan mai mano tās kamān kī najāhī | chhuṭat tīr mano ran madh ju sāvan kī barakhā barakhāhī |26|362|
Dark clouds surged from every side — so surged the enemy host in its coming. As lightning flashes, so the sword; the warrior wheels his blade about. From the warrior's mettle it falls, as though a bow-string loosed within the cloud; the arrows fly in the field as the rains of Sawan pour down.
chalat tīr gambhīr jah arajan tīr samān | jih ur lāgat jāt bidhi, chhaṭak jāt tih prān |27|363|
Grave arrows fly there, like the arrows of Arjun; whosesoever breast they pierce, that man's life escapes away.
ghāil ghumat hai ran mai, ju larai kar jor kiyo ghanasārā | jhumat sūr gire dhar pai, ju parayo ran jor mahā bikarārā | srono chalayo tin ke tan te, ju dharī chhab yon kar loth kinārā | jayon ghan te barakhā barakhai, ju chalayo pravāh rakat ko dhārā |28|364|
The wounded reel about the field; they who fight make of it a dense press. Reeling, the warriors fall to the earth, and a mighty, dreadful fight has fallen. Blood runs from their bodies — such the sight it wears, that corpses line the field's edge. As rain pours from the cloud, so runs the flowing stream of blood.
sakal samāj bisāra, jujh sūr ran mai parat | chalat rakat paravāha, ik ghāil ran mai phirat |29|365|
Forgetting all the world, the fighting warriors fall in the field; the stream of blood flows on, and one wounded man still wanders it.
khelat sūr mahā ran mai, ban mai mano sajām jī phāg machāyo | daurat sūr liyo kar mai pichakāran so ju bandūk chalāyo | sronat dhār chalī tin ke, tan te manahu lāl gulāl lagāyo | bāge bane tin ke tan lāla, mano raṅgarej raṅgai raṅg lajāyo |30|366|
The warriors play in the great battle as though Lord Krishna had raised a Holi in the forest. They run, gun in hand, and fired it like a Holi's spray; blood streamed from their bodies as though bright crimson gulal were flung. Their garments turned red upon them, as though they put the very dyer's dye to shame.
tan jhārī kar sūramā, sron raṅg bhar līn | chhirak chhirak phir phir larata, phāgan kī rut kīn |31|367|
The warrior, drenching his whole body, is filled with the hue of blood; sprinkling and sprinkling, he fights on and on — he has made a Phalgun springtime of it.
jodhan juddh rachayo ran mai, ban mai mano sajām jī rās machāe | bāje baje ran mai ju veī, ar nāchat gidh saroj sunāe | jhumat sūr mahā ran mai, māno dekhat rās unīde se āe | lāl nihālī kī sej kiyo, dhar sovat sūr palaṅg bichhāe |32|368|
The warriors made their war in the field as though Lord Krishna were dancing the Ras in the forest. The instruments sound; the vultures dance, and cry out their strain. The warriors reel in the great battle, as though drowsy watchers had come to see the Ras. They made a crimson-quilted couch, and the warriors lie sleeping, their beds spread out upon the earth.
basudhā sam kīno palaṅga, rakat nihālī ḍhār | mahā unīde hain ke, sovat pāi pasār |33|369|
The earth they made their couch, its quilt of poured-out blood; deep in the sleep of death, they lie with their limbs outstretched.
khelat sūr mahān mahamatta, mahān balavant mahān ran pāyo | sron samūh pravāh chalayo, tah jogan paṛū su pūr bharāyo | ek so ek mahāmbalī sūra, gire dhar pai su yahai chhamb chhāyo | paun pravāh chalai ju tahān, dhar te ju ukhār kai rukh girāyo |34|370|
The warriors play, deep-drunk with valour, most mighty, in the great battle joined. A whole stream of blood flowed; there the yoginis filled their skulls to the brim. Warrior upon mighty warrior fell to the earth — this the sight that overspread it. A rushing wind blew there, as though it uprooted trees from the ground and cast them down.
The Guru Crosses the River, and Withdraws to Bisali
mahā prabal ran tah parayo, sah na sakat bhua bhār | paṛū pūr jogan chalati, sronat kī tahān ḍhār |35|371|
A most mighty battle fell there; the earth could not bear the weight of it. The yoginis go, filling their skulls, pouring out the blood there.
sāt pahar lau ran parayo, mahān prabal ik sār | haṭī phauj turakān kī, satigur kiyo bichār |36|372|
Seven watches long the battle raged, most mighty, all as one; the Turks' force fell back, and the True Guru took thought.
chhoḍ diyo tab thān niramoh ko, pār bhae jab sāir tīrā | ek so ek mahān balī sūra, parī chal chāl rahayo nahīn dhīrā | kop chale ju paṭhān veī phiri, juddh machayo dariāu ke nīrā | jujjhat sūr mahā mahamatta, na chint bhae taj deh sarīrā |37|373|
He then left the place of Nirmoh, when they had crossed to the river's far shore. Warrior upon mighty warrior — the march swept on, no calm remained. The Pathans came on again in wrath, and the battle raged at the river's water; the warriors fight, deep-drunk with courage, and careless give up their bodies.
savā pahir lau ran parayo, mahā prabal ik sār | bahut sūr jujjhe tahān, tab yah kiyo bichār |38|374|
A watch and a quarter the battle raged, most mighty, all as one; many warriors fought there — then the Guru took this thought:
prabh se purakh kī saran gahu re manā, ān osar banā dāv tere | khel kīno dhanī, bharam bhulī ghanī, nāh rākhit mān kireg kere | jīv ar jant bharamāi dīne sakala, sabhai sansār nindā su herai | kiyo sabh jān pramān etā kaho, rākhijai saran prabh jīv tere |39|375|
‘Take the refuge of the Lord-Being, O mind — another chance is now your move. The Master has made this play; delusion has led the many astray; He keeps not the pride of anyone. All creatures He has set wandering in delusion, and the whole world looks on with its blame. Knowing all this for truth, I say only this: keep me in your refuge, O Lord — I am your creature.’
rākh liyo prabh jī tabai, aise kiyo bichār | diyo pher dal turak ke, mahā prabal bal dhār |40|376|
The Lord then protected them, resolving thus; once more He drove back the Turks' army, wielding a mighty strength.
gobind siṅgh mahā bal dhāra, bidār dae dal turakan kere | aisī bhaī prabh kī rachanā, sabh bhāj gae phir āe na nere | rāv bisālī ko ān milayo, kar jor kahayo, ham sevak tere | kīnī majā tih ṭhaur prabhu, su kiyo tih thānv tihī pur ḍere |41|377|
Guru Gobind Singh, wielding great might, shattered the army of the Turks. Such was the Lord's making that all fled, and came not near again. Raja Bisali came and met him, and with joined hands said: ‘We are your servants.’ The Lord took his ease at that place, and pitched his camp there, in that town.
