Chapter 17

Chapter 17 · The Stand at Chittor

As Bahadur Shah's campaign moves through Rajputana, the poet recounts a warrior's lone stand and martyr's death at Chittor, the crossing of the Narmada, and the Guru's counsel of peace.

The Rajputana Campaign

chale kūch dar kūch kar kūch aise | kahe āpane āp hī āp jaise | gae majal dar majal aise sidhāe | tabai sāh ke kaṭak ke nikaṭ āe |1|737|

March upon march they made, marching on in such a way, each as if moving of his own accord; stage upon stage they went and pressed on, until they came near the emperor's army.

chale sāh ke sāth hī sāth māno | kiyo kūch kete isī bhānt jāno | laī gher ajamer kar jer dhāyo | nikaṭ jodh pur jāi ḍaṅkā bajāyo |2|738|

They went right along with the emperor, as it were; know that they made many a march in this same way; he laid siege to Ajmer, brought it to submission, and pressing on to Jodhpur, sounded the war-drum near it.

tabai rājapūtān aise nihāro | pare ān kai sāh lai kaṭak bhāro | larai kai bhajai kai marai juddh kai kai | kiyo rāj bīchār mantrīān lai kai |3|739|

Then the Rajputs saw it thus: the emperor had come and fallen upon them with a heavy army — whether to fight, to flee, or to die in war; and the king took counsel with his ministers.

kiyo mantū kete ride ek āno | kiyo kām aise bhalī bhānt jāno | milo sāh so jīt siṅghān rājā | phate kā tabar sāh kā ant bājā |4|740|

Much counsel was taken, and they brought their hearts to one mind; the work was done in good order, know it well: the raja Ajit Singh made his peace with the emperor, and at the last the drum of the emperor's victory was sounded.

kiyo sāh ajamer mai khub thānā | gae jo ude pur ḍarā ant rānā | tinai sāj kai put tā pai paṭhāyo | milā sāh so ān ānand pāyo |5|741|

The emperor made a fine station in Ajmer; and the Rana of Udaipur, at the last, took fright — he arrayed and sent his son to him, who came, made his peace with the emperor, and found gladness.

jabai sāh ne jīv mai mant ānā | tabai dacchhanan des kīno payānā | chale kūch dar kūch kar kūch bhāre | liyo saṅg sīpāh umarāv sāre |6|742|

When the emperor took a resolve in his heart, he set his march toward the southern country; march upon march, heavy marches they made, taking with him all his soldiers and nobles.

Zorawar Singh's Stand at Chittor

chale sāhib sāh ke sāth sāth | kare jo chalit āp hī āp nāthai | tabai nikaṭ chītaur ke āp āyo | jorāvar siṅgh sāth dekhai sidhāyo |7|743|

The Master travelled along with the emperor, the Lord who works his wonders all of himself; then he came near Chittor, and set out to see it, with Zorawar Singh at his side.

chaṛo jāi chītaur kar kām aise | naphar doi kai tīn the sāth taise | naphar dhās ko doi nīche paṭhāe | bhalī bhānt so āp ḍaṅkā bajāe |8|744|

He climbed up to Chittor to do a certain deed; two or three attendants were with him thus; he sent two of the servants down below, and himself, in good order, sounded the war-drum.

bhayī ḍaṅk kī ghor sun chor daure | mile dhās lote bhayī bāt aure | mahā kop kope kiyo kām bhāre | kiyā juddh ketā dou ant māre |9|745|

At the fearsome roar of the drum, raiders came running; they fell upon the servants and plundered them, and the matter turned otherwise; in great fury he raged and did a mighty deed — how great a battle he fought, and at the last he slew the two who came.

chalo krodh so kop kai ant āe | tinai ān tih ṭhor aise batāe | taje hāth te vār hathiār sāre | kahe bain bhārī su aise nihāre |10|746|

Blazing with wrath, more of them came on at last; reaching that spot they announced themselves so; they let fly from their hands every stroke and weapon, hurled heavy taunts, and glared like this.

lae bāṇ pānan ghane vār kīne | kite dusaṭ māre tahān ḍār dīne | bache jo bhaje jāi toī pukāre | chaṛe dusaṭ kete nahīn vār pāre |11|747|

Taking arrows in hand, he loosed volley upon volley; how many villains he slew and cast down there; those who survived fled and raised the alarm; and though many wicked ones charged, they could not get past his blows.

nahīn bār lāgī ghane dusaṭ āe | chahū or te ān kai sasatr bāhe | gaḍī bhūm te āp barachhī ukhārī | laī hāth māhī kiyo vār bhārī |12|748|

No time passed before many villains came; from all four sides they closed in and plied their weapons; he pulled up a spear stuck in the ground, took it in hand, and struck a mighty blow.

girī lob pai lob aise pukāre | kahūn ḍār te tor kai phūl ḍāre | guhe bhānt tā kī kiyo hār kīne | bhae ant bāsī taū ḍār dīne |13|749|

Body toppled upon body, so they cried out; as though a hand had snapped flowers from a bough and scattered them; woven as into a garland he laid them in rows; and those who fell dead at the last, those too he cast aside.

chahū or te chor kar sor daure | mahā ant āe bhayī bāt aure | tahān ān kai sasat pai sasat jhāre | kahān kai bakhāno lage vār bhāre |14|750|

From all four sides the raiders ran with an uproar; a great many came at last, and the matter turned otherwise; coming there they rained weapon upon weapon — how can I tell of the heavy blows that landed?

lagajo vār aise bahajo sūnn bhārī | bhayo lāl bāgā bhijī deh sārī | kahūn rain jāgā kidho prem mātā | chaṛī jo khumārī chale ḍagamagātā |15|751|

Such blows landed that the blood flowed heavy; his garment turned crimson, his whole body drenched. As one wakeful through the night, or as one drunk with love — such an intoxication rose in him that he walked reeling.

phire jhūmatā jhūlatā sasat lai ke | ghane dusaṭ māre mahā judh kai kai | kiyo ant sākā bhalī bhānt sūre | kriā kāl kī kai bhae ant pūre |16|752|

He roamed swaying and reeling, weapon in hand, and slew many villains, waging a mighty battle; at the last the warrior made his saka in the noblest way, and fulfilling the rite of death, came whole to his end.

His Light Merges into the Light

nahīn jān jāī kahā khel kīnā | gire jujh kai kai kahū gaun kīnā | larajo siṅgh dūjā vahai ant dhāyo | kidho bāj kai sāhib pās āyo |17|753|

It cannot be known what wondrous play he made — whether he fell fighting, or passed away elsewhere; the second Singh too fought on and at the last rushed forth, or, breaking free, came away to the Master.

sunī sāhiban phauj tāte paṭhāī | tahān kī nisānī tahān beg āī | lakhī jāi kai bain aise uchāre | baḍo suramā hai kiyo loh bhāre |18|754|

The Master heard of it and sent a force there; word of that place came back swiftly; going and seeing it, they spoke these words: ‘A great hero was he — he crossed heavy steel and waged a mighty war.’

tahān tāt hī kāl kālai ralāyo | milī jot son jot nah ant pāyo | kiyo khel karatār nah jāt jānī | kahā kai dikhāī kahā disaṭ ānī |19|755|

There, at once, the mortal frame was gathered back into the Timeless; his light merged into the Light, and no end could be found. The play the Creator makes cannot be known — what he shows, and what he brings into sight, is beyond all telling.

chale jo tahā te ghane kūch kīne | nahīn rāh āge sunī sāh jī ne | gae narabadā pai mukāman batāe | kite dajos bīte tahān te sidhāe |20|756|

Moving on from there they made many marches; the emperor heard there was no road passable ahead; they came to the Narmada and made their camp; some days passed, and from there they set out again.

The Battle Beyond the Narmada; the Guru Counsels Peace

gae narabadā pār kar kūch kete | rahe siṅgh pīchhe lare dhās lote | tahān juddh kīne ghane log māre | bhaje chhoḍ kai dhās te jā pukāre |21|757|

Crossing the Narmada they made many marches; some Singhs stayed behind, and the servants who fought were plundered; a battle was fought there and many were slain, while some, abandoning the goods, fled and raised the alarm.

tabai siṅgh darabār lai dhās āe | chaṛe phauj lai ke ghane turak dhāe | tabai bhed siṅghān aise uchāre | liyo dhās tih ṭhaur kai juddh bhāre |22|758|

Then the Singhs came to the court with word of the servants; a great many Turks rode out with their force; and the Singhs disclosed the matter thus: ‘The goods were seized at that place with a heavy battle.’

chalī krodh kai phauj tih ṭhaur āī | karaige mahā juddh aise batāī | kahī sāhib ne ṭhāḍho nihāro | nahīn juddh kī ṭhaur aise bichāro |23|759|

The force marched out in wrath and came to that place, declaring they would wage a mighty battle; but the Master said: ‘Stand and look well — this is no place for battle,’ so he counselled.

ite mai chale dhām ke ant āe | tahān sāhiban siṅgh bānan chalāe | liyo mār asavār do tīn jaise | rahī bakat hū kai bhalī phauj aise |24|760|

Meanwhile they moved and came at last to their camp; there the Master and the Singhs let fly their arrows; some two or three horsemen were struck down, and the fine force was thus broken and held back.

tabai sāhiban bain aise uchāre | sulah kāj ko mān siṅghai nihāre | daī sīkh tāko tahān hī paṭhāyo | tahān te chal siṅgh tih ṭhaur āyo |25|761|

Then the Master spoke these words; for the work of peace he looked to Man Singh; he gave him counsel and sent him to that very place, and Man Singh set out and came there.

kahī bāt ketī nahīn ek jānī | karaigā mahā juddh jo bāt mānī | mahā mand kope ghane vār kīne | nahīn vār kīnā taū siṅgh jī ne |26|762|

Much was said, but the foe heeded not a word, bent on waging a great battle unless his terms were met; in wicked fury he struck many blows — yet the Singh returned not a single stroke.

binā hukam kaise karon judh bhārā | ihai jān kai jīv nah vār ḍārā | gire jhūm kai vār ketān lāge | diyo sīs āpān prabh purakh āge |27|763|

‘Without my Lord's command, how should I wage a great battle?’ — holding this in his heart, he cast no blow; reeling under blow upon blow he fell, and gave up his own head before the Lord, the Primal Being.

taū kop dusaṭān golī chalāī | gire dob kai tīn siṅghai tahāī | ite māh aure ghane log āe | kiyā bīch tākā tahā te paṭhāe |28|764|

Then the villains in their fury fired their guns, and two or three more Singhs fell there; meanwhile many other people came up, a mediation was made, and the foe was sent away from there.

ihai hoi bītī tahān, kete divas bihāi | burahānan pur jāi kai, base dhām mai dhāi |29|765|

So it came to pass there, and several days went by; then, going on to Burhanpur, they hastened and settled in their lodging.

Here ends the seventeenth chapter of the book Sri Gur Sobha — the battle of the sahibzada and the aforesaid march. May it be complete; may it be blessed.
