The Sangat Goes Out to Receive the Guru
ਦਿੱਲੀ ਨਿਕਟ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਬ ਆਏ । ਸੰਗਤਿ ਖਬਰਿ ਸੁਨੀ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਏ । ਅਨਿਕ ਹੁਲਾਸ ਜੀਵ ਮੈ ਆਯੋ । ਸਰਬ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਲੈਨਿ ਸਿਧਾਯੋ ॥੧॥੬੮੯॥
dillī nikaṭ prabh jab āe | saṅgat khabar sunī sukh pāe | anik hulās jīv mai āyo | sarab khālasā lain sidhāyo |1|689|
When the Lord came near Delhi, the sangat heard the news and found joy; boundless delight rose in their souls, and all the Khalsa set out to receive him.
ਗਾਡੀ ਰਥ ਕੇਤਨ ਮੰਗਵਾਏ । ਘੋਰਨ ਪੈ ਚੜਿ ਅਨਿਕ ਸਿਧਾਏ । ਪਾਜ ਪਯਾਦਨ ਕੇਤਕ ਚਾਲੇ । ਪੀ ਪੀ ਨੈਨ ਪਾਨ ਕੇ ਪਿਆਲੇ ॥੨॥੬੯੦॥
gāḍī rath ketan maṅgavāe | ghoran pai chaṛ anik sidhāe | pāj payādan ketak chāle | pī pī nain pān ke piāle |2|690|
Carriages and chariots were called for in number; many rode out on horseback; some went on foot — and all drank, and drank again, through their eyes the cups of his darshan.
ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਬਿਚਾਰੁ । ਸਿਖੰ ਅਪਾਰੁ । ਸਬਦੰ ਉਚਾਰੁ । ਏਕੋ ਨਿਹਾਰ ॥੩॥੬੯੧॥

Reflecting deeply, the countless Sikhs uttered the Word, beholding the One.
ਭਵ ਭੈ ਉਤਾਰੁ । ਭਰਮੰ ਬਿਦਾਰੁ । ਹੁਇ ਹਰਖਵੰਤੁ । ਪੇਖਯੋ ਬਿਅੰਤ ॥੪॥੬੯੨॥

Casting off the fear of existence, shattering delusion, filled with gladness, they beheld the Infinite.
ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਿਸਾਰੁ । ਦਿੜ ਜੀਵ ਧਾਰੁ । ਮਨ ਮੈ ਅਨੰਦ । ਸਭ ਤੋਰਿ ਫੰਦ ॥੫॥੬੯੩॥

Forgetting their care, holding the soul firm, bliss in the mind, every noose of bondage broken.
ਹੁਇ ਕੈ ਖਲਾਸ । ਮਨ ਪੂਰਿ ਆਸ । ਚਰਨੰ ਨਿਵਾਸ । ਦਾਸਾਨ ਦਾਸ ॥੬॥੬੯੪॥

Set free, their heart's hope fulfilled, they dwelt at his feet — servants of his servants.
ਮਨ ਬਚ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਵਨੀ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੋ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ । ਅਨੰਦ ਭਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਸਿਖਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਆਇ ॥੭॥੬੯੫॥
man bach kram kar bhāvanī, satigur so liv lāi | anand bhayo prabh pekhio sikhan satigur āi |7|695|
Devoted in thought, word, and deed, they fixed their love upon the True Guru; bliss arose as the Sikhs beheld the Lord — for the True Guru had come.
At Shahjahanabad, Then On to Mathura and Vrindavan
ਸਾਹ ਜਹਾਨਾਬਾਦ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਬ ਆਇ ਕੈ । ਕੋਤਕ ਕਰੇ ਅਪਾਰ, ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਿਗਸਾਇ ਕੈ । ਜਮਨਾ ਕੇ ਤਟ ਪਾਰ, ਜਹਾਂ ਡੇਰਾ ਕਿਜੈ । ਜੀ, ਕੌਨੇ ਸਿਸਟਿ ਉਧਾਰ, ਦਰਸ ਐਸੇ ਦਿਜੈ ॥੮॥੬੯੬॥
sāh jahānābād prabh jab āi kai | kotak kare apāra, prabh bigasāi kai | jamanā ke taṭ pāra, jahān ḍerā kijai | jī, kaune sisaṭ udhāra, daras aise dijai |8|696|
When the Lord came to Shahjahanabad, he worked boundless wonders in his joy, and across the bank of the Yamuna he made his camp. ‘O, what saviour of the world gives such a darshan as this!’
ਕੇਤਕ ਦਿਨ ਤਿਹ ਠਉਰ ਬਿਤਾਏ । ਫੇਰ ਕੂਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨੇ ਫੁਰਮਾਏ । ਚਲਤ ਚਲਤ ਆਏ ਤਿਹ ਥਾਨਾ । ਮਥੁਰਾ ਨਗਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਨਾ ॥੯॥੬੯੭॥
ketak din tih ṭhaur bitāe | pher kūch prabh ne phuramāe | chalat chalat āe tih thānā | mathurā nagar prabh man bhānā |9|697|
He passed some days in that place, then the Lord ordered the march onward; travelling on and on they came at last to that spot — the city of Mathura, pleasing to the Lord's mind.
ਦੇਖੀ ਠਵਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਿਗਸਾਏ । ਸੂਰਜ ਕੁੰਡ ਧਾਮ ਫੁਰਮਾਏ । ਤਬ ਬਿਸਰਾਂਤ ਦਿਸਟਿ ਤਰ ਆਨਾ । ਕੇਤਕ ਦੀਓ ਦਿਜਨ ਕੋ ਦਾਨਾ ॥੧੦॥੬੯੮॥
dekhī ṭhavar prabh bigasāe | sūraj kuṇḍ dhām phuramāe | tab bisarānt disaṭ tar ānā | ketak dīo dijan ko dānā |10|698|
Seeing the place the Lord was glad, and ordered a halt at Suraj Kund; there he came to rest, and gave much charity to the learned and the needy.
ਮਥੁਰਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਬ ਆਏ । ਪੁਨਿ ਬਿੰਦ੍ਰਾਬਨ ਆਪ ਸਿਧਾਏ । ਦੇਖੀ ਕੁੰਜ ਗਲੀ ਸਭ ਠਉਰਾ । ਦੇਖੀ ਛਾਵ ਅਧਿਕ ਇਕ ਅਉਰਾ ॥੧੧॥੬੯੯॥
mathurā dekh prabh jab āe | pun bindrāban āp sidhāe | dekhī kuñj galī sabh ṭhaurā | dekhī chhāv adhik ik aurā |11|699|
When the Lord had seen Mathura and come away, he went on to Vrindavan; he saw its groves and lanes and every place, and marked one spot of especially deep shade.
ਆਪ ਆਨਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਤਹਾਂ, ਅਰੁ ਮਿਸਟਾਨ ਮੰਗਾਇ । ਰਾਖਿ ਦਿਜੇ ਮੈਦਾਨ ਮੈ, ਬਨਚਰ ਭੁੰਚਤ ਖਾਇ ॥੧੨॥੭੦੦॥
āp ān baiṭhe tahān, ar misaṭān maṅgāi | rākh dije maidān mai, banachar bhuñchat khāi |12|700|
He came and sat there, and calling for sweets, had them set out in the open ground — and the forest-monkeys came and ate their fill.
ਆਪਸ ਮੈ ਲਰਿ ਲਰਿ ਮਰਤ, ਕਿਲਕਤਿ ਅਤਿ ਖੁਨਸਾਇ । ਕਉਤਕ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਅਨਿਕ ਬਿਧਿ, ਦੇਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਿਗਸਾਇ ॥੧੩॥੭੦੧॥
āpas mai lar lar marata, kilakat at khunasāi | kautak tin ke anik bidhi, dekh prabh bigasāi |13|701|
Fighting among themselves till they all but died, shrieking and squabbling in a fury — the Lord watched their many antics and was delighted.
ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਲੀਲਾ ਕਰੀ, ਬਿੰਦ੍ਰਾਬਨ ਮੈ ਆਇ । ਗਊਨ ਕਿਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨੇ ਤਬੈ, ਚਲੇ ਆਗਰੇ ਦਾਇ ॥੧੪॥੭੦੨॥
anik bhānt līlā karī, bindrāban mai āi | gaūn kiyo prabh ne tabai, chale āgare dāi |14|702|
In many ways he made his play, having come to Vrindavan; then the Lord journeyed on, moving toward Agra.
Toward Agra: the Khan-i-Khanan Receives Darshan
ਕੂਚ ਕਿਯੋ ਤਾਤੇ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਏ । ਪੰਥ ਚਲਤ ਕੇਤਕ ਦਿਨ ਲਾਏ । ਕੋਸ ਚਾਰ ਆਗਰ ਜਬ ਰਹਾ । ਕਰੋ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਇਮ ਕਹਾ ॥੧੫॥੭੦੩॥
kūch kiyo tāte uṭh dhāe | panth chalat ketak din lāe | kos chār āgar jab rahā | karo mukām prabh im kahā |15|703|
They set out and marched on from there; the road took several days; and when four kos short of Agra remained, ‘Make camp,’ the Lord said.
ਬਾਗ ਏਕ ਦੇਖਯੋ ਤਹਾਂ, ਉਤਰਿ ਕਿਯੋ ਬਿਸਰਾਮ । ਕੋਸ ਦੋਇ ਤਾਤੇ ਰਹੇ, ਬਾਦਸਾਹ ਕੇ ਧਾਮ ॥੧੬॥੭੦੪॥
bāg ek dekhayo tahān, utar kiyo bisarām | kos doi tāte rahe, bādasāh ke dhām |16|704|
He saw a garden there, alighted, and took his rest; two kos from there stood the emperor's residence.
ਖਾਨ ਖਾਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਤਬੈ, ਦੀਨੇ ਲੋਗ ਪਠਾਇ । ਬਿਨੈ ਕਰੀ ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ਕੈ, "ਦਰਸ ਦਿਖਾਵੋ ਆਇ" ॥੧੭॥੭੦੫॥
khān khān sun kai tabai, dīne log paṭhāi | binai karī kar jor kai, "daras dikhāvo āi" |17|705|
The Khan-i-Khanan, hearing of it, sent his people; with folded hands they made their plea: ‘Come, and grant us your darshan.’
ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਫੌਜ ਸੁਧਾਰੀ । ਸੂਰਬੀਰ ਜੋਧਾ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ । ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਧਾਯੋ । ਲਸਕਰ ਬਾਦਸਾਹ ਕੇ ਆਯੋ ॥੧੮॥੭੦੬॥
anik bhānt prabh phauj sudhārī | sūrabīr jodhā hitakārī | lai ke saṅg āp prabh dhāyo | lasakar bādasāh ke āyo |18|706|
The Lord arrayed his forces in many ways — brave and loving warriors; taking them with him, the Lord rode out, and came to the emperor's camp.
ਡੇਹਰਾ ਬਾਗ ਅਜਬ ਇਕ ਥਾਨਾ । ਬਸਿ ਹੈ ਤਹਾਂ ਖਾਨ ਹੀ ਖਾਨਾ । ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਤਹਾਂ ਘਰਿ ਆਏ । ਤਿਸਹਿ ਆਨਿ ਕੈ ਦਰਸ ਦਿਖਾਏ ॥੧੯॥੭੦੭॥
ḍeharā bāg ajab ik thānā | bas hai tahān khān hī khānā | kripā dhār tahān ghar āe | tisah ān kai daras dikhāe |19|707|
A wondrous place it was, a garden-mansion, where the Khan-i-Khanan himself dwelt; showing his grace the Lord came to that house, and coming, gave him his darshan.
ਦਰਸ ਦੇਖਿ ਐਸੇ ਕਹਯੋ, "ਬਹੁਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੁਮ ਕੀਨ । ਅਪਨੋ ਹੀ ਮੁਹਿ ਜਾਨਿ ਕੈ, ਦਰਸ ਆਪਨੋ ਦੀਨ" ॥੨੦॥੭੦੮॥
daras dekh aise kahayo, "bahut kripā tum kīn | apano hī muh jān kai, daras āpano dīna" |20|708|
Beholding the darshan he said: ‘Great is the grace you have shown; counting me as your own, you have given me your very darshan.’
ਚਰਨ ਕੰਵਲ ਕੋ ਹਾਥ ਚਲਾਏ । ਥਾਪੀ ਦਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਿਗਸਾਏ । ਤਬ ਤਿਨ ਅਪਨੋ ਹਾਲ ਦਿਖਾਯੋ । ਰਛਾ ਕਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਯੋ ॥੨੧॥੭੦੯॥
charan kanval ko hāth chalāe | thāpī daī prabh bigasāe | tab tin apano hāl dikhāyo | rachhā karī prabh phuramāyo |21|709|
He reached his hand to the lotus-feet; the Lord gave him the blessing-touch and was pleased; then he laid his condition before him, and the Lord decreed his protection.
ਆਦਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਾ ਕੀਨਾ । ਤਾਹੀ ਸਮੈ ਬਿਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨਾ । ਹਾਥ ਜੋਰਿ ਇਹ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਬਤਾਏ । ਉਤਰੋ ਧਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤੁਮ ਜਾਏ ॥੨੨॥੭੧੦॥
ādar bahut prabh kā kīnā | tāhī samai bidā kar dīnā | hāth jor ih bhānt batāe | utaro dhām prabh tum jāe |22|710|
He did the Lord much honour, and at that time took his leave; with folded hands he said: ‘Lord, come and alight at my home.’
Emperor Bahadur Shah Longs for the Guru's Darshan
ਬਿਦਾ ਭਏ ਤਾਹੀ ਸਮੈ, ਚਲਿ ਆਏ ਤਿਹ ਥਾਨ । ਠਉਰ ਏਕ ਦੇਖੀ ਤਹਾਂ, ਰਾਤ ਕਰੀ ਗੁਜਰਾਨ ॥੨੩॥੭੧੧॥
bidā bhae tāhī samai, chal āe tih thān | ṭhaur ek dekhī tahān, rāt karī gujarān |23|711|
Taking his leave at that time, he came on to a certain place; he found a spot there and passed the night.
ਮੋਹ ਕਹੈ ਬਰਖੈਂ ਅਬੈ, ਬਹੁਤ ਨ ਐਸੇ ਦਾਵ । ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਏ ਤਹਾਂ, ਕਰੋਂ ਆਜ ਛਿਰਕਾਵ ॥੨੪॥੭੧੨॥
moh kahai barakhain abai, bahut na aise dāv | āp prabh āe tahān, karon āj chhirakāv |24|712|
The rain-cloud says: ‘Let me pour down now — such chances do not come often; the Lord himself has come here, so let me shower him today.’
ਰੈਨਿ ਗਈ ਬਾਸਰ ਭਯੋ, ਭਏ ਆਪ ਅਸਵਾਰ । ਬਾਗ ਏਕ ਨਿਰਖਯੋ ਜਬੈ, ਡੇਰਾ ਕਿਯੋ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥੨੫॥੭੧੩॥
rain gaī bāsar bhayo, bhae āp asavār | bāg ek nirakhayo jabai, ḍerā kiyo bichār |25|713|
Night passed and day broke; he mounted up; and when he saw a garden, he resolved to camp.
ਆਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤਾਹੀ ਸਮੈ, ਕਿਯੋ ਬਾਗ ਮੈ ਧਾਮ । ਠਉਰ ਬਾਂਟ ਸਬ ਕੋ ਦਈ, ਕਿਯੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥੨੬॥੭੧੪॥
āp prabh tāhī samai, kiyo bāg mai dhām | ṭhaur bāṇṭ sab ko daī, kiyo tāh bisrām |26|714|
The Lord at that time made his lodging in the garden; he shared out places to all, and took his rest there.
ਕੇਤਕ ਦਿਨ ਬੀਤਤ ਭਏ, ਯਾਦਿ ਸਾਹਿ ਇਮ ਕੀਨ । "ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਏ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਵਨ, ਹਮ ਕੋ ਦਰਸ ਨ ਦੀਨ" ॥੨੭॥੭੧੫॥
ketak din bītat bhae, yād sāh im kīn | "prabh āe kāran kavana, ham ko daras na dīna" |27|715|
Some days went by, and the emperor recalled it thus: ‘For what reason has the Lord come, yet given us no darshan?’
ਕਹਿ ਭੇਜੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਂ ਤਬੈ, "ਦਯਾ ਕਰੋ ਕਰਤਾਰ । ਦਰਸ ਦਿਖਾਯੋ ਆਪਨਾ, ਅਪਨੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ" ॥੨੮॥੭੧੬॥
kah bhejī prabh son tabai, "dayā karo karatār | daras dikhāyo āpanā, apanī kripā dhāri" |28|716|
He sent word then to the Lord: ‘Show your mercy, O Creator; grant me your darshan, and bestow your grace.’
ਸੂਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਿਕਟ ਬੁਲਾਏ । "ਹੋਹੁ ਤਯਾਰ" ਤਬੈ ਫੁਰਮਾਏ । ਚੜਤ ਕਰੀ ਐਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਧਾਏ । ਫੇਰਨ ਬਾਦਸਾਹ ਕੇ ਆਏ ॥੨੯॥੭੧੭॥
sūr siṅgh prabh nikaṭ bulāe | "hohu tayāra" tabai phuramāe | chaṛat karī aise prabh dhāe | pheran bādasāh ke āe |29|717|
The Lord called the brave Singhs near — ‘Be ready,’ he then ordered; and so, mounting up, the Lord rode out to visit the emperor.
ਆਨਿ ਸਾਹ ਕੇ ਧਾਮ ਪਰ, ਸੂਰ ਖਰੇ ਤਹਾਂ ਕੀਨ । ਆਪ ਧਾਇ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗਏ, ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਗਿ ਇਕ ਲੀਨ ॥੩੦॥੭੧੮॥
ān sāh ke dhām para, sūr khare tahān kīn | āp dhāi andar gae, siṅgh saṅg ik līn |30|718|
Coming to the emperor's residence, he posted the warriors there on guard; the Lord went inside himself, taking one Singh along.
ਖਾਸ ਡੇਵਢੀ ਆਨਿ ਕੈ, ਸਿੰਘ ਤਹਾਂ ਖਲਵਾਇ । ਆਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗਏ, ਅਪਨੋ ਰੂਪ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੩੧॥੭੧੯॥
khās ḍevaḍhī ān kai, siṅgh tahān khalavāi | āp prabh andar gae, apano rūp banāi |31|719|
Reaching the private threshold, he stationed the Singh there, and the Lord went within, arrayed in his full splendour.
ਚੜੀ ਕਮਾਨ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਬ ਸਾਰੇ । ਕਲਗੀ ਕੀ ਛਬਿ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੇ । ਲਟਕਤ ਚਲਤ ਤਹਾ ਚਲਿ ਆਏ । ਸਾਹ ਪਾਸ ਬੈਠੇ ਇਮ ਜਾਏ ॥੩੨॥੭੨੦॥
chaṛī kamān sasatr sab sāre | kalagī kī chhab apar apāre | laṭakat chalat tahā chal āe | sāh pās baiṭhe im jāe |32|720|
His bow was strung, every weapon in place; the splendour of his plume beyond all compare; swaying as he walked he came along, and went and took his seat beside the emperor.
ਸਾਹ ਆਪ ਤਿਹ ਓਰ ਨਿਹਾਰਾ । ਦਰਸਨ ਦੇਖਿ ਭਯੋ ਮਤਵਾਰਾ । ਤਨ ਮਨ ਧਨ ਤੇ ਅਧਿਕ ਬਿਕਾਨਾ । ਕੰਵਲ ਦੇਖਿ ਜਯੋਂ ਭੰਵਰ ਲੁਭਾਨਾ ॥੩੩॥੭੨੧॥
sāh āp tih or nihārā | darasan dekh bhayo matavārā | tan man dhan te adhik bikānā | kanval dekh jayon bhanvar lubhānā |33|721|
The emperor looked toward him, and beholding that darshan grew enraptured; beyond body, mind, and wealth he was won over — as the bee is enchanted at the sight of the lotus.
The Emperor's Homage and the Elephant Spectacle
ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ! ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰਾ । ਨਿਹਚਲ ਕੀਨੋ ਰਾਜ ਹਮਾਰਾ । ਦਯਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਹਮਰੇ ਘਰਿ ਆਏ । ਤਖਤ ਬਖਤ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ! ਪਾਏ ॥੩੪॥੭੨੨॥
dhann dhann prabh ! alakh apārā | nihachal kīno rāj hamārā | dayā dhār hamare ghar āe | takhat bakhat tum te prabh ! pāe |34|722|
‘Blessed, blessed are you, Lord — unseeable, boundless one! You have made my rule secure; showing mercy you have come to my house; throne and fortune, O Lord, I have received from you.’
ਕਲਗੀ ਔਰ ਪੁਕਪੁਕੀ ਆਨੀ । ਖਿਲਅਤ ਏਕ ਸਾਹ ਮਨ ਮਾਨੀ । ਸਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕੋ ਭੇਟ ਚੜਾਈ । "ਖੁਸੀ ਕਰੋ ਤੁਮ ਸੋ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ" ॥੩੫॥੭੨੩॥
kalagī aur pukapukī ānī | khilaat ek sāh man mānī | sāh prabh ko bheṭ chaṛāī | "khusī karo tum so ban āī" |35|723|
He brought a plume and a jewelled pendant, and a robe of honour that pleased the emperor's heart; these the emperor offered to the Lord as a gift: ‘Be pleased — this offering has been fittingly made to you.’
ਤਾਹਿ ਸਮੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨੇ ਫੁਰਮਾਯੋ । ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਾਹਿ ਪੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ । ਬਸਤੁ ਤਾਹਿ ਪਾਸ ਉਠਵਾਏ । ਬਿਦਾ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਡੇਰੇ ਆਏ ॥੩੬॥੭੨੪॥
tāh samai prabh ne phuramāyo | andar sāh pai siṅgh bulāyo | basat tāh pās uṭhavāe | bidā bhae prabh ḍere āe |36|724|
At that time the Lord gave his order, and called a Singh inside, up to the emperor; he had the gifts taken up beside him, then took his leave and returned to his camp.
ਕਰਤ ਅਨੰਦ ਕੇਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਘਨੀ । ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕੋ ਬਨੀ । ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਬਖਾਨੋ । ਉਮਡੀ ਸਜਾਮ ਘਟਾ ਅਤਿ ਮਾਨੋ ॥੩੭॥੭੨੫॥
karat anand kel prabh ghanī | prabh kī upamā prabh ko banī | ek divas kī kathā bakhāno | umaḍī sajām ghaṭā at māno |37|725|
The Lord took his fill of joyful play; the Lord's glory befits the Lord alone. Let me tell the tale of one such day — a magnificent cloud-bank, as it were, came surging up.
ਮਾਨੋ ਘਟਾ ਉਮਡੀ ਚਹੁ ਓਰਨ, ਤੇ ਰੰਗ ਸਜਾਮ ਬਨੇ ਗਜ ਆਏ । ਮਾਤੇ ਮਤੰਗ ਫਿਰੇ ਯਹ ਭਾਂਤਿਨਿ, ਜੇਤੀ ਕਹੈ ਸਬ ਤੇਤੀ ਸਰਾਏ । ਪੇਲ ਦਿਯੋ ਗਜ ਨੇ ਗਜ ਕੋ, ਇਤ ਤੇ ਉਤ ਕੋ ਯਹ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਉਠਾਏ । ਸਾਹਨ ਸਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਮਰੇ, ਤਿਹ, ਬੈਠ ਝਰੋਖੇ, ਗਇੰਦ ਲਗਾਏ ॥੩੮॥੭੨੬॥
māno ghaṭā umaḍī chahu orana, te raṅg sajām bane gaj āe | māte mataṅg phire yah bhāntini, jetī kahai sab tetī sarāe | pel diyo gaj ne gaj ko, it te ut ko yah bhānt uṭhāe | sāhan sāh prabh hamare, tiha, baiṭh jharokhe, gaind lagāe |38|726|
As if a cloud-bank had surged up on all four sides, so came the elephants, arrayed in dark magnificence; the maddened tuskers roamed in such a way that, however much one praises them, so much are they worthy of praise. Elephant shoved elephant, tossing one another this way and that; and our Lord, the King of Kings, seated at the balcony window, set the great beasts to their sport.
ਥਾਨਨ ਤੇ ਛੁਟ ਕੈ ਦੌਉ ਕੂੰਚਰ, ਤੋਰਿ ਜੰਜੀਰਨ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਆਏ । ਸੂੰਡ ਸੋ ਸੂੰਡ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਦਈ, ਪਗ ਸੋ ਪਗ ਜੋਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਨਸਾਏ । ਰੀਝ ਪਰੀ ਬਿਗਸਯੋ ਕਰਤਾ, ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਸਿਰਦਾਰਨ ਦਾਮ ਦਿਵਾਏ । ਸਾਹਨ ਸਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਮਰੋ, ਤਿਹ ਬੈਠ ਝਰੋਖੇ ਗਇੰਦ ਲਰਾਏ ॥੩੯॥੭੨੭॥
thānan te chhuṭ kai dauu kūñchara, tor jañjīran sāmuhe āe | sūṇḍ so sūṇḍ milāi daī, pag so pag jor kare khunasāe | rījh parī bigasayo karatā, tin ke siradāran dām divāe | sāhan sāh prabh hamaro, tih baiṭh jharokhe gaind larāe |39|727|
Breaking loose from their posts, the two tuskers snapped their chains and came face to face; trunk locked with trunk and foot braced against foot, they raged; delighted and well pleased, the Lord had coin given to their mahouts; and our Lord, the King of Kings, seated at the balcony window, set the great beasts to fight.
ਦਉਰ ਕੇ ਧਾਇ ਬਰੋਬਰ ਜਾਇ, ਮਿਲੇ ਦੋਉ ਆਇ ਸੁਨੋ ਗਜ ਖਾਏ । ਆਪਸ ਮੋ ਮਿਲ ਟੱਕਰ ਲੇਤ, ਕਰੇ ਇਹ ਭਾਂਤਿਨ ਜੋਰ ਸਵਾਏ । ਏਕ ਭਜੇ ਇਕ ਪਾਛੇ ਪਰੇ, ਅਤਿ ਪੇਲਤ ਜਾਤ ਮਰਾ ਬਲ ਲਾਏ । ਸਾਹਨ ਸਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਮਰੋ, ਤਿਹ ਬੈਠ ਝਰੋਖੇ ਗਇੰਦ ਲਰਾਏ ॥੪੦॥੭੨੮॥
daur ke dhāi barobar jāi, mile dou āi suno gaj khāe | āpas mo mil ṭakkar leta, kare ih bhāntin jor savāe | ek bhaje ik pāchhe pare, at pelat jāt marā bal lāe | sāhan sāh prabh hamaro, tih baiṭh jharokhe gaind larāe |40|728|
Charging and running they met head-on — hear it — the two elephants closed and clashed; colliding together they took the shock, exerting ever greater force; one broke and fled, one pressed close behind, driving on with deadly strength; and our Lord, the King of Kings, seated at the balcony window, set the great beasts to fight.
ਲੀਲਾ ਅਨਿਕ ਅਨੇਕ ਬਿਧਿ, ਅਨਦਿਨ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਹਾਤ । ਸਬ ਕਉਤਕ ਕੈਸੇ ਕਹੋ, ਕਛੁ ਕਛੁ ਬਰਨਤ ਜਾਤ ॥੪੧॥੭੨੯॥
līlā anik anek bidhi, anadin karat bihāt | sab kautak kaise kaho, kachh kachh baranat jāt |41|729|
His plays were many and of countless kinds, passing day upon day; how could I tell all his wonders? — I set down only a little, a little.
Days of Joy; the March Onward
ਕੇਤਕ ਮਾਸ ਅਵਰ ਦਿਸ ਭਏ । ਅਨੰਦ ਕੇਲ ਸੋ ਦਿਵਸ ਬਿਤਏ । ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਤੇ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਆਵੈ । ਦਰਸਨ ਅਗਮ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੪੨॥੭੩੦॥
ketak mās avar dis bhae | anand kel so divas bitae | des des te saṅgat āvai | darasan agam purakh ko pāvai |42|730|
Several more months passed in that quarter, days spent in joyful play; from land after land the sangat came, and received the darshan of the Unfathomable One.
ਕਛੁ-ਇਕ ਕਥਾ ਸਾਹ ਕੀ ਆਈ । ਚਾਹਤ ਸਾਹ ਅਵਰ ਦਿਸ ਜਾਈ । ਰਾਜਪੂਤਨ ਪੈ ਅਤਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਲਾਏ । ਸਾਹ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਉਤੇ ਸਿਧਾਏ ॥੪੩॥੭੩੧॥
kachhu-ik kathā sāh kī āī | chāhat sāh avar dis jāī | rājapūtan pai at dhun lāe | sāh bahādar ute sidhāe |43|731|
Now a matter of the emperor arose: the emperor wished to go to another region; his mind was set upon the Rajput country, and Emperor Bahadur set out that way.
ਬਾਗ ਛੋਡਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜੀ ਤਬੈ, ਗਊਨ ਤਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਕੀਨ । ਐਤਬਾਰ ਪੁਰ ਆਨ ਕੈ, ਧਾਮ ਤਾਲ ਪਰ ਦੀਨ ॥੪੪॥੭੩੨॥
bāg chhoḍ prabh jī tabai, gaūn tahān te kīn | aitabār pur ān kai, dhām tāl par dīn |44|732|
The Lord then left the garden and journeyed on from there; coming to Etbarpur, he made his lodging beside a tank.
ਅਲਪ ਦਿਵਸ ਕਛੁ ਤਹਾਂ ਬਿਤਾਏ । ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੋਰਾਵਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਆਏ । ਅਨੰਦ ਭਯੋ ਬਿਧਿ ਅਨਿਕ ਅਪਾਰਾ । ਦਯਾ ਕਰੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਤਾਰਾ ॥੪੫॥੭੩੩॥
alap divas kachh tahān bitāe | sāhib jorāvar siṅgh jī āe | anand bhayo bidh anik apārā | dayā karī pūran karatārā |45|733|
He spent a few days there; Sahib Zorawar Singh ji arrived; joy of boundless kinds arose, and the Perfect Creator showed his grace.
ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਮੰਗਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ । ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਬਾਜਨ ਬਜਵਾਏ । ਯਾਚਤਿ ਜਾਚਕ ਆਨਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ । ਦਿਜੇ ਇਨਾਮ ਅਨਿਕ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥੪੬॥੭੩੪॥
anik bhānt maṅgal guṇ gāe | anik bhānt bājan bajavāe | yāchat jāchak ān apārā | dije inām anik bisathārā |46|734|
Auspicious praises were sung in many ways, and instruments of many kinds were played; countless supplicants came to beg, and lavish gifts were bestowed in abundance.
ਐਸੀ ਦਾਤ ਕਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਾਤੇ । ਅਲਖ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਬਿਧਾਤੇ । ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜੀ ਬਿਗਸਾਨਾ । ਅਨਿਕ ਹੁਲਾਸ ਜੀਵ ਮੈ ਆਨਾ ॥੪੭॥੭੩੫॥
aisī dāt karī prabh dāte | alakh nirañjan purakh bidhāte | anik bhānt prabh jī bigasānā | anik hulās jīv mai ānā |47|735|
Such bounty did the Lord, the giver, bestow — the unseeable, immaculate, primal Ordainer; the Lord was gladdened in many ways, and boundless delight arose in every soul.
ਅਨਿਕ ਬਧਾਵਾ ਅਨਦਿਨ ਗਾਵਤ । ਸਰਬ ਅਨੰਦ ਸਿਖ ਸਬ ਪਾਵਤ । ਕੇਤਕ ਦਿਵਸਨ ਅਵਰ ਬਿਤਾਯੋ । ਕੀਨੋ ਕੂਚ ਸਾਹ ਪੈ ਧਾਯੋ ॥੪੮॥੭੩੬॥
anik badhāvā anadin gāvat | sarab anand sikh sab pāvat | ketak divasan avar bitāyo | kīno kūch sāh pai dhāyo |48|736|
Songs of blessing were sung day upon day, and all the Sikhs found complete bliss; several more days passed, and then he broke camp and rode to rejoin the emperor.
