Chapter 12

Chapter 12 · The Battle of Chamkaur

The earliest telling of Chamkaur: leaving Anandpur, Bhai Ude Singh's stand at Shahi Tibbi, and the encircled fortress where the Singhs and the Guru's sons — Ajit Singh, Jujhar Singh and the young Sahibzadas — meet martyrdom with Waheguru on their lips, winning glory like their grandfather Guru Tegh Bahadur.

Leaving Anandpur, and the Road to Chamkaur

satigur kripā te kaho, dhiāv bīr saṅgrām | yathā sakat upamā kaho, jodhan ke parakāmā |1|469|

By the True Guru's grace I tell of the warriors' battle; as best my strength allows, I sing the valorous deeds of the warriors.

sāhī ṭibbī ān kai, khaṛe bhae tih thān | rājā ar turakān sabha, nikaṭ pahūche ān |2|470|

Coming to Shahi Tibbi, they stood at that place; and the rajas and all the Turks reached close behind.

ude siṅgh lalakār kai, khusī karī karatār | saphal janam yah bhānt kahi, dūtan karo saṅghār |3|471|

Bhai Ude Singh raised his war-cry, and gladdened the Creator; saying ‘This is a birth made fruitful,’ he fell to cutting down the foe.

ude siṅgh ko chhor kai, chal āe tih ṭhaur | bāg dekh baiṭhe tahān, nikaṭ gānv chamakaur |4|472|

Leaving Ude Singh to hold the rear, they came on to that place; seeing a garden, they halted there, near the village of Chamkaur.

khabar sunī jimīdār ne, maddh basai chamakaur | sunat bachan tatakāl hī, vah āyo uṭh daur |5|473|

The zamindar heard the news — Chamkaur lay in the midst; hearing the word, at once he rose and came running.

hāth jor aise kahayo, binatī suno, karatār ! baso maddh chamakaur kai, apanī kripā dhār |6|474|

With hands joined he said: ‘Hear my plea, O Creator! Dwell here in the midst of Chamkaur, and grant me your grace.’

tabai sūr sāhib bhae, chhāḍ bāg kī ṭhaur | siṅgh sāth sabh hī liyo, āi base chamakaur |7|475|

Then the warrior-Lord left the garden place, and taking all the Singhs with him, came and lodged at Chamkaur.

tab dūtan kīne likhe, tum chal āyo daur | siṅgh rahe hain ān kai, nikaṭ gānv chamakaur |8|476|

Then the foe wrote: ‘Come at speed — the Singhs have come and stayed near the village of Chamkaur.’

Bhai Ude Singh's Stand at Shahi Tibbi

ṭhaur ṭhaur kīne likhe, aise dūt gavār | ude siṅgh pīchhe rahā, sunahu tāh bīchār |9|477|

From place to place they wrote thus, those foolish foes. Ude Singh had stayed behind to hold the rear — hear now his account.

rājā ar turakān sabha, nikaṭ pahuche āi | ude siṅgh tin mai parayo, nimakh bilam nahīn lāi |10|478|

The rajas and all the Turks came close; and Ude Singh fell upon them, delaying not a moment.

daur kai dhāi jab jāi ran mai parayo, bhale asavār aise pachhāre | girī hai loth chhab yon dharī tāh kī, basat suke dhare sar kināre | sron kai raṅg mai lāl hui bhui pare, mano raṅgarej raṅg raṅg ḍāre | paun paravāh jah bhānt bhārī bahayo, gire hain rukh aise apāre |11|479|

Charging in, when he fell into the battle, he overthrew the good horsemen so; corpses fell, wearing such a look as dried things laid on a lakeshore. Red in the hue of blood, they lay on the earth, as though the dyer had cast his dye. Where a heavy wind blows and trees fall, so boundlessly they fell.

pahar ek lau ran parayo, mahān prabal ik sār | ude siṅgh jujjhai tabai, satigur saran bichār |12|480|

For a full watch the battle raged, most mighty, all as one; then Ude Singh fell a martyr, his thought fixed in the True Guru's refuge.

Chamkaur Encircled

kete siṅgh sāth lai lai hathiār hātha, parai dhāi phaujan mai bhārī ran kar hī | kinahu taravār kinahī līnī barachhī sambhāri, mukh te kah mār mār dhāi dhāi par hī | kauū chalāvai bāna, kis hī kar mai kamāna, mārat hai tīr dhīr lage te na dhar hī | aisī karī hai māri, nāh na kachh vār pāri, loth kai kiyo pahāra, aise siṅgh lar hī |13|481|

Some Singhs, weapons in hand, fell charging into the armies, making heavy war; some gripped the sword, some took up the spear; crying ‘strike, strike,’ charging they fell on. One looses an arrow, another with bow in hand; the arrows strike, and where they strike the wounded hold no ground. Such slaughter they made, with no this-side or that; they raised a mountain of corpses — so the Singhs fight.

pahir ek lau jo lare, siṅgh tabai ik sār | larat larat jujjhe sabhai, satigur saran bichār |14|482|

For a full watch they fought, all the Singhs as one; fighting and fighting, they all fell martyred, their thought in the True Guru's refuge.

tāh samai dal dekh kai, hoi rahai hairān | āp karan kāran tahān, dekh rahe sabh thān |15|483|

At that time, watching the host, the Lord looked on in wonder; He, the Cause of causes, surveyed every position.

likhe bahut chamakaur te, tabai pahuche ān | kar sāmā phir juddh kī, sabh pahuche tih thān |16|484|

Many wrote from Chamkaur, and the foe arrived; making ready for battle again, all reached that place.

ṭhaur ṭhaur dhar morache, tabai pahuche āi | rachayo juddh tāhī samai, daī palītī lāi |17|485|

Setting trenches at every point, they came up; battle was joined at that hour, and they set the fuses alight.

chahu or sab dal khare, bīch siṅgh gobind | tāh samai chhab yo kaho, jayo tāran mai chand |18|486|

On all four sides all the hosts stood; and in the midst, Guru Gobind Singh — at that hour his splendour, I say, was like the moon amid the stars.

girad āi sabh dal khare, khet bār jiu hoi | tih samān gherā pare, chahu dis rāh na koi |19|487|

All the host came and stood around, as a hedge around a field; such was the siege closed, no road on any side.

The Singhs Fight to the Last

māno ghaṭā umaḍī chahū or te, yo umaḍe dal dūt ke āī | gher laī chamakaur sabai su, rahayo nahīn rāh kaho kit jāhī | chāre disā dal ān pare, tah dekhat siṅgh uṭhe bhabhakāhī | sāhib siu tab lot khusī, man mai kar ānand jujjhan jāhī |20|488|

As storm-clouds surge from every side, so surged the enemy host in its coming; they ringed all Chamkaur — no road remained, say, where could one go? The hosts fell in from all four quarters; seeing it, the Singhs rose up roaring. Then the beloved rejoiced in their Master, and with bliss in their hearts they go to fight.

āj manajūr pare dar gobind siṅgh hī kai ju kahai sabh hī | kar mai gah vār jujhār baḍe, ran māh pare na rahe tab hī | sabh āpas mo mil lot khusī, aiso ab dāv bhayo na kab hī | sabh ant kī bār sambhār prabhu, kar hai iv sār larai jab hī |21|489|

‘Today we are accepted at the door of Gobind Singh!’ — so they all say. Gripping their blades, the great warriors fell into the field and held nothing back. All together, delighting in one another: ‘Never has such a chance come before. Guard the Lord to the very last!’ — and so they fight to the end.

garaj kai siṅgh jo jāi ran mai pare, kiyo hai loh aise batāe | kisī karavār jamadhār nejā kisī, kisī bandūk tīre chalāe | sūr sambhār hathiār pāñche kare, mār hī mār jodhā girāe | bhae bhaimān pai jān aisī samai, kāl ke rūp im siṅgh āe |22|490|

Roaring, the Singhs went and fell into the battle, wielding steel and showing such valour: some with sword and dagger, some with spear, some loosing gun and arrow. Bearing all five weapons, crying ‘strike, strike,’ they felled the enemy warriors; at such an hour they came upon the fearful like the very form of Death.

daur daur phaujan mai par hī | siṅgh sabhai aisī bidh kar hī | baje sār so sār apārā | jhaṛ jhaṛāk bājai hunakārā |23|491|

Charging again and again they fall into the armies; all the Singhs do thus; steel rings on boundless steel, and crash on clatter the report resounds.

paṛ paṛāk dharatī par par hī | jujjhe sūr bahut tah mar hī | ik ghāil hun gire bihālā | ek na āp taje tatakālā |24|492|

With a thud they fall to the earth; many warriors fought and died there; one, wounded, fell faint; one gave up his own life at once.

One flees and comes not near again; one, face to face, wages war. The Singhs fight thus, boundlessly; a battle-rapture rose in them, and they were as drunk with it.

golī lāgai jāi girīne | basat lāl aṅg sabh kīne | chahu or chamakai taravārī | chhuṭai tīr kachh vār na pārī |26|494|

The bullet strikes and a warrior falls, his whole body made red; on all four sides the swords flash; arrows fly, with no this-side or that.

golī lāgai jāh dusārā | barasai set meh at bhārā | jujjhai siṅgh sabhai ik sārā | japai khālasā bārambār |27|495|

The bullet strikes and passes through; the white smoke rains most heavy; all the Singhs fight as one, and the Khalsa chants the Name again and again.

The Guru Sends Sahibzada Ajit Singh into Battle

tāh samai kāran karana, līno siṅgh bulāi | kahī siṅgh raṇajīt so, dūtan dehu sajāi |28|496|

At that time the Cause of causes called a Singh; he said to Singh Ranjit — the elder Sahibzada Ajit Singh: ‘Chastise the foe.’

binau karī kar jor kai, khusī karau karatār | karau bīr saṅgrām mai, dekhau āp nihār |29|497|

Hands joined, he made his plea: ‘Be pleased, O Creator; I will wage the warriors' war — watch me with your own eyes.’

bhaī as vāja, ab jāha, raṇajīt siṅgh ! tum karo saṅgrām dūtan saṅghāre | khusī tāhī samai laī guradev so, ān ran māh dal ko nihāro | karī āvāza, ab āu aramān jiha, sakal dal dekh daure apāre | gher chahu dis liyo ān turakān ne, karat saṅgrām raṇajīt bhāre |30|498|

A voice came: ‘Now go, Ranjit Singh! Wage war and cut down the foe.’ He took that blessing then from the Guru-Lord, and came into the battle and beheld the host. The call went out: ‘Come now, whoever longs for this!’ — and, seeing the whole host, boundless Singhs charged. The Turks had ringed them on all four sides, and Ranjit wages a mighty war.

tā din gaṛahu ran khambha, siṅgh raṇajīt dharat par | dharat laraj uṭhī dhūra, bhān chhip gayo āp ghar | pavan mand hui rahī, rain bhaī divas chhipāno | laraje sakal akāsa, top chhuṭī paramāno | bajayo nisān tihu lok mai sun devan man bhayo bhayo | chaṛ chaṛ bibān dekhan chale, su saṅkar samet nahīn ko rahayo |31|499|

That day Ranjit Singh was the pillar of the battle upon the earth. The earth trembled, the dust rose, the sun hid in its own home; the wind grew still, night fell and the day was hidden; the whole sky trembled, the cannon fired in volleys. The war-drum sounded through the three worlds; hearing it, the gods' hearts grew afraid; mounting their celestial cars they came to watch — none remained behind, not even Shiva himself.

tahān ān jogan kharī, nārad vāvai tūr | jīt siṅgh ran mai maḍayo, hot paṛū bharapūr |32|500|

There the yoginis came and stood, and Narad sounds his trumpet; Ajit Singh stormed into the battle, and their skulls were filled to the brim.

chahu or dal dekh kai, kar mai gahī kamān | ih bidh chalat apār sara, sāvan meh samān |33|501|

Seeing the host on all four sides, he took the bow in hand; boundless arrows flew, like the rains of Sawan.

jih sar lāgat jāi kai, rahit nāi aramān | mānahu maṇḍap khokharo, gir gir parat paṭhān |34|502|

The arrow that strikes home leaves no breath behind; as a hollow palace collapses, so the Pathans fall and fall.

kar mai gahai kamāna, juddh kīno asarā sar | jih ur mārat tīra, phor bakhatar su jāt sar | lagau tāh ko āna, mān kar rahit soi kar | bhūlat hai ghar bāra, sabhai sudh jāt bisar kar | māre paṭhān ih bhānt kari, jīt siṅgh tin mai pare | kar so kamān taj sāṅg gah su kete hathiāran lare |35|503|

Bow in hand, he waged the war, loosing the arrow of refuge; whose chest the arrow strikes, it pierces the armour and passes through. Whom it strikes, his pride is stilled; he forgets home and hearth, all sense lost. Slaying the Pathans thus, Ajit Singh fell among them; setting the bow aside, gripping the spear, he fought with weapon after weapon.

daurayo dal mai dhāi kai, lai kar sāṅg banāi | mārat jih asavār ko, chhin mai det girāi |36|504|

He charged into the host, taking the spear in hand; whatever horseman he strikes, in a moment he casts down.

Sahibzada Ajit Singh's Martyrdom

chale raṇajīt jab jāi ran mai paro, kiyo saṅgrām aise apāre | loth par loth tah ḍār ketī daī, bhabak kar rakat hui chale nāre | liyo kar sāṅg tih āṅg par dharat hain, tabai tatakāl tih ṭhaur māre | bhujan pai jor kar let uṭhāi kai, sabhan dikhalāi bhui māh ḍāre |37|505|

When Ranjit went and fell into the battle, he made such boundless war; corpse upon corpse he cast, and streams of blood ran roaring. He drives the spear into their bodies to the ground, and slays them there at once; by the strength of his arm he lifts them up, and showing all, dashes them to the earth.

let paroi paṭhān ko, sabhahan sāṅg dikhalāi | dekhat hī sabh karat hain, are khudāi khudāi |38|506|

He spits the Pathan on his spear and shows it to all; and seeing it, they all cry, ‘O God, O God!’

bhānt ih juddh raṇajīt bhārī kiyo, sabhai dal vāh vāh kah pukāre | tahān mār sāṅgan dharī, siṅgh aisī karī, loth par loth kīne kināre | rakat darīāu hui chale tih madh te, bahayo paravāh nahīn vār pāre | as pairat phirai, sūr aisī karai, āpane hāth dal yo saṅghāre |39|507|

So heavy a battle did Ranjit make that the whole host cried ‘Vah! Vah!’ in wonder. There he drove the spear, and the Singh so wrought that corpse lined upon corpse the field's edge. A river of blood ran through the midst, its current flowing with no near shore, no far; the horses swim in it — such the warrior does, slaughtering the host with his own hands.

karat mār chāre disā, jīt siṅgh asavār | sāṅg tajī kar te tabai, gah līnī taravār |40|508|

Making slaughter on all four sides, Ajit Singh the horseman; he set the spear aside then, and gripped the sword.

ṭūṭ kai sāṅg dui ṭūk hui bhui parī, gahī taravār dal bahut māre | ek ke sīs dhar dui ṭūkare karai, dui ke sīs dhar karat chāre | bhānt ih pūr paravāh dīne kaī, rakat darīāu mai pare sāre | gire bikarāl bahāl sudh kachh nahīn, pare ran māh sabh kachh bisāre |41|509|

When the spear broke in two and fell to the earth, he gripped the sword and slew much of the host; one man's head he cleaves in two, another's into four. Thus he sent many into the flood; all fell into the river of blood; the terrible ones fell senseless, no sense left, forgetting all as they lay in the field.

bahut juddh bhārī bhayo, nikaṭ gānv chamakaur | jih ke mārat vār gahi, tih mārat hai ṭhaur |42|510|

A great, heavy battle was there, near the village of Chamkaur; whomever he strikes, gripping his blade, he slays on the spot.

kiyo juddh ih bhānt kari, balī siṅgh raṇajīt | baḍe sūramā je hute, chun māre ih gīt |43|511|

Such war did the mighty Ranjit Singh make; the great warriors that were there, he picked out and slew — this is his song.

larat raṇajīt tih ṭhaur aisā kiyo, kaī dal mathan ko mār ḍāre | laī taravār ar vār aise kare, karai dui ṭūk bhui māh ḍāre | sron bhārī bahayo umaṅg darīāu jo, parī hai loth māno kināre | as pairat phirai, sūr aisī karai, kiyo bisrām aise apāre |44|512|

Fighting there, Ranjit did such that he slew champion after champion of the host; he took the sword and struck such blows, cutting men in two and casting them to earth. A great tide of blood ran, surging like a river, with corpses lying, as it were, upon its banks; the horses swim in it — such the warrior does, taking his rest amid the boundless carnage.

larat sūr saṅgrām mai, kar līne taravār ! baḍe sūr māre tahān, phaujan ke siradār |45|513|

Fighting in the warriors' war, sword in hand, he slew great warriors there — the very commanders of the host.

tab sabh kaṭak ikatū hun, pare chahu dis dhāi | kar mai gah karavār sabha, nikaṭ pahuche āi |46|514|

Then all the host together fell in from every side; swords gripped in hand, they all came near.

dekh tabai bidh aisī bhaī, rut phāgan jo māno khelan āyo | lāgat sāṅgan tegan tīra, tuphaṅgan sron chalayo bhabhakāyo | tāh samai chhab aisī bhaī, māno lāl gulāl ko raṅg banāyo | bāgo bane jih ke gal lāla, māno raṅgarej abai raṅg lajāyo |47|515|

Seeing it, such it was, as though the season of Phalgun had come to play its Holi. As spear, sword and arrow struck, and from the guns the blood spurted forth, such at that hour was the sight, as though bright crimson gulal were flung; the garments red about their necks, as though the very dyer's dye were put to shame.

tan jhārī kar sūramā, sron raṅg bhar līn | chhirak chhirak tan raṅgiyo, phāgan kī rut kīn |48|516|

The warrior, drenching his body, is filled with the hue of blood; sprinkling and sprinkling, his body dyed, he made a Phalgun springtime of it.

ān jogan kharī, liyo paṛū arī, karai bharapūr raṇajīt pajāre | tum binā kon yah paṛū pūrā karai, kaun saṅgrām jo kare bhāre | gidh maṇḍalāt ar nāch nārad karai, sūr anaganat tahān ṭhaur māre | juddh bhārī bhayo madh chamakaur ke, kiyo saṅgrām aise apāre |49|517|

The yoginis came and stood, taking up their skulls, as Ranjit fills them brimming: ‘Without you, who would fill this skull full? who would wage so heavy a war?’ The vultures wheel and Narad dances; countless warriors he slew on the spot; a great battle was in the midst of Chamkaur, and such boundless war he made.

lagī kār asavār kai, kīne kām apār | piyo piālā prem kā, magan bhayo asavār |50|518|

The horseman fell to his appointed work, and did deeds beyond number; then he drank the cup of love, and the horseman was lost in its rapture.

tāh samai aise kahayo, gobind saran bichār | āj khās bhayo khālasā, satigur kai darabār |51|519|

At that hour Gobind, the refuge, spoke thus: ‘Today the Khalsa has become the chosen, the consummate, in the True Guru's court.’

rās rachai ban mai har jī, chhab tā din tāhī kiyo ran pāyo | bājat sār so sār apāra, karai hunakār su yo pun lāyo | sūr sabhai mil khelat phāgana, dekhat rās unīde hī āyo | lāl nihālī kī sej kiyo sara, sovat sūr palaṅgh bichhāyo |52|520|

As Lord Krishna dances the Ras in the forest, such was the splendour of the battle he made that day; steel rings on boundless steel, and the roar arises again. All the warriors together play the Holi; drowsy watchers came to see the Ras; they made a crimson-quilted couch, and the warriors lie sleeping, their beds spread out.

hit chit kai tāhī samai, charan kaval so dhayān | vāhagurū mukh te kahayo, samai ant kī tān |53|521|

With loving heart at that hour, his mind fixed on the lotus-feet, ‘Waheguru’ from his lips he said — at the very hour of the end.

dekhan ko bidh jo hī bhaī, prabh kī gat ko kauū kā mit jāne | jujh pare ki gae kitahu disa, dekh rahai kinahu na pachhāne | lothan mai nahīn loth parī, nikase kitahu kinahu nahīn māne | ek bichār bichār kiyo, kauū tāko bichār bichār na āne |54|522|

To behold what came to pass — who can know the measure of the Lord's way? Whether he fell fighting or went off in some direction, they look, but none can tell. Among the corpses his corpse was not found; whether he passed out somewhere, none can say. Each pondered one thought and another, but to none did the true understanding come.

Sahibzada Jujhar Singh

jab dekhayo jujhār siṅgha, samā pahuchayo ān | daurayo dal mai dhāi kai, kar mai gaho kamān |55|523|

When Jujhar Singh saw that his hour had come, he charged into the host, his bow gripped in hand.

dal mai ju dhasayo balavant balī, ih bhānt so tīr chalāvat hai | jih ke ur mārat det girāi, pare ran mai bilalāvat hai | girī loth pai loth apār tahān, kharī jogan paṛū purāvat hai | ih bhānt jujhār karai ran bhāri, su yon ran mai ran pāvat hai |56|524|

The mighty one plunged into the host, loosing arrows thus; whom he strikes in the chest he casts down, and they fall crying in the field. Corpse fell on boundless corpse there, the yoginis standing to fill their skulls; so Jujhar makes a heavy battle, and so in the field he wins the field.

kar mai gahe kamāna, tīr yah bhānt chalāvai | jih ur mārat dhāi, jāt bidh bilam na lāvai | nikasai jāi dusāra, girai asavār ant tah | chhin mai tajai su prāna, tīr lāgat jāi jih | māre paṭhān yah bhānt kahi, chahū or lothai parai | nāh na sumāra, ete apāra, aise jujhār tin mai larai |57|525|

Bow in hand, he looses arrows thus; whom he strikes in the chest, the arrow speeds without delay, comes out the far side, and the horseman falls dead there; in a moment he gives up his life. Slaying the Pathans so, on all four sides the corpses fall, past counting, so boundless — so Jujhar fights among them.

chahū or dal dekh kai, nikaṭ pahuche āi | tab nejā kar mai liyo, nimakh bilam nahīn lāi |58|526|

Seeing the host close in from every side, he took the lance in hand, delaying not a moment.

aise hī chalio jab barachhī phirāvai hātha, let hai paroi māno phūl poīat hai | gundabe ko hār ḍhāra, ḍhār ḍhārī ghanasāra, paun paravāh bahayo aise joīat hai | barachhā lagāvai jāhi, let hai paroi tāhi, sabhan dikhalāi ḍhār yo biroīat hai | sron ko agam nīra, dekh kai rahai na dhīra, tāhī mai ju loth ḍhār yo ḍaboīat hai |59|527|

As he goes wheeling the spear in hand, he strings the slain upon it as though flowers are threaded into a garland; pouring them like a garland to be strung, like camphor scattered on the wind. Whomever he pierces with the spear, he strings upon it, showing all how he threads them on the point. Seeing the unfathomable water of blood, one holds no calm; and in it he sinks the corpses from his spear-point.

yā bidh so lar hai tah sūramā, ketak mār lae chhin māhī | ḍhār savār bithār ghane, tih dekhat bhāj pare haṭ jāhī | mār hī mār pukārat hai, sabh tīr tuphaṅgan choṭ chalāhī | yā bidh dekh gahī kar teg su, siṅgh paro ran mai bhabhakāhī |60|528|

So the warrior fights there, slaying many in a moment; the mounted riders spread wide, and seeing him they flee and fall back. Crying ‘strike, strike,’ all loose arrows and gun-fire; seeing it thus, he gripped the sword, and the Singh fell roaring into the battle.

karat saṅgrām jo jāi ran mai paro, māre ih bhānt nah ṭarat sūrā | liyo taravār ar vār aise kare, ek te doi kar karat pūrā | loth par loth tah ḍhār ketī daī, paun paravāh chal parat kūrā | mār tegan dharī, siṅgh aisī karī, larat jujhār bājant tūrā |61|529|

Waging war as he fell into the field, the warrior turns not, but slays so; sword in hand he strikes such blows, making one man two, and finishing them whole. Corpse on corpse he cast, and the wind blows the chaff away; the Singh drove the sword so, Jujhar fighting on while the war-trumpets sound.

dal mai ju dhasayo kar mai gah tega, karī bidh yo mil sūran saṅge | hāth so vār gahe jin ke, tin ke sir det hai tegan saṅge | yā bidh so ran ḍhārat hai, mil kai sabh sūr gae tih saṅge | dekh jujhār rahayo tab hī, ab kaun upāv karo prabh saṅge |62|530|

He plunged into the host, sword in hand, and closed with the warriors so; those who took blade to him, their heads he gives to the sword. So he wrought the battle, until all the warriors fell together with him. Watching Jujhar, [the Lord] then paused — what device now to make with the Lord?

Sahibzada Zorawar Singh, and Bhai Sant Singh

jor jurāvar siṅgh chaṛayo, ran mai ju pare tih aise kare hai | ek so ek ko doi kare, dui chār kare dal aise dare hai | it te ut jāi phirai ut te, phir maddh parai nah naik ḍare hai | sāṅgan nejan tīran tegana, sūran ke saṅg aise lare hai |63|531|

Sahibzada Zorawar Singh charged with force; falling into the battle he did thus: one man he made two, two he made four, so he crushed the host. From here to there he goes, and back from there; again into the midst he falls, fearing not a whit; with spears, lances, arrows and swords, so he fought among the warriors.

khaiñchat khaṛag jad mārat saṛak gira, paṛat taṛak asavār āge tāhī ke | girat bihāl bikarāl sudh nāhīn kachhu, loṭat dharat jo kapot sut sāhī ke | aise māre asavār ek ek ḍhār ḍhāra, māno kejham bajār māh pat birakhāhī ke | kaun hai kahai bichāra, nāhīn kachh pārāvāra, jurāvar siṅgh dal māre rāī rāī ko |64|532|

Drawing his sword, when he strikes, heads fall with a hiss; the horseman drops with a crack before him. Falling senseless, terrible, all sense gone, they roll on the earth as pigeons before the falcon's young. Thus he slew the horsemen, one by one, pouring, pouring, as in a storm-wind the leaves of trees are scattered. Who can tell the count? there is no end or shore; Zorawar Singh slew the host, scattering them like mustard-seed.

paṭak puṭak kai kaṭak ko, jhaṭak nikas gayo pār | jorāvar prabh jor kari, rākh liyo karatār |65|533|

Dashing and hurling the host aside, with one wrench he burst through to the far side; Zorawar — the Lord giving him strength — the Creator kept him safe.

sant siṅgh tāhī samai, gah līnī taravār | daurayo dal mai dhāi kai, pher na aisī bār |66|534|

Bhai Sant Singh at that time gripped the sword, and charged into the host — for never would such an hour come again.

aise lalakārat hai, pās te pachārat hai, sūran ko mārat hai, ḍhārat hai ran mai | tīkhī taravār siṅgh tāhī so karai ju vāra, chamakai yā bhānt māno dāman jo ghan mai | tīran so bhayo meha, lage ur bhijī deha, lāg rahe yāhī bidh roman jo tan mai | aisī bhaī hai māra, nāh na kachh pārāvāra, māno āj phūl ḍol khel chale ban mai |67|535|

So he raises war-cries, challenges those near him, slays the warriors, pours them down in the field. The sharp sword the Singh wields, striking such blows, flashes like the lightning in the cloud. The arrows became a downpour; where they struck the chest, the body was drenched; they stood thick in the flesh as the very hairs upon it. Such slaughter was there, with no end or shore, as though today the flowers sway in play, gone out into the forest.

pare jo jāi khunasāi tāhī samai, kiyo saṅgrām aise apāre | teg sambhār kai, det asavār kai, karai do ṭūk bhui māh ḍāre | ḍhār kai srūr te jīn khālī kiyo, sūr anek tih ṭhaur māre | bahut ghāil bhayo, sron tan te gayo, jujh kai khet mai jo bichāre |68|536|

Falling in wrath at that time, he made such boundless war; wielding the sword he strikes the horseman, cutting him in two and casting him to earth; pouring the riders from their saddles, he emptied the saddles and slew many warriors on the spot. Sore-wounded, his blood pouring from his body, he fought and fell in the field.

kahai khālasā khālasā, dūsar aur na ās | vāhigurū mukh te kahayo, sant siṅgh taje sās |69|537|

‘The Khalsa, the Khalsa!’ he cries — no other hope; ‘Waheguru’ upon his lips, Bhai Sant Singh gave up his breath.

bahut sūr jujjhe tahān jodhā baḍe apār | gah kamān tāhī samai, bhae āp asavār |70|538|

Many warriors fought and fell there, mighty ones past number; and at that hour the Lord himself took up the bow and mounted.

The Guru Takes the Bow; the Sons Win Glory

tab hī gah bān kamān gahī, kar mai saj kai dal ko uṭh dhāe | mārat tīr bilamm nahīn kachhu, choṭ pai choṭ karai dhun lāe | tāh samai prabh kautak kai, ik dūt ne choṭ karī khunasāe | jo prabh jī karanī iv hī, ik uṅgal porā rahī tih thāe |71|539|

Then, taking up the bow, arraying it in hand, the Lord rose and charged the host; loosing arrows without delay, blow upon blow he strikes, sounding the string. At that hour, in the Lord's play, one foe struck a blow in his fury — yet, such being the Lord's own will, it grazed but a single finger-joint, and no more.

prabh rachanā aisī bhaī, chale avar dis dhāi | pai kinahu dekhayo nahīn, im prabh bhae sahāi |72|540|

Such was the Lord's arranging: he moved off in another direction, yet none saw him go — thus the Lord was his own helper.

jo dal mai dal bākī rahe, mil kai sabh hī chamakor pai dhāe | sāhibajāde liyo gah kai, mil kai jin ko sabh sīrand lāe | bhārī jabāb jujhār dae, sun kai sabh dūtan aṅg pirāe | jo prabh ko karanī tab hī, doū jujhat hī prabh lok sidhāe |73|541|

The host that yet remained all together fell upon Chamkaur; they closed upon the Sahibzadas — Jujhar Singh and Fateh Singh — whom all the Sirhind force set on. Jujhar gave a mighty answer in battle; hearing it, the limbs of all the foe grew faint. Such then was the Lord's will: both, fighting to the last, the Guru's sons departed to the Lord's own realm.

dhan dhan guradev suta, tan ko lobh na kīn | dharam rākh kal mo gae, dāde so jas līn |74|542|

Blessed, blessed the Guru's sons — they held no love for the body; upholding dharma they departed in this dark age, winning glory like their grandfather, Guru Tegh Bahadur.

phate siṅgh jujhār siṅgha, ih bidh taje prān | pragaṭ bhae tihu lok mai, jānat sakal jahān |75|543|

Fateh Singh and Jujhar Singh gave up their lives in this way; they shone forth through the three worlds, and the whole world knows their name.

Here ends the twelfth chapter of the book Sri Gur Sobha — the telling of the battle of Chamkaur. May it be complete; may it be blessed.
