Chapter 10

Chapter 10 · The Battles of Bisali and Kalmot

The war follows the Guru to Bisali; a hunt turns into the storming of Kalmot fort, whose people attack again through the night. At dawn the Khalsa charges like a hawk on sparrows — the Kahlur raja submits, and the Guru returns to rebuild Anandgarh.

The Battle Renewed at Bisali

sarab khālase ṭhaur tiha, utar kiyo bisrām | bahut phauj kahilūr kī, bhaī muhabalā ān |1|378|

The whole Khalsa took its rest at that place; and a great Kahlur force came on, and a confrontation arose.

pher machayo at juddh tahān, su jahān kar mai gah vār phirāe | ek so ek mahān mahimata, bhire balavant su yo gaj gāe | chhūṭat hai charakhī ju tahān, su tuphaṅg chalain gad nejā banāe | sāh soṇṭī gur gobind siṅgh hai, baiṭh jharokhe gaind laṛāe |2|379|

Once more a fierce battle raged there, where they gripped and wheeled their blades in hand. Mighty warrior clashed with mighty warrior, roaring like elephants. The wheeling-gun discharges; the muskets fire; the spears are thrust — and the king-like Guru Gobind Singh, seated at his balcony, sets them to war as one sets elephants to fight.

daur daur jodhā arata, mānahu larat gaind | jalat chāl dharanī halata, bajat sār kilakant |3|380|

Warriors run and clash, as though war-elephants at grips; with a burning charge the earth shakes, and the steel rings and shrieks.

bājat sār so sār tahān, chamakai chinagī sam tāran jaisī | aisī banī rut sāvan kī, paṭabījan jot anūp rataisī | iu upajai jhanakār tahā, māno sail pai bājat hai chamakaisī | māno mahā ghan mai chamakai damakai taravār mahān bijalaisī |4|381|

Steel clangs on steel there; sparks flash like stars. Such was it as the season of Sawan, its lightning of matchless beauty; the clangour rose as though the flash struck home upon a mountain — as though in a great cloud the sword flashed and gleamed like a mighty bolt.

chhuṭat mahā bandūk taha, chalat tīr kilakant | māno rav kī jot mai, prabal meh barakhant |5|382|

The great muskets fire there, and the arrows fly shrieking; as though within the sun's own light a mighty rain poured down.

The Kahlur Host Routed

chār hī oran te umaḍayo ju, larai tah khālase aise kiyo hai | dāsan jo kar mai gah vāra, sabhai dal mār bidār diyo hai | mār dharī ar tīran kī ju, kiyo chalinī jim dhaur ṭarayo hai | bhāj gae kahilūr ke pura, karūr bhae ju garūr kiyo hai |6|383|

From all four sides they surged; and there the Khalsa fought in such wise. The servants, gripping their blades in hand, struck and shattered the whole host. The enemy's arrows too they beat down, and swept them off like chaff through a sieve. They fled to the city of Kahlur — those cruel ones who had shown their pride.

bhājī phauj kahilūr kī, hui kar sakal adhīr | māno gun te chhuṭak kai, bhajayo jāt hai tīr |7|384|

The Kahlur force fled, all unnerved of heart; as an arrow, loosed from the string, speeds away — so they fled.

jo jo nar garabat bhae, dīne bharam bhulāi | jo jan simarat prīt kari, ui līne lachh lāi |8|385|

Whatever men grew proud were cast into delusion; but the devotees who remembered Him with love, He took and drew to His mark.

You Are the Light in Sun and Moon

kiyo hai prakās jot chamakat hai chahu ora, dīsai rav chand hū mai terī sabh jot hai | jete hai e jīv jant karanahār tuhī eka, pūr rahayo sarab hī mai āp otapot hai | sevā jākī hai anūp sundar sarūp rūpa, charan kaval nirakhe te jan kī gat hot hai | binasai hai sabhai pāp nis din prabh ek jāpa, chahu or āp āpa, āp hī disot hai |9|386|

You have made the light, and the radiance shines on all four sides; in sun and moon alike, all is Your own light. However many these creatures are, You alone are their Maker; You fill them all, woven through like warp and weft. Whose service is of matchless, lovely form — beholding the lotus-feet, the devotee is set free. All sin is destroyed by chanting the One Lord, night and day; on all four sides, Yourself and Yourself alone — it is You alone that appear.

aiso samarath nām hai, tā sam avar na koi | jīvan mai bharapūr hai, jit dekho tit soi |10|387|

Such is the mighty Name; none other is its equal; it fills all living things — wherever you look, there it is.

The Hunt That Became the Siege of Kalmot

ṭhānv bisālī mai kiyo ketak din bisrām | khelan chaṛe sikār ko, pher kiyo sarañjām |11|388|

At the place of Bisali he took his rest some days; then he rode out to the hunt, and made all ready once more.

nāv ko sikār kahā kudarat ke karanahāra, juddh ko bhae savār naubat bajāi kai | ve jo kalamoṭ mo garū log rahite the, gherā bā sikkho ko tab mārag mai āi kai | rahe the pichhārī mai kete hī sikh tahān, juddh bhayo tin hī so liyo doi dhāi kai | kahā bā hajūr jāi sikkho ne khāvand jū so, gherī kalamoṭ dhāi sāhib ne jāi kai |12|389|

What is the hunt to the Maker of all nature? — mounted for war, with the drums beating. Those proud folk who dwelt at Kalmot came then upon the road and waylaid the Sikhs. Some Sikhs were behind in the rear; a fight broke out with them, and two charged in. The Sikhs went and told the Master; and the Sahib rode and laid siege to Kalmot.

tabai khālase āi kai, gher laī kalamoṭ | dūhū or te prabal hī bhaī bandūkan choṭ |13|390|

Then the Khalsa came and ringed Kalmot round; from both sides fierce and heavy fell the musket-fire.

jo umaḍayo dal gobind siṅgh ko, vār na pār sumār na pāyo | gher liyo kalamoṭ ko koṭa, bhaī jab choṭ tuphaṅgā chalāyo | mār karī tin ko at hī, ju karūr bhayo prabh ko bisarāyo | sāṅg kahīn siravār kahīn, karavār kahī ju bhae bikalāyo |14|391|

Gobind Singh's surging force, past all reckoning, ringed the fort of Kalmot; and when the volley came, the muskets fired. They slew them utterly — those cruel ones who had forgotten the Lord. Spears here, headless bodies there, swords there — they were thrown into confusion.

bajākul hui grih te bhajayo, sabh tan bhayo adhīr | sudh na bhaī kachh juddh kī, tharahar karat sarīr |15|392|

In panic the chief fled his house, his whole body unnerved; he knew nothing of the battle, his body all a-tremble.

taū nisān guradev ke chaḍhe koṭ par jāi | naubat bājī phate kī, dīne dūt bhagāi |16|393|

Then the Guru's banners rose upon the fort; the drum of victory sounded, and the foe was put to flight.

Kalmot Attacks by Night

mil kai kalamoṭ ke log sabhai, phir juddh ko ān bhae ik ṭhaurai | māno andherī chalī uḍ kai, tin ke pag te basudhā par daurai | aisī hī sāj chaṛe tab hī dala, dekhat mūṛ bhae nirabhaurai | aise ajān mahā agiān su, jānat hai prabh ko kachh aurai |17|394|

All the Kalmot folk gathered again for battle in one place; as though a dust-storm rose and ran along the earth at their feet. Such was the force that rode out; and, seeing it, the fools grew reckless. So ignorant, so unknowing — they take the Lord to be something merely other.

mil kai sabh kalamoṭīana, gah gāḍhe man dhīr | tale ān kalamoṭ ke, bahut chalāe tīr |18|395|

All the men of Kalmot gathered, holding firm the patience of their minds; they came below Kalmot fort and loosed many arrows.

sāhib siu ketan kahayo, dal āe hai pher | bachan kiyo kāran karana, hovan dehu saver |19|396|

Some told the Sahib: ‘The host has come again.’ The Cause of causes spoke: ‘Let the morning come first.’

sagal rain ih bhānt kari, chale su tīr apār | kis hī ke lāgayo nahīn, rākh liyo karatār |20|397|

All night in this manner countless arrows flew; not one struck a single man — the Creator kept them safe.

nis bītī yah bhānt kari, rav kīno pragās | bidā kiyo tāhī samai, prem khālasā khās |21|398|

When the night had passed thus and the sun shone forth, at that hour he gave the leave — and the beloved, chosen Khalsa charged.

The Rout, and the Kahlur Raja's Submission

daur parayo dal gobind siṅgh ko, bāj chalayo chirīān pai dhāyo | aise kuraṅg pai siṅgh chalayo, tahān khālasā sikkh mahā prabalāyo | dekhat hī tih kī chhab mūṛu, mahā bhai mān mahā bhaj khāyo | bhāj gae ran mai na rahe, māno tīr chalayo gun te chhuṭakāyo |22|399|

Gobind Singh's force charged, as a hawk swoops down upon the sparrows; as a lion springs upon the deer, so the Khalsa Singh there rose most mighty. Seeing his splendour, the fool, in great terror, took to headlong flight; they fled and stayed not in the field, as an arrow flies loosed from the string.

chhoḍ khet kalamoṭ ko, bhaje mūṛ agajān | phate bhaī prabh purakh kī, rājan mānī ān |23|400|

Leaving the field of Kalmot, the ignorant fools fled; the victory was the Lord-Being's, and the rajas owned defeat.

rājā gaṛ kahilūr ko, milayo prabh so ān | satigur kī saranī gahī, chukayo man abhimān |24|401|

The Raja of the fort of Kahlur came and met the Lord; he grasped the True Guru's refuge, and the pride left his mind.

prabal bhayo tahān khālasā, satigur kai bal jān | bahur bisālī āiyo, satigur purakh sujān |25|402|

The Khalsa grew mighty there, a sacrifice unto the True Guru; then the True Guru, the wise Being, came again to Bisali.

sabh kautak āpe kiyo, āpe kiyo ujhār | phir ānand gaṛ bāndhio, bahu bidh kar bisathār |26|403|

He Himself wrought all these wondrous deeds, and Himself laid the foe's play to waste; then He built up Anandgarh once more, extending it in many ways.

Here ends the tenth chapter of the book Sri Gur Sobha — the victory of the battles of Bisali and Kalmot. May it be complete; may it be blessed.
