Chapter 14

Chapter 14 · The March South, and the Battle of Baghaur

The Guru mounts in splendour for the long march south — a drum that shakes the three worlds. Through Rajputana comes the news that Aurangzeb has died; and at Baghaur, where the Guru went only to see an ancient Mahabharata field, the fearful townsfolk force a three-day battle he did not seek.

The March South Begins

bahut divas bītayo tahān, pragaṭ kaho bichār | dayā siṅgh it te chalayo, ut te sirajanahār |1|595|

Many days passed there; and openly [the Guru] spoke his mind: ‘Daya Singh has set off from here, and the Creator's word from there.’

dayā siṅgh dacchhan disā, lāgī bahut avār | siṅghan ko sāhib kahayo, sabhai hohu tayār |2|596|

Daya Singh was in the southern region, and much delay had passed. The Guru said to the Singhs: ‘Let all be ready.’

māravār ke rāha, dis dacchhan ko kūch hai | sabhai hohu tayāra, prabh im kahī sunāi kai |3|597|

‘By the road of Marwar the march is toward the south; let all be ready’ — so the Lord proclaimed.

bhae taiyār habajār pāñche kase, siṅgh tih ṭhaur ban beg āe | ek so ek balavant sūrā sarasa, ṭāṅk dui tīn āphū chaṛāe | dekh karatār tih or aise kahayo, anī ke jvān hai disaṭ āe | as bānī saras sāj sīgār ke, beg lai āv aise batāe |4|598|

Five thousand made ready and girded; the Singhs came swiftly, arrayed, to that place. Warrior upon mighty warrior, splendid — in the fashion of the soldiery of that age. Seeing them, the Creator said to them: ‘The young men of the army have come into sight. Array and adorn the fine, graceful horses, and bring them quickly’ — so he told.

The Guru Mounts for the March

turakī as acchh supacchh baḍe, tih ūpar pākharan ān dharī | chhab sohat jīn jarāin kī, sabh sāj samet anūp dharī | gaj motin ke gul bandan ke, kalagī sir sobh jarāvai jarī | barano chhab jo jal chāl chalai, chhip hai tih dekhat hūr parī |5|599|

A Turkish steed, splendid, well-formed and great; upon it the barding was laid; the beauty of the jewelled saddle shone, all arrayed and matchless. Garlands of great pearls at its neck, and on its head the jewel-set plume-crest. I describe its beauty as it moves like flowing water — the houri and fairy hide themselves, beholding it.

chañchal chapal chalāk hai, ar gat anik apār | baran chihan sundar sarasa, rūp diyo karatār |6|600|

Nimble, swift and clever, of countless boundless gaits; of fair colour and marking, splendid — such a form the Creator gave it.

aradās kīnī aradāsiyai, sunijai, kripā dhār | at sundar bānī sarasa, bhayo as tayār |7|601|

The petitioner made his ardas: ‘Hear, and show your grace: the exceedingly beautiful, graceful horse is made ready.’

tāh samai prabh ne isanān kiyo kar kai hathiār sambhāre | lai tin ko isanān diyo, kar āp agochhan pochh sudhāre | kāḍh tinai chamakāi chahu disa, miānan mai jab hī niravāre | khel apār kare karatāra, jan jīv kahā gat tāh bichāre |8|602|

At that time the Lord bathed, and took up his weapons; he had the horses bathed too, and himself wiped them clean with cloths. Drawing out his blades, flashing them on all four sides, when he cleared them from their scabbards — the Creator makes his boundless play; what can a mere creature comprehend of his state?

tosakachī tāhī samai, basat sabhai kar kīn | āge satigur ke dhare, pahar tabai sabh līn |9|603|

The keeper of the wardrobe at that time brought all the things and set them before the True Guru; and all were taken up within a watch.

sīs pai tāj lai son kalagī dharī, lāl hīre jarī jagamagāvai | hīr pannā khare, or motī jare, jhalak chhab sobh tākī suhāvai | jhok aise lasai, jot ḍhundan disai, sobh apār nahī baran āvai | pragaṭ pūraṇḍh tūī lok sobhā karai, pekh tih sant sukh sarab pāvai |10|604|

On his head he set the crown with its golden plume-crest, gleaming, studded with rubies and diamonds; diamonds and emeralds set, and pearls; the shimmer of that beauty is lovely, such radiance shining that a searching light seems seen — a glory boundless, past describing. Manifest and all-pervading, You alone make the world's splendour; beholding him, all the saints find every joy.

chilatā kar kai sabh sāj hī son, barano hathiār kaho sabh hī | kaṭ so taravār banī jam dhāra, alī band ḍhāl phabai jab hī | dis dāhan bān kamān sajai, kar mai barachhā chamakai ab hī | sabh dūtan chhār karai chhin mai, kah gobind siṅgh chaṛe tab hī |11|605|

The chain-mail donned with all its trappings — I tell of all his arms: at the waist the sword like Yama's edge; the shield with its rim adorned; on the right side bow and arrow arrayed; the spear flashing now in his hand. ‘He will make ashes of all the foe in a moment’ — saying this, Guru Gobind Singh then mounted.

vāhagurū jī kī phate, kah kai bhae savār | bhayo ḍaṅk tihu lok mai, chaṛat karī karatār |12|606|

Crying ‘Waheguru ji ki Fateh!’ he mounted; a war-drum sounded through the three worlds as the Creator made his mounting.

ḍaṅkan ghor su ghor bhaī, sun kai purīā sabh hī larajī | laraje sas bhān bhayān bhae, kih kāran kāj chaṛayo har jī | tuī lok alok sabhai laraje, siv jī kailās palayo tar jī | sun ses mahes sures baḍe, laraje siṅgh gobind ke ḍar jī |13|607|

The drums thundered terribly; hearing them, all the cities trembled. The moon and sun trembled in dread: ‘For what cause has the Lord Hari mounted?’ All the worlds and the unseen realms trembled; Shiva's Kailash toppled beneath. Hear — Sheshnag, Mahesh and the great Indra trembled at the fear of Guru Gobind.

bhae bhaimān pātār ākāsa, kahayo karatār dis dacchh āno | kaun kāran prabh pher dacchhan disā bhae hain savār kaise ki māno | sidh sādhak sabhe bhae bhaimāna, ab kaun kī kān gur kī nasāno | ḍaṅk kī ghor sun lok kampī, chaṛe siṅgh gobind aise bakhāno |14|608|

The nether-world and the sky grew fearful; the Creator said, ‘come to the southern quarter.’ ‘For what cause has the Lord mounted again toward the south — how are we to understand it?’ The siddhas and seekers all grew afraid: ‘Whose reckoning can stand now? — the Guru's mark spreads wide.’ Hearing the thunder of the drum the world quaked — so is Guru Gobind Singh's mounting told.

Through Rajputana, and the News of Aurangzeb's Death

karat kūch āe tahān, rajapūtan ke des | ān rājā mile, jodhā baḍe nares |15|609|

Marching on, they came to the land of the Rajputs; a raja came and met him — a great warrior-king.

siṅghan sikhan man mai ānī | un ucharī prabh so im bānī | hohu dayāl biāh prabh karo | tau ih mag pag āge dharo |16|610|

The Singhs and Sikhs took it to mind, and spoke this word to the Lord: ‘Be gracious, O Lord — hold the marriage; then set your foot forward on this road.’

sunat bachan bigās son, prabh sabh sāmā kīn | hukam sikhan ko kiyo, maṅgavāi sabh kachh līn | sāj sāmāne sabhai ānand tūr bajāi | biāh kar kai āpanā, prabh chale tāte dhāi |17|611|

Hearing the word, with delight the Lord made all ready; he ordered the Sikhs and had everything brought; all the trappings, sounding the trumpet of bliss. Performing the marriage, the Lord then marched swiftly on.

dayā siṅgh tāhī disā, milā prabh so āi | gurajadār dilī gayo, vah us rāh na jāi |18|612|

In that region Daya Singh came and met the Lord; while the mace-bearer went off to Delhi, not travelling by that road.

jih gāvan khālasā pare, lūṭ kūṭ tih let | gāv bache rājā mile, bheṭ prabh so det |19|613|

Whatever villages the Khalsa fell upon, they took by force; but the villages that met the Lord, their rajas came and gave tribute.

jo rājā kar jor kai, milat prabh so dhāi | bas hai des anand son, tān dig koi na jāi |20|614|

The raja who came with hands joined and met the Lord — his land dwells in bliss, and toward it no one goes to raid.

jo man mai garabit rahe, milanā un nahī kīn | lūṭ kūṭ kai khālase, bhūñch tāh kau līn |21|615|

Those who stayed proud in mind and did not come to meet — the Khalsa took their lands by force.

kūch karat mārag chalata, ihī bhānt so jāt | āge ko mārag nahī, sunī prabh im bāt |22|616|

Marching, going along the road in this way; ‘there is no road ahead,’ the Lord heard it said.

vah dis chhoṛ avar dis dhāe | kūch karat ketak iv āe | chaṛ ghāṭī ke pār sidhāne | prabh so bāt kahī ik āne |23|617|

Leaving that direction, they hastened another way; marching, they came on; climbing over a pass they went beyond; and someone came and told the Lord a thing:

auraṅg shāh gaun kar gayo | jag te bidā bhānt yah bhayo | chhoḍ gayo sabh mulak khajānā | kāl gusayo bal kachh na basānā |24|618|

‘Emperor Aurangzeb has passed away; thus he took his leave of the world. He left behind all his realm and treasure; Death seized him, and no strength availed.’

kūch kiyo prabh ne tabai, lai ghoran ko saṅg | bhānt anekan dekhiyai, jā sulatānī jaṅg |25|619|

The Lord then marched on, taking the horses along; many things were to be seen — amid the imperial war of succession.

ketak din prabh aur bitāe | kūch mukām karat chal āe | birachh ek dīragh at ghanā | sundar sar sarūp tih banā |26|620|

The Lord passed some more days; marching and halting, they came on; there stood one tree, very tall and dense, and a lovely tank of fair form beside it.

At Baghaur: the Guru Comes in Peace

adhik ṭhaur dekhī tahān, hui hai tahān na dhām | utar rahe tāhī thale, kīne tahān mukām |27|621|

They saw a fine place there, though no dwelling stood; they halted at that spot and made their camp.

kīchak bhūm dekhan nimita, gae prabh tih ṭhaur | ān pahuche tāh disa, nikaṭ sahar bāghaur |28|622|

To see the Kichak-land — the old Mahabharata field — the Lord went to that place, and came into that region, near the town of Baghaur.

sahar bāghaur āp je āe | log tahān ke at ḍar pāe | tinahu karī juddh kī sāmā | kabahu lūṭ leh e dāmā |29|623|

When he himself came near the town of Baghaur, its people were greatly afraid; they made ready for battle: ‘lest these plunder and take our wealth.’

at apār jin phauj nihārī | surabīr jodhā hitakārī | kar sāmān des ih āe | in ke bhed jāt nahī pāe |30|624|

Seeing that vast host of brave and loyal warriors: ‘They have come into this land making preparations; their purpose cannot be known.’

gah gah sasat basat gah gāḍhe | kar sāmān juddh ko ṭhāḍhe | pūchhan ko ik paṭhiyo bārī | pūchhe ine jāi bidh sārī |31|625|

Gripping their weapons and their goods, standing firm, they made ready for battle; and they sent one man to inquire, to go and ask the whole matter.

chal āyo vah prabh ke dhāmā | doi kar jor kiyo pranāmā | pūchhī bāt prabh pah jāe | kavan bhūm te yā dis āe ? |32|626|

He came to the Lord's camp, and with hands joined made obeisance; going up to the Lord, he asked: ‘From what land, and to which quarter, have you come?’

nagar log man mai at ḍar hī | ih bidh araj prabh so kar hī | ḍerā nikaṭ sahar ke dae | lūṭan kāj ān ṭhaharae |33|627|

The townsfolk, greatly afraid in their hearts, made this plea to the Lord: ‘You have camped near our town — have you come to stay in order to plunder?’

dharam siṅgh prabh tahān paṭhāyo | bārī siṅgh tāh lai āyo | gurū pīr tāke ghar jāī | sarab kathā ih bhānt batāī |34|628|

The Lord sent Bhai Dharam Singh there; Bhai Bari Singh brought the messenger; the Guru-Pir's men went to his house and told the whole matter thus:

kīchak juddh ṭhaur tih bhayo | dekhan tāh āp prabh ayo | tum man mai kachh saṅk na āno | hamarī bāt sat kar jāno |35|629|

‘The Kichak battle happened at that spot; the Lord himself has come to see it. Bring no doubt into your minds; know our word as true.’

tāte tin na sānt man āī | in kī bāt un na man bhāī | dharam siṅgh prabh pai tab āe | aur ṭhaur ḍerā phuramāe |36|630|

Yet no peace came to their minds; their word did not please them. Dharam Singh then came back to the Lord, and the Guru ordered the camp moved to another place.

lakarī ghās nīr tahān ghanā | bāgā ajāib adabhut banā | tih dig utar kiyo bisrāmā | gobind siṅgh gur tih nāmā |37|631|

There was wood, grass and water in plenty, and a wondrous, marvellous garden; in that quarter he halted and took his rest — Guru Gobind Singh, that was his name.

The Battle of Baghaur

tā ko log milan je āe | tinan inām prabh phuramāe | tin ke saṅg tāh je gae | kīchak juddh bhīm so bhae |38|632|

Those who came to meet him, the Lord rewarded; and with them he went to see [the field] where the Kichak battle was fought by Bhima.

barakanadāza saṅg prabh lae | or siṅgh prabh saṅg na gae | jin ke nām prabh phuramāe | teī siṅgh sāth ko dhāe |39|633|

The Lord took only his musketeers with him; the other Singhs did not go along; only those the Guru named went with him.

kos ek ūche chaṛ āe | dekhī ṭhāv tabai phuramāe | ve jo siṅgh sāth lai āne | ṭhaur ṭhaur kīne prabh thāne |40|634|

They climbed up a height of one kos; the Lord saw the place and gave his orders; the Singhs he had brought along he posted at various spots.

siṅghan ṭhaur bāṇṭ im daī | āp bāṭ ḍeran kī laī | ketak din tih ṭhaur bihāne | uṭh rukh bāgan ke khāne |41|635|

He apportioned the places among the Singhs, and himself took a portion for the camp. Some days passed at that spot; and the horses rose and ate the trees of the gardens.

mālī bhāj rāv pai ae | sagare rukh bāg ke gae | bhojan het uṭh je āe | tor tor sabh hī un khāe |42|636|

The gardener fled to the raja: ‘All the trees of the garden are gone; the beasts rose and came for food, and broke and ate them all.’

sunat bachan man māh risāne | kop bhare at hī garabāne | kūp prabh so kachh nāh basānī | man mai rākh bāt im ṭhānī |43|637|

Hearing the word, the raja was angered in mind, filled with wrath and pride; nothing at all availed against the Lord, yet he resolved thus in his heart.

siṅgh ek kihī kāj sidhāyo | tin ke des māh vah āyo | tanik manak tin so bhaī rārā | juddh bhayo tin hu saṅg bhārā |44|638|

One Singh had gone off on some errand and came into their land; a small quarrel of pride arose with them, and a heavy fight broke out.

kop siṅgh bhagavatī nikārī | ketak dūt hane balakārī | juddh het sabh siṅgh nihāre | gah gah sasat uṭhe lalakāre |45|639|

In wrath the Singh drew his sword — the Bhagvati — and slew several foes with might; all the Singhs saw that battle was joined, and gripping their weapons rose with war-cries.

baiṭhe siṅgh pahār pai, dekhayo juddh nihār | daī palītī tino ne, hui gae log sabhār |46|640|

The Singhs seated on the height watched the battle; the foe lit the fuses of their cannon, and the people gathered in force.

kop bhayo man mai tabai, nikase sūr risāi | raṇ maṇḍan jodhā chale, nimakh bilam nahīn lāi |47|641|

Then wrath rose in [the Singhs'] minds, and the warriors sallied out in fury; the warriors went to array the battle, delaying not a moment.

kop kai sūr jo jāi burajo chaṛai, kiyo saṅgrām ghamasān bhārī | chale tīr gambhīr bandūk chhuṭai ghanī, ān lāgī anī yo bichārī | garaj ghan jo karī, laraj aisī parī, kop kai top chhorī su sārī | paṛū pūran bharan ān jogan arī, ḍākinī chāvaḍī chītakārī |48|642|

The wrathful warriors went and climbed the bastion, and made a fierce, terrible battle; grave arrows flew and the guns fired thick, and the spear-point came and struck home. The cannon thundered like clouds, and such trembling fell; in wrath they loosed all the cannon; the yoginis came to fill their skulls, and the dakinis and chamundas shrieked.

sūr sūr kī or nihāre | pakarai sasat tāh chun mārai | jiu bhuyaṅgā aṅg koū gusai | taise sasat sūr ko ḍasai |49|643|

Warrior faces warrior; gripping their weapons, they pick and slay; as a serpent bites some limb, so the weapon bites the warrior.

tanik manak man mai nahīn rahai | jih tan vār sūr ko bahai | lāgai vār sūr tih kārī | bhūl deh greh sudh sārī |50|644|

Not a trace of fear remains in the heart of him on whose body the warrior's blow falls; the deadly stroke strikes home, and he forgets body, home, all sense.

pare bhūm kaparā jim ḍāre | raṅg raṅg raṅgarej sudhāre | aisī bhānt sūr tahān pare | doi rāt ar dui din lare |51|645|

They fell to the ground like cast-off cloth, and the dyer dyed them colour upon colour. In this way the warriors fell there; two nights and two days they fought.

jab tīsar din āio, tab prabh kahī sunāi | dharam siṅgh ! tum jo karo, dehu darerā jāi |52|646|

When the third day came, the Lord proclaimed: ‘Dharam Singh! do as you will — go and make a crushing charge.’

dharam siṅgh dhāyo tabai, lae siṅgh lalakār | daravāje ḍhuke sabhe, karat mār hī mār |53|647|

Dharam Singh then charged, taking the Singhs with a war-cry; they closed on all the gates, crying ‘strike, strike.’

sasat sambhār lalakār siṅghān kī, garaj kai sūr aise sidhāe | ān devār tin laṅg gāḍh kī laī, kiyo ghamasān ketān ghāe | mār apār hathiār bhārī bhae, sūr pai sūr gir kām āe | chhoḍ kai paur kī ṭhaur aise gae, siṅgh chal paur kī ṭhaur āe |54|648|

Gripping their weapons, with the Singhs' war-cry, the warriors roared and set forth; they firmly scaled the wall, and made a fierce slaughter, killing many; boundless slaughter with heavy weapons, warrior falling on warrior and slain. The foe left the gate-post and fled, and the Singhs advanced and reached the gate.

daravāje āe tabai, siṅgh sabhai khunasāi | masalat kai aise kiyo, dīnī āg lagāi |55|649|

The Singhs came to the gates, all in fury; taking counsel, they set fire to them.

jal bal bhayo aṅgāra, daravājā ṭūṭe tabai | siṅgh sabhai ik sāra, andar ko dhāe jabai |56|650|

The gate burned to coals and then broke; and all the Singhs, as one, charged inside.

Baghaur Falls; the Guru Marches On

tor kai paur jabai siṅgh āge gae, sāmuhe sūr lalakār āe | gahe taravār lalakār aise pare, jān darīāu jo umaḍ āe | sūr ar siṅgh mil juddh aise bhayo, loh luhār jaise bajāe | choṭ pai choṭ ar oṭ karatār kī, sār kī bār mai siṅgh dhāe |57|651|

When the Singhs broke the gate and went forward, warriors came against them with war-cries; gripping swords they fell with cries, like a river come surging in flood. Warrior and Singh clashed so, as the smith beats iron; blow upon blow, and under the Creator's shelter, the Singhs charged into the hail of steel.

mil sūran sū ran im kīnā | tan man arap prān kar dīnā | tan apane ko lobh na jānā | bhire sūr yodhā balavānā |58|652|

The warriors made such war, offering body and mind and giving up their lives; they knew no love for their own bodies; the mighty warriors clashed.

gah gah bhujā bhujan te lehī | sīs phirāi ḍār kai dehī | jo dhubīā paṭ pai paṭ ḍāre | taise sūr sūr ko māre |59|653|

They grip arm against arm and wrestle; whirling the head, they cast it from the body; as the washerman dashes cloth on cloth, so warrior slays warrior.

parī loth pai loth apārā | gire pakharīā vār na pārā | lai lai sūr prem ke pajāle | pī pī magan bhae matavāle |60|654|

Corpse fell upon boundless corpse; the mailed horsemen fell past reckoning. The warriors take up the cups of love, and drinking, drinking, are lost and drunk with it.

bahut sūr māre tahān, bhāje anik apār | dūje daravāje gae siṅgh sabhai ik sār |61|655|

Many warriors were slain there, and many past number fled; then all the Singhs, as one, went to the second gate.

dhāi pare tā mai sabhai, dīne dūt bhagāi | tīje daravāje ara, siṅgh sūr khunasāi |62|656|

They charged into it, all of them, and drove off the foe; and to the third gate, the Singh-warriors, in fury.

tā mai ghamaṇḍ rahe balavānā | naik na mānat tin kī ānā | ek siṅgh prabh pai chal āyo | ān tāh tah bhed batāyo |63|657|

Within, the mighty held out in arrogance, heeding the Singhs' coming not a whit. One Singh came to the Lord and told him the secret:

ek siṅgh prabh so kahayo, vah jo adhik pahār | top jāi tā pai chaṛe, bhāje bharam gavār |64|658|

One Singh said to the Lord: ‘There is that great height; set the cannon and climb it, and the deluded fools will flee.’

jabar jaṅg prabh ne laī, tā asathān chaṛāi | ketak choṭan ke chalata, dīne dūt bhagāi |65|659|

The Lord had the great cannon Zabar Jang raised to that place; and with a few shots, the foe was put to flight.

tījī paur par siṅgh jo dhāe | jo kachh hāth lagā so lajāe | prabh so ān kahī im bātā | gaṛ dekhau chal purakh bidātā |66|660|

When the Singhs charged the third gate, whatever came to hand they carried off; and they came and told the Lord: ‘Come and see the fort, O Being, O Creator.’

sunat bachan prabh adhik risāyo | tāh samai man mai im āyo | avar bichār kachh nahī kīnā | bhae savār kūch kar dīnā |67|661|

Hearing the word, the Lord was much displeased; at that time this came into his mind; he made no other reckoning, but mounted and gave the order to march.

kūch kiyo sāhib chal āe | parī bahīr siṅgh sabh dhāe | khabar kūch kī un sun pāī | daurī phauj pher chal āī |68|662|

The Lord marched and came on; the baggage-train moved, and all the Singhs hastened. The foe got word of the march, and their army came running in pursuit again.

siṅgh pichhārī mai rahe, āī phauj apār | juddh bhayo jujjhe kite, ghāil bhae apār |69|663|

The Singhs were in the rear; a vast army came; a battle broke out, many fought, and many were wounded.

juddh karat jodhā sabhai, chal āe tih thān | āp prabh ṭhāḍhe tahā, jahā pahūche ān |70|664|

All the warriors, fighting, came to that place; and the Lord himself stood there, where they had arrived.

dui rājā jodhā balī, bhae muhabal ān | gah kamān sar sāndhayo, satigur purakh sujān |71|665|

Two mighty warrior-rajas came to confront him; gripping the bow, the wise Being, the True Guru, drew his arrow.

tānh samai aise kahayo, dharam siṅgh ! chal āv | ek rāv han ho abai, dusar pai tum jāv |72|666|

At that time he said: ‘Dharam Singh! come — I will strike down one raja now; you go for the other.’

siṅgh jo bhabhak kai lapak aisī karī, beg hī rāv ke pās dhāyo | rāv ik vār kīne na kīno gahī, siṅgh taravār ik vār lāyo | ghāv kārī bhayo, sron tan te gayo, hos bhulī sabhai bhūm āyo | kāṭ kai sīs tih beg hī lai liyo, dusaro rāv man mai risāyo |73|667|

The Singh, roaring, sprang and did so, rushing swiftly upon the raja; the raja could land no blow, while the Singh landed a single sword-stroke. A deadly wound was made, blood poured from the body, all sense lost, and he fell to the earth; swiftly the Singh took his head — and the second raja was kindled with wrath.

pakar kai sasat sambhār tā pai pare, chāhato vār tih or pāyo | āp sambhār sar sādh tāhī samai, aiñch kai tīr aise chalāyo | tor hiy ko gayo, pār paile bhayo, jujh kai rāv suragai sidhāyo | bhāj kai phauj bāghor daurī gaī, siṅgh gobind ḍaṅkā bajāyo |74|668|

Gripping his weapon, he fell upon [the Guru], seeking to land a blow that way; but the Guru himself, steadying, aimed the arrow at that moment, and drawing, loosed it so; it broke through his heart and passed out the far side, and the raja, fighting, went to heaven. The Baghaur army fled running, and Guru Gobind Singh sounded the victory-drum.

chalī phauj bāghor ko, mār lae siradār | kūch jahānābād ko, kar dīno karatār |75|669|

The Baghaur army fled, their chieftain slain; and the Creator, the Guru, made his march toward Jahanabad, toward Delhi.

shāh jahānābād ko, kīno kūch apār | kathā sāh ke gaun kī, karat tās bīchār |76|670|

He made a great march toward Shahjahanabad; and now the poet takes up the account of the emperor Aurangzeb's passing.

Here ends the fourteenth chapter of the book Sri Gur Sobha — the seeing of the Kichak-land and the telling of the battle of Baghaur. May it be complete; may it be blessed.
