Chapter 13

Chapter 13 · From Chamkaur to Malwa, and the Battle of Muktsar

The Guru leaves Chamkaur as the Formless One who has renounced all; wins the battle of Muktsar in the Brar country; and sends Bhai Daya Singh, disguised, on the long road to the Deccan to place his letter — the Zafarnama — in Aurangzeb's own hand. It closes in a garland of Punjabi pauris on the Guru's word and the shelter of the refuge.

The Formless One Leaves Chamkaur

niraṅkār apār gati, bahu bidh kar bisathār | sabhai chhāḍ chhin mai diyo, rahayo su ekaṅkār |1|544|

The Formless One, of boundless state, spread Himself out in a thousand ways; then in a moment He left all, and remained the One, Ekankar.

chhoḍ chamakor karatār tāhī samai, rūp yo dhār dis or āyo | chhoḍ dhan dhām sut bandh dārā sabhai, ek aṅkār ho yo dikhāyo | sarab samān chhin māh aise taje, bhekh nirabān ke rūp āyo | siṅgh gobind im pher rachanā rachī, dharan akās tāte ṭikāyo |2|545|

Leaving Chamkaur at that hour, the Creator, taking such a form, came off toward another quarter. Leaving wealth, home, sons, kin and wife — leaving all — He showed himself thus as the One alone. All alike, in a moment, He renounced, and came in the garb and form of the utterly detached. So Guru Gobind Singh made his play anew — He on whom earth and sky are set.

niraṅkār ākār kari, manasā man bīchār | mukat karan sansār ko, pragaṭ bhayo karatār |3|546|

The Formless took form, resolving in His mind, to set the world free — the Creator became manifest.

karan karāvan hār prabhu, samarath siṅgh gobind | kalā dhār pragaṭ bhayo, chahu dis bhayo anand |4|547|

The Doer and Cause of all, the all-powerful Guru Gobind Singh, wielding his power, became manifest; and on all four sides was bliss.

kal mai kal dhār akār kiyo, kar āpan dūt saṅghāran ko | chamakī dis chār nūn jot mahā, jag pāp samūh biḍāran ko | kar khālas jāp dae har ne, hathiār apār jujhāran ko | gur gobind siṅgh kiyo itanā, bhav sāgar pār utāran ko |5|548|

In this dark age He took form to strike down the demon-foe; His great light flashed on all four sides, to shatter the whole mass of the world's sin. Making them the Khalsa, Hari gave them the Name to chant, and boundless weapons for the warriors. So much did Guru Gobind Singh do — to ferry souls across the ocean of existence.

The Guru in the Brar Country

rūp anek prabh im dhāre | jīv kahā gat tāh bichāre | tab prabh bairāran mah āe | sabh siṅghan mil darasan pāe |6|549|

The Lord took many forms thus — what can a creature grasp of His state? Then the Lord came into the Brar country, and all the Singhs met him and had his darshan.

janam janam kī mail bināsī | nainan dekhayo prabh abināsī | chintā phikar gayo dukh dūre | dīne daras jabai gur pūre |7|550|

The filth of many births was destroyed; with their eyes they beheld the imperishable Lord; worry, care and sorrow fled far away, when the perfect Guru gave his darshan.

augun meṭ sabhai gun kīne | aisā dān dayā kar dīne | adham karam taj niramal bhae | satigur saran sikh jo gae |8|551|

Effacing every fault, he made them all virtue; such a gift of grace he gave. Forsaking base deeds they became pure — those Sikhs who came to the True Guru's refuge.

sāir ek apār saru, subhar bharayo tih nīr | tih sar kīnī chhāvanī, gobind siṅgh gahīr |9|552|

There was one boundless tank, a great pool brimming with water; by that tank the deep Guru Gobind Singh made his camp.

The Battle of Muktsar

sikh gobind tih ṭhaur kīnī majā, bajai ghanaghor anāhad pūrā | paḍhai siṅgh din rain tih ṭhaur ih bhānti, bānī gur mārū su bājant tūrā | kaḍhai mukh pāṭh kav chhand saṅgrām ke, sunat ānand so sabhai sūrā | bhayo jaikār tuī lok chaudah bhavana, sune te dūt kāmpe sarīrā |10|553|

There Guru's Sikhs took their joy, while the thunderous unstruck melody resounded in full. Day and night the Singhs recite there, and the Guru's Word in Raag Maru sounds like a war-trumpet; they read aloud the poet's battle-verses, and all the warriors hear them with bliss. A cry of victory rose through the fourteen worlds; hearing it, the bodies of the foe trembled.

bhanak prabh kī tabai sunī dūtān ne, phauj sīgār ke pher dhāe | dekh aise kahayo jāhu saṅgrām ko, pher ve phauj lai turak āe | siṅgh chāro disā daur dal mai pare, siṅgh siṅghān hujai sahāe | mār aisī karai sūr tāhī samai, bhae gah gāḍ dal yo girāe |11|554|

Then the foe caught a whisper of the Lord's whereabouts, and, arraying their army, marched again; ‘Go to battle,’ they said, and once more the Turks came with their host. The Singhs charged into the army from all four sides, Singh aiding Singh; such slaughter the warriors made at that time that they seized and felled the host.

khet kisān tih bhānt aisā kiyo, dharan te dharat pai muṇḍ ḍāre | teg chegān ar sīs baṇṭā kare, khelate siṅgh gobind pajāre | loth bichār bisathār ketā kaho, paun paravāh pat hot ḍāre | mār apār tih ṭhaur aisī bhaī, bhāj kai dūt sāre sidhāre |12|555|

As reapers in a field, so the Singhs made their work, laying the heads upon the ground; the sword their playing-stick and the head the ball — so Gobind's Singhs sport in the heroic idiom of the age. How much shall I tell of the spread of corpses — cast down like leaves upon the wind? Such boundless slaughter was there that all the foe fled away.

bhāj turakān maidān chhoḍe tabai, khet siṅghān ke hāth āyo | kiyo bichār karatār man mai ite, sāh ko bhed chāhijai sunāyo | dajā ko siṅgh tih sāj sīgār kai, khusī karatār karikai paṭhāyo | karī tasalīm tih hukam ko dekh kai, sīs pai bāndh tānte sidhāyo |13|556|

When the Turks fled and left the field, it came into the Singhs' hands. Then the Creator resolved in his mind: ‘The truth must be told to the emperor.’ He arrayed and adorned Bhai Daya Singh, and gladly sent him forth; and Daya Singh, bowing to that command, bound it reverently upon his head and set out.

Bhai Daya Singh Carries the Letter South

kahī samajhāi karatār tāhī samai, likhā oraṅge ke hāth dījai | sāth sahāi yo jān merā bachana, nāh man māh kachh saṅk kījai | tīn do pāñch lai khālase pās te, kharach darabār bīchār lījai | sāh pai jāi dar āi darabār mai, beg pharamān tayār kījai |14|557|

The Guru instructed him at that hour: ‘Give this letter into Aurangzeb's own hand. Know my word as your help and companion; keep no doubt in your mind. Take three, or two, or five of the Khalsa, and see to the court's expenses; go to the emperor, and at the door of his court have the reply quickly prepared.’

bidā bhayo tāhī samai, prabh ko sīs nivāi | ahidī bhes banāi kai, chalayo siṅgh tab dhāi |15|558|

He took his leave at that hour, bowing his head to the Lord; and, making the disguise of a royal messenger, the Singh set off at speed.

kiyo ahidīyan bhes began sidhāyo | tinai rāv gāvai bigārai bulāyo | kiyo kūch kete karī ailagāran | kite daras mai āi dillī majhāran |16|559|

In the messenger's disguise he went swiftly; the village chiefs would summon him to their forced labour, and he played along; he made many marches, some at forced pace, and in some days came into Delhi.

milī sādh saṅgat mahā sukh pāyo | hukam kāḍh kai tāh tāte bachāyo | likhe dām jete likhe tāh nāman | chale kūch kai kai kiyo eh kāman |17|560|

He met the holy sangat and found great joy; showing the order, he saved himself from the forced labour; he noted down whatever expenses were owed, and marching on, went about his task.

āe āgare kām kai kai sidhāe | lakhī chambalan chhoḍ guller dhāe | āe naravare kāl bāgan sirajainan | daī chhoḍikai soi āe ujainan |18|561|

He came to Agra, did his work and went on; he sighted the Chambal, and pressed on by Guler; he came to Narwar, Kalabagh and Sironj, and leaving them behind, arrived at Ujjain.

lakhī narabadā pār pai lai sidhāre | gae mālave ke mahā kos bhāre | gaṛ dekhiyan seran tāte padhāre | āe nāg burrhān purai majhāre |19|562|

He crossed the Narmada and went on beyond; through the great long stretches of Malwa he passed; he saw the fort of Shergarh, and journeyed thence, and came into the region of Burhanpur.

kiyo bāhanan as tāte sidhāyo | kiyo kūch auraṅgabādan su āyo | kiyo kām tāte tahā te sidhāyo | tabai lasakaran ahamadā nag āyo |20|563|

Taking a mount, he went on; he marched and came to Aurangabad; he did his work and left there; and then came to the imperial camp at Ahmadnagar.

samai sodaran bedaran siṅgh āyo | kinī gañj mai jeṭh siṅghan batāyo | rahe dhām tāke surainan bitāyo | bhaī bhor te dharam sāle sidhāyo |21|564|

In time the Singh came on to Bidar; in the ganj a resident showed him the way; he stayed at his house and passed the night, and at dawn went to the dharamsala.

siṅgh tāhī samai ān dacchhan disā, mel satisaṅg bīchār kīnā | kaho jih bhānt tih bhānt arajī karo, sāh ko likhā siṅgh gobind dīnā | bāk bichār bisathār ketā bhayo, bharam bhule jiven bedirīnā | hukam karatār kā mān kai khālase, prīt so āpane sīs līnā |22|565|

The Singh, come now to the southern region, took counsel with the sat-sangat: ‘In whatever way, make the petition thus — Guru Gobind Singh has sent his letter for the emperor.’ Much reasoning and delay there was, the courtiers lost in delusion like the faithless; but the Khalsa, accepting the Creator's command, took it lovingly upon their own heads.

man bach karam kar bhāvanī, at hit chit man lāi | nisadin sevā siṅgh kī, kare khālasā jāi |23|566|

In thought, word and deed, with devotion, with utmost love of heart and mind, day and night the Khalsa went and did the Guru's service.

māiā ke mad jo jan bhūle | aiṇḍe phirai hukam te bhūle | phīke bain kahai at bhārī | prabh kī kriā na naik bichārī |24|567|

Those men drunk on the wine of Maya, forgetting the [Guru's] command, strut about in arrogance; they speak insipid, overbearing words, and give not a moment's thought to the Lord's doings.

jih dis ghāt siṅgh kachh dhare | ihī upāv araj ko kare | tākī bhanak muṛ sun pāvai | tih dig jāi manai kar āvai |25|568|

In whatever quarter the Singh found some opening, by that means he tried to make the petition; but if the fool got the least whisper of it, he would go that way and forbid it.

anik upāv siṅgh ne kare | chhand bed kachh naik na sare | likhī kathā prabh pās paṭhāī | dayā karo im hohu sahāī |26|569|

Many devices the Singh tried; nothing at all availed. So he wrote the account and sent it to the Lord: ‘Show your grace; be our helper thus.’

dayā siṅgh aradāsa, likh bhejī prabh ko tabai | āpan kāj sudhāra, hui sahāi prabh jī ! abai |27|570|

Daya Singh then wrote and sent his ardas to the Lord: ‘Set your own work right; be our help now, O Lord!’

The Zafarnama Reaches Aurangzeb

jorī ek bulāi kai, kāsadā karā tayār | so paṭhae prabh pai tabai, ā pahuche darabār |28|571|

He summoned a courier and made ready the message; it was sent to the Lord, and reached the Guru's court.

prabh bāch aradās ko, pāñch hukam likh dīn | āpan kāj sudhārane, āp sahāi im kīn |29|572|

The Lord read the ardas, and wrote back his sacred order; setting his own work right, He thus became his own helper.

kāsad phir it te chale, te mārag mañjhār | ab līlā ut kī kaho, jo kīnī karatār |30|573|

The courier set off again upon the road; now I tell the play of that place, what the Creator wrought.

kābū ek siṅgh kar āyo | siṅgh sāth un bhed banāyo | tāh bichār araj im karī | varakī hāth sāh ke parī |31|574|

The Singh got hold of one man; with him he made a secret plan; through him he pressed the petition — and the paper fell into the emperor's own hand.

tā mai līlā likhī apārā | bhānt bhānt so sāh bichārā | tākī tanik bhanak im kahī | sarab kathā kī mit nahīn lahī |32|575|

In it a boundless account was written; the emperor pondered it in many ways. Only a little whisper of it I tell — the full account's measure cannot be grasped.

sāh oraṅg ko likhā yah bhānt son, chāhatā āp tuh pās āyo | kaul bikaul sabh log tere bhae, jaṅg ko bhed aise batāyo | rāv rāje ghane, ān ran mai tane, bhae hai anamane titan ghāyo | dekh kai chet bichār etā yahī, siṅgh tuh pās yāte paṭhāyo |33|576|

The letter to the emperor Aurangzeb ran thus: ‘You desired that I myself come to you; but all your people proved faithless, breakers of their word — so I tell you the truth of the war. Many chiefs and rajas came drawn into the battle, and were shaken and cut down, so many of them. Seeing this, take heed; consider only this much — I have sent a Singh to you for it.’

mahā bojh hai sīs pai jān tere | bhae kaul bikaul so log tere | likhā hai tujhai jān īmān saṅge | karoge kahā jīv karatār maṅge |34|577|

‘A great burden lies upon your soul, know it, for your people have become breakers of their word. It is written to you — take it with faith: what will you do, when the Creator demands the soul of all?’

sukhan marad ko jān mai jān rākhe | sukhan bosukhan aur kī aur bhākhe | dilo jān se kām ko jān kījai | karoge jarūrī nahīn ḍhīl dījai |35|578|

‘A man of honour keeps his word within his very soul; but they gave word and un-word, saying one thing and meaning another. With heart and soul understand this matter; do what is needful, and let there be no delay.’

ki asavār hajār so sāth āvai | bhalī phauj so siṅgh ḍaṅkā bajāvai | kiledār a phaujadāran apāre | sūbe jāt hai rāh kai bīch sāre |36|579|

‘Let a thousand horsemen come as escort, that the Singh may sound his drum with a goodly force; for countless fort-keepers, commanders and governors line all the road.’

jā pharamān ko tayār kai bhej dījai | likhā ṭhaur hī ṭhaur ko āp kījai | hukam sāh kā jo kabī hāth āvai | chale kūch kai kai yahī moh bhāvai |37|580|

‘Prepare and send a firman of safe-conduct, and set provision at every stage. Whenever the emperor's writ comes to hand, I would march — this alone pleases me.’

dekh bichār man māh etā kahayo, kaun sañjog karatār āvai | likhā kai dehu tākīd darabār mai, siṅgh tatakāl yā te sidhāvai | guraj baradār pharamān bhejā tabai, siṅgh gobind ke pās jāvai | jor kar benatī jāi aise kaho, raho tih ṭhaur jahā jīv āvai |38|581|

Reading and pondering it in his mind, the emperor said this much: ‘What arrangement might bring the Creator to come?’ ‘Have a firman written with urgency in the court, that the Singh may set off at once.’ Then he sent a firman by a mace-bearer, to go to Guru Gobind Singh: ‘Go and earnestly make the plea, saying: stay where you are until the host may come to you.’

gurajadār pharamān lai, dayā siṅgh kai saṅg | bidā kiyo tāhī samai, bādasāh oraṅg |39|582|

The mace-bearer, taking the firman, went with Daya Singh; and at that time the emperor Aurangzeb gave them leave to depart.

gurajadār ar siṅgh tāte sidhāe | likhe pāñch darabār te hukam āe | bhayo dhīrajan jīv mai sānt āī | hukam vār bīchār kai kai sunāī |40|583|

The mace-bearer and the Singh set off; the imperial writ came from the court, and patience arose, peace came to the soul; the order was read out with due deliberation.

The Guru's Word: On Hukam and the Refuge

birad bāne dī paij rakhadā āiā | hukamān de vich likh satigurān paṭhāiā | kachh na karo visavāsa, iu phuramāiā | suṇiā man santokha, bahut sukh pāiā | jī, nindak muṭṭhe roi, jinī janam gavāiā |41|584|

He has ever kept the honour of His own nature. In his commands the True Guru wrote and sent word: ‘Put no false trust in the emperor,’ so he charged them. Hearing it, the mind found contentment and won great peace; while the slanderers, robbed, weep — they who wasted their birth.

khās kalam karatāra, likhiā nā ḍaro | dayā siṅgh ke nāla, kamm sāmal karo | nimakh bilam nahīn hoi, kār aisī karo | satigur so kar prīti, duramat man te haro | jī, jug jug hoi sahāi, dhiān tin kā dharo |42|585|

In the Creator's own hand it was written: ‘Fear not. Join in the work with Daya Singh; delay not a moment, do the task so; make your love with the True Guru, and drive evil counsel from your mind. He is the helper age upon age — hold His meditation.’

suṇiā sukh samūha, dukkh gavāiā | binase sagal kalesa, bharam chukāiā | chintā phikar bisāra, iu phuramāiā: raho satasaṅg nisaṅgi, dukh lage na kāiā | jī, kar santan ko prīti, mel savāiā |43|586|

Hearing it, all comfort came and sorrow was gone; every strife perished and delusion was removed. Casting off worry and care, thus he charged them: ‘Stay fearless in the sat-sangat, and no sorrow shall touch the body.’ Loving the saints multiplies the union.

jo jan karasī kāra, hukam iu likhiā | tis dī pūran ghāla, pūrī dīkhiā | tis nūn sobh apāra, satigur ākhiā | jarā maran nahīn hoi, jam panth na pekhiā | jī, jo jan sadā hajūri, jugo jug rakhiā |44|587|

Whoever does this service — thus the order is written — his labour is fulfilled, his discipleship made whole; boundless glory the True Guru has declared for him. Neither old age nor death touches him; he never sees the path of Yama; that servant is ever in the Presence, kept through age upon age.

jo kahiā karatāra, kiu birathā jāvae | jo mannai so pravāna, iu hī bhāvae | sir sāhān de sāha, hukam manāvae | manne so jiṇ jāi, padavī pāvae | jī, gobind siṅgh dhiāi, tān baṇ āvae |45|588|

What the Creator has said — how can it go in vain? Whoever accepts it is approved; so alone it pleases Him. The Emperor over the head of emperors makes His command obeyed; who accepts it goes forth victorious and gains true rank. Meditate on Gobind Singh — then all comes right.

bachan sune karatār kā, jo ridai basāvai | man icchhe phal pāvae, jo kār kamāvai | mūrakh kabai na chetaī, man mai garabāvai | kāg kapūr tiāg kai, duragandh lubhāvai | jī, jo bhāvī aṅkūr hoi, so pragaṭ āvai |46|589|

Whoever hears the Creator's word and lodges it in his heart gains the fruit his mind desires, if he does the work. The fool never remembers, but grows proud in his mind; like the crow that forsakes camphor and craves the foul. Whatever sprout is fated comes at last to light.

ik nindak ik khālasā, karate iu bhāiā | jug jug khel varatadā, even hundā āiā | jis nūn rakhe rahai so, jin dhuron likhāiā | mūrakh ek na jāṇī, dūje bharamāiā | jī, jamapur badhe mārīani, phir pacchhotāiā |47|590|

One a slanderer, one the Khalsa — so it pleased the Creator; age upon age this play goes on; so it has ever been. Whom He keeps is kept, for whom it was written from the beginning; but the fool knows not the One, and is deluded by duality — bound, they are beaten in Yama's city, and then repent.

sat saṅgat vich baiṭh kai bole haṅkāre | bho sāir kiu laṅghasī, kiu utare pāre | kiu kar daragah sijhasī, kar dekh bichāre | lohā kañchan kiu thīe, bhāvai jiu jāre | jī, satigur pāras je milai, chhin mai nisatāre |48|591|

The arrogant, seated in the sat-sangat, speak: ‘How shall the terrible ocean be crossed? how reach the far shore? how be reckoned in the divine court? — consider and see. How can iron turn to gold, however you burn it?’ But if the True Guru, the touchstone, is met, in an instant he ferries one across.

at aparādhī je thīai, kul kī ghāt kare | khoṭo khoṭ kamāvaī, it mande amal kare | par nindā chorī kare, har jas nah uchare | bachan kare hit lāi, par dhan nit hare | jī, satigur chāhe bakhas kai, tih ko sādh kare |49|592|

However great a sinner one may be, though he slay his own kin; though the false one earn only falsehood and do base deeds; though he slander and steal and never chant the Lord's praise, speak with feigned love and forever rob others' wealth — yet if the True Guru wishes, forgiving, he can make even him a saint.

sabh terī tū sarabas dā, ko kidhar jāvai | put kuputī je kare, piu mukhahu na pāvai | bhāvai ketā bharamaṇā, je saraṇī āvai | auguṇ meṭe guṇ kare, bhī māh samāvai | jī, gobind siṅgh dayāl hai, satisaṅg milāvai |50|593|

All is Yours; You are the All-in-all — where else can one go? If a son turns wayward, the father casts him not from his sight; however far one has wandered, if he comes to the refuge, He effaces the faults and makes them virtue, and takes him into Himself. Gobind Singh is merciful — he joins one to the sat-sang.

jo kahiā karatāra, so ridai basāvaṇā | taj prapañch bikāra, nahī lalachāvaṇā | dūjā bhāv miṭāi, ikai dhiāvaṇā | charaṇ kamal so prīti, bharam chukāvaṇā | jī, bāndh pāñch hathiāra, darasan āvaṇā |51|594|

What the Creator has said — lodge it in your heart; forsaking deceit and vice, be not lured astray; wipe out the sense of duality, and meditate on the One; love the lotus-feet, and let delusion end — and, binding on the five weapons, come for darshan.

Here ends the thirteenth chapter of the book Sri Gur Sobha — the shining of the Guru's power, and how the command reached Aurangzeb. May it be complete; may it be blessed.
