Aurangzeb's Death at Ahmadnagar
dis dacchhan ahimad nagarā, ajab ajāib thān | karam kām tā dis rahayo, nauraṅg sāh sujān |1|671|
In the southern region lay Ahmadnagar, a wondrous, marvellous place; and there the affairs of the shrewd emperor Aurangzeb were bound.
ahimad nagar ajab ik thānān | nauraṅg sāh tahān ṭhaharāno | terah mās tāh bhua rahayo | pāyo kāl kāl bas bhayo |2|672|
Ahmadnagar, a wondrous place; there the emperor Aurangzeb halted; thirteen months he dwelt in that land — then Death found him, and he came under Death's power.
saharan sahar dhum par gaī | bhārī bāt anik bidh bhaī | anik ṭhaur ih bhānt luṭānī | rāj birājī sabhahan jānī |3|673|
From city to city the news resounded; grave things came to pass in a hundred ways; many places were plundered in this manner; and all knew the throne stood empty.
The War of Succession; the Guru Blesses Bahadur Shah
sunī khabar ājam chal āyo | sabh lasakar un ān bachāyo | sīs āpane chhat jhulānā | pherī dis dacchhan mai ānā |4|674|
Prince Azam heard the news and came; he gathered all the army to himself; he waved the royal canopy over his own head, and turned about toward the southern quarter.
tab ājam baiṭho takhata, man mai harakh baḍhāi | kar sāmā saṅgrām kī, chalayo bilam nahīn lāi |5|675|
Then Azam sat upon the throne, joy rising in his heart; making ready for war, he marched without delay.
jab te nauraṅg sāh sidhānā | ājam rāj āpano jānā | chhat āpane sīs jhulāyo | ḍaṅkā det hind ko āyo |6|676|
When Aurangzeb had passed away, Azam took the kingdom to be his own; he waved the canopy over his head, and, sounding the drum, came toward Hindustan.
tākī khabar sāh sun pāī | kūch kiyo kachh binam na lāī | dillī nikaṭ āp jab āyo | likhā kiyo prabh pās paṭhāyo |7|677|
Bahadur Shah heard word of it, and marched without any delay; and when he himself came near Delhi, he wrote a letter and sent it to the Lord — to Guru Gobind Singh.
kar jore aise kahayo, nimakh bilam nahīn lāi | ih sulatānī jaṅg mai, tum prabh hohu sahāi |8|678|
With hands joined he wrote: ‘Delay not a moment; in this imperial war, be my help, O Lord.’
teī bāt prabh ne sun pāī | likhayo dilāsā tāh paṭhāī | saṅkā naik jīv nahīn āno | nihachai rāj āpanā jāno |9|679|
The Lord heard the matter, and wrote back his reassurance: ‘Bring not the least doubt into your heart; know the kingdom, for certain, as your own.’
tāte sānt sāh man āī | kar nihache prabh so liv lāī | ān jājau juddh machāyo | ājam mārag jāt na pāyo |10|680|
At this, peace came to the emperor's mind; with faith he fixed his love on the Lord. Coming to Jajau, the battle was joined; and Azam could not get away upon the road.
bajo sār pai sār apārā | kīne prabal sabal raṇ bhārā | prabal kathā kar alap sunāī | ājam mīch bhāi ih āī |11|681|
Steel rang on boundless steel; a mighty, powerful, heavy battle was fought. I tell the great tale in brief: in this way came Azam's death.
Bahadur Shah's Victory and Accession
chaṛe dal sāj pai lāj nainā bhare, sāh ājam are jor kīne | bhire mahamant balavant sūrā sarasa, ek te ek koū nahīn hīne | parī hai mār siradār jujhe ghane, gire sulatān jab ḍagamagīne | rāj ke kāj saṅgrām bhārath kiyo, loh kī lāj pai jīv dīno |12|682|
The armies rode out arrayed; and Azam Shah, his eyes brimming for honour, stood firm with all his force. Mighty warrior clashed with mighty warrior, none the lesser of the two; heavy slaughter fell, chieftain upon chieftain fought and died; and when the sultan fell, his host reeled. For the sake of the throne he made a war like the Mahabharata, and gave his life for the honour of the sword.
sānī ājam sāh kī, avar nahī sulatān | loh lāj jin raṇ vikhe, aisī karī nidān |13|683|
There was no other sultan to rival Azam Shah, who in the field, for the honour of the sword, met such an end at the last.
jujh mare raṇ mo tabai, sutan sahit im jān | aisī kinahu nā karī, jānat sakal jahān |14|684|
He fought and fell in the field then, together with his sons, know it so; such a stand none other made — the whole world knows it.
sunī jo sāh bigasāi aise kahayo, sukar daragāh terī alāhī | kiyo hai phaij muh āpano jān kai, rahim kī najar te phate pāyī | bīr jodhā balī, dhāṅk jā kī bhalī, saṅg the khub jā ke sipāhī | jīv tā kā liyo, tāj ham ko diyo, ajab hai khel tere khudāī |15|685|
Hearing of the victory, Bahadur Shah rejoiced and said: ‘Thanks be to Your court, O God! You have shown me Your bounty, counting me Your own; by Your merciful glance I won the day. That brave and mighty warrior, whose fame ran fair, who had fine soldiers at his side — You took his life, and gave the crown to me; wondrous is Your play, O Lord of all.’
sukar kiyo daragāh mai, juddh phate jab kīn | chhat sīs apane tabai, sāh bahādur līn |16|686|
He gave thanks in [God's] court when he had won the battle; and then Bahadur Shah took the canopy over his own head.
sāh bahādar chhat jhulānā | pherī des des mai ānā | kiyo mukām āgare māhīn | chār mās barasāt bitāī |17|687|
Bahadur Shah waved the imperial canopy, and his rule spread through land after land; he made his camp at Agra, and passed there the four months of the rains.
bādasāh dig āgare, rahit tāh bīchār | shāh jahānābād mai, ā pahuñchayo karatār |18|688|
While the emperor was in the region of Agra, the Guru — pondering that — came and reached Shahjahanabad, the city of Delhi.
