Chapter 11

Chapter 11 · The Second Battle of Anandgarh

The rajas and the imperial armies return to besiege Anandgarh a second time. Twice routed in open battle, they ring the fort in a starving blockade; through the famine the Sikhs raid for grain, and at last — under a sworn pledge — the Guru leaves Anandpur.

Anandgarh Rebuilt; the Rajas Grow Uneasy

pher basayo ānand gaṛu, rājan mānī ān | baisālī te kūch kari, base prabh tih thān |1|404|

Anandgarh was resettled, the rajas having owned defeat; the Lord marched from Bisali and dwelt in that place.

darasan karai nit khālasā, khusī hot nit nīt | sevā satigur kī karai, man antar kar prīt |2|405|

The Khalsa came daily for darshan, glad day upon day; they served the True Guru, with love within their hearts.

nagar nagar te khālasā āvat hai tih ṭhaur | daras karat prabh purakh ko, bhūm rahit nahīn aur |3|406|

From city upon city the Khalsa came to that place, for darshan of the Lord-Being; no land remained without them.

nikaṭ gānv jete basain, lae khālase jīt | ketak din ar dui barasa, yah bidh bhae bitīt |4|407|

Whatever villages lay near, the Khalsa won them over. Some days and two years passed in this way.

tabai khālasā aisī karai | hui asavār gānvan pai charai | jo āge te milanai āvai | basat rahe kachh bheṭ chaṛāvai |5|408|

Then the Khalsa would do this: mounted, they rode upon the villages; whoever came forward to meet them offered up some tribute of his goods.

karai bilamm bheṭ nahīn deī | tāko lūṭ khālasā leī | ih bidh charachā bhaī apārā | tab rājan man māh bichārā |6|409|

But whoever delayed and gave no tribute, him the Khalsa would plunder. Such talk spread far and wide; and the rajas took thought in their minds.

hamare rāj akārath gayo | satigur rāj chahu dis bhayo | tab bichār rājan man āyo | ṭhaur ṭhaur te log bulāyo |7|410|

‘Our rule has come to nothing; the True Guru's rule is now on every side.’ Then a resolve came to the rajas' minds, and they called out people from place to place.

The Second Battle of Anandgarh

tab rājan yah bidh karī, sainā laī bulāi | sakal saṅg dal jor kai, nikaṭ pahūche āi |8|411|

Then the rajas did thus: they summoned their army; joining all their hosts together, they came and reached nearby.

pher likhā rājan kiyo, sunahu, garīb nivāj ! ab chhāḍo ānand gaṛu, bhalī bāt hai āj |9|412|

Again the rajas wrote and sent: ‘Hear us, cherisher of the poor! Now leave Anandgarh — that is the best course today.’

prabh vāk aise bhayo, bahu bidh bhae taiyār | ṭhaur ṭhaur dhar morache, hon lagī tih mār |10|413|

The Lord's word came in answer; and in many ways they made ready for war. Trenches were set at every point, and the fighting began.

mil rājan aise kiyo, bāṇṭ laī sabh ṭhaur | chahū or te āvahī, phaujān daurā daur |11|414|

The rajas together did this: they divided all the positions among them; and from all four sides the armies came surging, wave upon wave.

top chhuṭai garajai ghan jo, larajai hijarā mano bijj kaṛakkai | ṭhaur rahe jih ke ur lāgata, hot hai chhātī ke pāṭ paṛakkai | yā bidh so tah golā chalai, ṭik hai nahīn sūramā tāhī kai dhakkai | rājan ke avasān gae, jab ānand koṭ te top chhuṛakkai |12|415|

The cannon fired, thundering like clouds; hearts trembled as lightning crashes. Whoever's chest it struck stayed fixed, his breastplate shattered; when the ball flew, no warrior could stand its shock — the rajas lost their very senses when the cannon fired from Anandgarh fort.

jih jan ke golā lagai, rahai jīv soī ṭhaur | man kī man hī mai rahita, kahit bachan nahīn aur |13|416|

The man the ball strikes stays fixed upon that spot; his mind stays in his mind alone — he can speak no other word.

kah ko kah bān chhuṭai kah kāhaka, aise avāj karai ran mai | tahān ḍār savār padhārat ghaurana, mārat ṭhaur nahīn man mai | tih bhānt yahai kar ḍārat hain, māno dāpī sī chob kharī ban mai | gir hai par hai kar hai ih bhānt su, ketak mār lae chhin mai |14|417|

The arrows fly with cries; the horsemen charge; there is no holding-place in the mind. They strike as drumsticks on a drum — falling, lying, striking so, in a moment many are slain.

top bān golī chalai, chhuṭat tīr apār | sāvan je bhārī bharani, iv barase nit sār |15|418|

Cannon, arrow and bullet fly; countless shafts are loosed; as Sawan's heavy downpour, so the steel rained down without end.

chaṛe siṅgh dal sāj kai, parai phauj mai dhāi | tahān mār yah bidh karī, rāje diyo uṭhāi |16|419|

The Singh host rode out arrayed, and fell charging into the army; there they made such slaughter that the rajas were driven off.

bahut rāv māre tahān, jodhā vaḍe apār | mil rāje masalat karati, kajā kariyai karatār |17|420|

Many chiefs were slain there, warriors great past counting; the rajas met in counsel: ‘What is to be done, O Creator?’

siṅgh bahut yah bidh karati, tih samān kahī nāh | baḍe sūramā at balī, mār liyo ran māh |18|421|

The Singhs made such havoc as had no equal; the greatest of warriors, the mighty, they laid low in the field.

The Rajas Turn to the Mughals Again

rāje bhāj turak pai āe | sabh turakan ko bhed batāe | ab hamaro uparālo kīje | ānand gaṛ ham ko lai dīje |19|422|

The rajas fled to the Turk, and told the Turks the whole matter: ‘Now give us your aid; win Anandgarh for us.’

turak sabhai mil kai uṭh dhāe | sāmā karī beg ho āe | bahut mugal ar ghane paṭhān | chaṛe sāj dala, chābe pān |20|423|

All the Turks rose and marched together; they made ready and came swiftly — many Mughals and many Pathans; they arrayed their host, and chewed the paan of resolve.

gajjar raṅghaṛ bahut apār | baḍe baḍe jodhā asavār | sīrand vāle hain hamarāhī | gaṛ lāhaur te phauj maṅgāī |21|424|

Gujjars and Ranghars past all number, and great warrior-horsemen; ‘the men of Sirhind are our comrades’; and a force was summoned from the fort of Lahore.

bahut phauj kar ekaṭhī, jamm saṅg milāi | sabh rājā dal jor kai, pher pahuche āi |22|425|

Gathering a great army, joining the Jammu forces with them, all the rajas mustered their host and came again.

khabar sunī kāran karana, pher kiyo pharamān | ṭhaur ṭhaur dhar morache, baiṭh rahe tih thān |23|426|

The Cause of causes heard the news, and gave his command once more; trenches were set at every point, and they sat in their places.

tīr bān golī chalī, barakhai dhuān dhār | tih pāchhe mil sūrame, karan gahī taravār |24|427|

Arrows, shafts and bullets flew, raining smoke and darkness; and behind them the warriors closed and gripped their swords.

bhabhake siṅgh jab jāi ran mai parai, kiyo saṅgrām yah bhānt pūrā | bajai sār so sār taravār chamakai ghanī, milit dono anī bajat tūrā | chhuṭat hai tīr tahān dhīr kis kī rahai, lagau jih jāi chhāḍe sarīrā | karai mār hī mār chahū or te dhāi kai, larat tih ṭhaur ih bhānt sūrā |25|428|

When the Singhs roar and fall into the fray, they wage the war to the full; steel rings on steel, the swords flash thick, both lines close and the trumpets sound. The arrows fly — whose courage can hold there? whom they strike gives up his body. Crying ‘strike, strike,’ charging from every side, the warriors fight there in this wise.

The Singhs Rout the Host

ek sūr sanamukh larai, karat bīr saṅgrām | ek bhāj pāchhe bhirai, tin te hot na kām |26|429|

One warrior fights face to face, waging heroic war; one flees to the rear — of such no work is done.

sūr sabhai aisī bidh karahī | dhāi dhāi phaujan mai parahī | bhire sūramā bahut apārā | karat mār kete hathiārā |27|430|

All the warriors do thus: charging again and again, they fall into the armies; countless warriors clashed, and many weapons made their slaughter.

aisī mār bhaī tih thāne | bāpah nāh put pahichāne | bahut sūr jujjhe dhar par hī | ik ghāil hun pāchhe par hī |28|431|

Such slaughter was there that father knew not son; many warriors fought and fell to earth, and one, wounded, fell behind.

ek sūr sanamukh uṭh dhāvai | ve marano te bilam na lāvai | pakarai sasat asat jo lehī | dubīā jo auran sir dehī |29|432|

One warrior rises and charges to the front, and delays not to die; one grasps whatever weapon comes to hand, and one gives his head for others' sake.

ek bhāj pīchhe phirai, ek ghāi behāl | ek jujh raṇ mai pare, sakalī samajh bisār |30|433|

One flees to the rear, one lies wounded and faint; one falls fighting in the field, all sense forgotten.

dekh tabai rājan kahayo, kajā kariyai karatār | siṅgh bahut ih bidh larata, nāh na parat sumār |31|434|

Seeing it, the rajas said: ‘What is to be done, O Creator? The Singhs fight so, past all counting.’

larat siṅgh ih bhānti, phauj mai parat dhāi kar | kāṭat hai tih muṇḍa, dharat par parat āi dhar | ih bidh kar saṅgrāma, sūr ran māh machāvai | nimakh bilam nahīn karai, loth par loth girāvai | kīne prahār ih bhānt kara, dekh rāv pāchhe phire | dīne biḍāra, bhāje apāra, kete sūr kar mai kare |32|435|

The Singhs fight thus, falling charging into the host; they strike off the heads, and the bodies fall to earth. So making war, the warriors rage in the field, delaying not a moment, felling corpse upon corpse. Making such blows — seeing it, the chiefs turned back; routed, they fled past number, and many warriors the Singhs finished with their hands.

binau karai dhiāiāi ko, ih bidh karai karār | pher na āvai juddh mai, jo chhūṭai ih bār |33|436|

They made their plea, and made this pledge: ‘We will not come again to battle, if we escape this time.

tajo gānv kahilūr ke, basai aur dis jāi | chhāḍ dae tāte tabai, bhāje pakh lagāi |34|437|

We will leave the villages of Kahlur, and go dwell in another quarter.’ So they gave up the siege then, and fled at full speed.

The Siege of Anandpur — Jeth, Sammat 1762

ketak din ih bhānt kara, bahut prabal bhaī mār | tab rājan masalat karī, sakal sabhā bichār |35|438|

For some days in this manner the fighting was most fierce; then the rajas took counsel, the whole assembly deliberating.

The Turks said to the rajas: ‘There is no better course than this — encircle them on every side, and sit fixed at that place.’

gujar raṅghaṛ aur paṭhān | rāje pare chahū dis ān | gher nagar bhānt yah kīnī | manah rasat sabh hī kar līnī |37|440|

Gujjars, Ranghars and Pathans, the rajas fell in from every side; they besieged the town in this way, cutting off all its supply-roads.

āvan jān na koū pāvai | tahān rasat kaise kar āvai | ketak din bīte bidh yāhī | ek rupaīe ser bikāhī |38|441|

None could come or go; how then could provisions reach that place? Some days passed thus, and a ser of grain sold for a rupee.

chār sikh pānī ko jāvai | do jujjhai do pānī lajāvai | aisī bhānt khel prabh karī | prithī anik dekh kai ḍarī |39|442|

Four Sikhs would go for water — two would fight, two would fetch it. Such a play the Lord made that the whole earth, seeing it, grew afraid.

ih bidh so bhārī kaṭhina, ān banī tih thāi | jo kachh andar so milai, soī sikh sabh khāi |40|443|

In this way a heavy, hard famine came upon that place; whatever was found within, all the Sikhs would eat.

ek rupīyai ser bikāvai | so bhī ḍhūḍhat hāth na āvai | mil jodhan ih bhānt nihārā | apane man ke bīch bichārā |41|444|

A ser sold for a rupee — and even that, though searched for, came not to hand. The warriors met and saw this, and pondered in their minds.

ketak siṅgh yahai bidh kar hī | rāt samai phaujan par par hī | kar saṅgrām ann tahān līnā | poṭai bāndh ketan sir dīnā |42|445|

Some Singhs did thus: by night they fell upon the enemy armies, made war, and seized grain there; some tied it in bundles and set it on their heads.

ketak juddh karat tih thāī | ketak poṭ liyo sir jāhī | ih bidh ann bahut lai āe | ketak din ih bhānt bitāe |43|446|

Some fought at that place; some bore the bundle on their heads; thus they brought back much grain, and passed some days in this way.

tab ih bidh sūran karī, ketak din gujarān | kharach khāt pūran bhae, phir pahuche tih thān |44|447|

The warriors did this for the passing of some days; but when the stores ran out, the enemy again pressed close upon that place.

The Famine, and the Guru's Teaching

tab rājan ih bidh karī, dharayo ann tah gher | nis bāsar jāgat rahai, phauj phirai chahū pher |45|448|

Then the rajas did thus: they set a blockade upon the grain; awake by night and day, the army patrolled on every side.

phirat phauj tab siṅgh nihārai | ab kih bidh kījai bīchārai | nāh na rāhu kaho kit jāvai | mārag kaun rasat lai āvai |46|449|

Seeing the patrolling host, the Singhs took thought: ‘By what means now shall it be done? There is no road — say, where can one go? By what path can provisions be brought?’

kariho juddh hon so hoī | ab mukh pher chalai mat koī | parai siṅgh phaujan mai dhāī | kiyo juddh sabh diyo uṭhāī |47|450|

‘We will make war, come what may; now let no man turn his face and flee.’ The Singhs fell charging into the armies, made war, and drove them all off.

girī loth pai loth apārā | tab rājan man māh chitārā | hoi ikatr sabh hī uṭh dhāe | chahū or te sūr risāe |48|451|

Corpse fell upon corpse past number; then the rajas thought in their minds, and gathering together, all rose and charged; and from every side the warriors raged.

larat larat din hui gayo, tab rājan iv kīn | chahū or dal sāj kai, gher siṅgh sabh līn |49|452|

Fighting and fighting, the day passed; then the rajas did thus: arraying their host on all four sides, they surrounded all the Singhs.

chahū or dal parā apārā | mār mār kah uṭhe pukārā | dhir dhir choṭ karai at bhārī | larai siṅgh mārai kilakārī |50|453|

On all four sides the boundless host closed in, crying ‘strike, strike’; from every side they struck heavy blows; the Singhs fight, raising their war-cries.

barakhai tīr meh at bhārā | golī lāgai jāh dusārā | lagai teg tih tan bisarāvai | parai bān kachh bilam na lāvai |51|454|

Arrows rain heavy as the monsoon; the bullet strikes and passes through; the sword strikes and the body is left; the arrow falls, delaying not a moment.

aise juddh bhayo tih bhārā | parī loth pai loth apārā | japai khālasā surat na aur | jujjhe siṅgh sabhai ik ṭhaur |52|455|

Such a heavy battle was there that corpse fell on corpse past number; the Khalsa chants the Name, mindful of nothing else; and all the Singhs fought at one place.

tab sikkhan mil kai karī, satigur pai aradās | siṅgh gae the rasat ko, saban taje mil sās |53|456|

Then the Sikhs together made their ardas to the True Guru: ‘The Singhs had gone for provisions; all together they gave up their breath.’

binā hukam ve kiun gae ? satigur kahī sunāi | mukat kiyo tin saban ko, jo jujjhe ran pāi |54|457|

‘Why did they go without my command?’ the True Guru said. Yet he granted liberation to all those who had fallen fighting in the field.

sadā kamar bāndhe rahai, darasan dekh aghāi | jo kachh milai hajūr te, tabai sikkh kachh khāi |55|458|

‘Stay ever girded and ready; take your fill of darshan; and whatever comes from the Presence, only that let the Sikh eat.’

nis bāsar jāgat rahai, phirat rahai chahu or | ih bidh chaukī det hai, mat chaṛ āvai chor |56|459|

Night and day they stay awake, patrolling on every side; thus they set the watch, lest a grain-fetcher come up.

is hī bhānt kaī din gae | nagar log ṭhāḍhe sabh bhae | dar ke āge karī pukārā | ann binā jīu jāi hamārā |57|460|

Several days passed in this way; and all the townsfolk stood in distress, and cried out before the door: ‘Without grain our lives depart.

dekhahu yah havāl ab bhayo | rahe su hāḍ chām uḍ gayo | bin bhojan jīvan ab nāhī | so bī jaihain sāñjh subāhī |58|461|

See what state has now come upon us — only bone and skin remain, the flesh flown off. Without food there is no living now; and that life too will go by evening or by morning.’

ih bidh nagar sabhai haṭh gahayo | tāh samai prabh ne im kahayo | ketak din tum aur thitāvai | phir man icchhe bhojan khāvai |59|462|

Thus the whole town held firm to this plea. At that hour the Lord spoke thus: ‘Endure yet a few days more; then you shall eat food to your heart's desire.

The Guru Leaves Anandgarh — 7 Poh, Sammat 1762

chhāḍe te ānand gaṛu, hot bīr saṅgrām | baḍe siṅgh jodhā balī, te jujjhai tih thān |60|463|

When Anandgarh is left, there will be a warriors' battle; the great Singh warriors, the mighty, will fight at that place.’

sabh sikkhan aise kahayo, burā hot nahīn koi | chhāḍ chalo ānand gaṛu, bhalī bāt hai soi |61|464|

All the Sikhs said thus: ‘No harm will come; let us leave Anandgarh — that is the good course.’

satigur kahī, suno, bidh sāī | burā hot tumare sir bhāī | yo sabh so tauhad likhavāe | hohu tayār tabai phuramāe |62|465|

The True Guru said: ‘Listen — this is the Lord's own way; harm will fall upon your heads, brothers.’ Yet he had them all write a pledge; ‘Be ready,’ he then commanded.

nagar bhayo ih bhānt tayārā | bāndhe bojh liyo sir bhārā | sāmān sabhai kūch kā kīno | āpan bojh āp sir līno |63|466|

The town made ready thus; they tied their bundles and took the load on their heads; they made all ready for the march, each taking his own load upon his own head.

sāmān sabhai kūch kā kīnā | sikkhan bāṇṭ khajānā dīnā | sabhan pāñch hathiār badhāe | siṅgh sūr ban ban sabh āe |64|467|

All made ready for the march; the Sikhs were given the treasury, shared out; all were given the five weapons — and the Singh warriors came, each fully arrayed.

aur basat jetī hutī, dīnī sabhai jalāi | chhoḍ chale ānand gaṛu, nimakh bilam nahīn lāi |65|468|

Whatever other goods there were, they set them all afire; and they left Anandgarh, not delaying a single moment.

Here ends the eleventh chapter of the book Sri Gur Sobha — the telling of the second battle of Anandgarh. May it be complete; may it be blessed.
