Chapter 18

Chapter 18 · The Merging of Light into Light

The account of the final time at Nanded: the Pathan's blow, the Guru's word that the Timeless One kept him, his last utterance of the Fateh and his merging of Light into Light, the eternal declaration that the Khalsa is his own form, and the poet's closing call to utter the Name.

The March to Nanded on the Ban Ganga

kite divas bīte chalā sāh āge | prabh ko kite divas tih ṭhaur lāge | likhā sāh pharamāna, "nah ḍhīl kījai | hamai ān kai apanā daras dījai" |1|766|

Some days passed, and the emperor moved on ahead; the Lord tarried some days at that place; the emperor wrote a decree: ‘Make no delay; come to us and grant us your darshan.’

likhā sāh kā jo tihī ṭhaur āyā | liyā hāth māhī hiye kaṇṭh lāyā | paṛā bā aṅk tahān aise uchāre | kiyā kūch tāhī samai nā sambāre |2|767|

The emperor's letter came to that place; he took it in his hand and pressed it to his heart and throat; reading the words there he spoke thus, and made his march at that very time, without delay.

nahīn phauj līnī tahān te sidhāe | kiyo kūch tapatīj ke pār āe | tahān siṅgh āe, kiyo khūb sāmā | kiyo tīn kai chār tāhī mukāmā |3|768|

He took no army, but set out from there; he marched and came across the Tapti; there the Singhs came, and a fine gathering was made; he made his camp there three or four days.

kite siṅgh rākhe, kite sāth līne | kite des hī des ko bhej dīne | kite divas bīte tahān te sidhāe | mile sāh so, sāh ḍaṅkā bajāe |4|769|

Some Singhs he kept, some he took along, and some he sent off to their various lands; some days passed, and from there he set out; he met the emperor, and the emperor sounded the drum in welcome.

sare hī suārī prabh daras dīnā | harakhavant hui kai bidā sāh kīnā | bidā hoi kai āpane dhām āe | chale sāth hī sāth tāte sidhāe |5|770|

In full procession the Lord gave his darshan; and, filled with joy, the emperor took his leave; taking his leave, the Lord returned to his own lodging, and they moved along together from there.

ghane kūch kīne, kite divas lāe | chale bān gaṅgānā pai ant āe | sunī ṭhaur nāder hai nāu tā kā | kiyā dhām tāhī gurū nām jā kā |6|771|

They made many marches, and it took some days; moving on, they came at last to the Ban Ganga; he heard the place was named Nanded; and there the Lord — whose name is Guru — made his dwelling.

kahā sāh tih ṭhaur kīne mukāmā | rahe misal dar misal kar log sāmā | kite divas bīte tihī ṭhaur āe | kathā ant kī jet bhākho sunāe |7|772|

The emperor, it is said, made his own camp at that place, the people arrayed rank upon rank; some days passed there — now let me tell and recount, as far as I can, the account of the final time.

The Pathan's Stealthy Approaches

sunī sākh aise paṭhāṇ ek āyo | kachh bāt kai kai prabh pās dhāyo | dharī doi kai tīn kai bain mīṭhe | nahīn ghāt lāgī ghane log ḍīṭhe |8|773|

So the account is heard: a certain Pathan came; making some talk, he pressed close to the Lord; he laid two or three sweet words before him — but no stroke found its mark, for many people were watching.

bidā hoi kai dhām ko beg dhāyo | gae divas do tīn so pher āyo | dharī tīn kai chār kai bain aise | nahīn ghāt lāgī chalā ant taise |9|774|

Taking leave, he hurried quickly to his lodging; two or three days passed, and he came again; he laid three or four such words before him — but no stroke found its mark, and in the end he went away as before.

isī bhānt so dāj ke tān āyo | nahīn ghāt lāgī, nahīn dāv pāyo | ghanī bār āyā, liyo bhed sārā | samā sajām kā kām kā, jo bichārā |10|775|

In this same way he came, stalking for his chance; but no stroke found its mark, and no opening was got; many times he came, and learned the whole of the way, watching for the moment fit for the deed he had in mind.

The Blow at Nanded

dinan ek sajāman samai dusaṭ āyo | sunī sāhiban ant tā ko bulāyo | ḍige jāi baiṭhā ki prasād dīnā | gahī musaṭ lo dusaṭ mukh māh kīnā |11|776|

One day, at the fitting time, the villain came; the Master, at the last, called him near; he came and sat close, and the Guru gave him prasad; the wretch took a fistful and put it in his mouth.

nahīn siṅgh koī tahān pās aure | rahe ek hī undh soī gayo re | ite mai prabh āp bisrām līnā | gahī dusaṭ jamadhār ur vār kīnā |12|777|

No other Singh was there beside them; only one remained, and he had lain down and fallen asleep; meanwhile the Lord himself had taken his rest; the villain seized a dagger and struck a blow to his side.

kiyo vār aisā ki dūjā lagāyo | lage aur ke āpanā vār lāyo | kiyo vār ekai nahīn aur kīnā | liyā mār kai dusaṭ jānai na dīnā |13|778|

He struck such a blow, and made to strike a second; but before another could land, the Lord returned his own blow; one stroke he made, and needed no other — he slew the villain and let him not escape.

karī āp avāj hai ant koī | chahū or te āi dekhant soī | bhaje tāh sāthī ghane siṅgh dhāe | liyo mār dono nahīn jān pāe |14|779|

The Lord himself raised a call — was anyone there? From all four sides they came and saw. The assailant's companion fled, and many Singhs rushed after; they slew them both, and let neither get away.

bhayo sor apār tih ṭhaur aise | pralai kāl kī ghor sunīant jaise | bhae dhīr adhīr nā dhīr āyo | lae kāḍh ke khaṛag nah jāt lāyo |15|780|

A boundless outcry rose at that place, as though one heard the roar of doomsday; the steadfast lost their steadiness, and no calm would come; they drew their swords, but there was none left to strike.

kahī āp ne, "vār nah koi ḍāro | muā hai kadī kā yahān te utāro | " liyā tāh utār aise bichārā | prabh aṅg bāgā kidho raṅg ḍārā |16|781|

The Lord himself said: ‘Let no one strike a blow; he is already dead — carry him away from here.’ So, mindful of his word, they bore him away; and on the Lord's body his garment was, as it were, dyed crimson.

‘Sri Kal ji Has Kept Me in His Protection’

kinī nā nihārā, prabh ghāv lāge | rahai bhūm kai jvān dīne na āge | tabai ān siṅghān ur hāth lāe | lage ghāv kārī tabai disaṭ āe |17|782|

No one had yet seen that the Lord had taken a wound; the young men stayed low upon the ground and let it be seen by no one; then the Singhs came and laid their hands upon his breast, and only then did the grievous wound come into sight.

kiyo sok siṅghān dui hāth māre | "kahān khel kīnī kaho karan hāre ?" tabai sāhiban bain ih bhānt kīne | "karī muh rachhiā srī 'kāl jī ne | " 18|783|

The Singhs made lament, beating their hands together: ‘What play is this you have made — tell us, O Doer of all?’ Then the Master spoke these words: ‘Sri Kal ji, the Timeless One, has kept me in his protection.’

sune bain aise kachh dhīr āyo | tabai jāi siṅghān sāthan bulāyo | tahān tāh kirīān kai ghāv sīnā | uṭhe jo prabh tor kai tāh dīnā |19|784|

Hearing such words, some steadiness returned; then the Singhs went and called the physicians; there they stitched the wound with a silken thread — but when the Lord rose up, the stitches broke and gave way.

karī aur kirīān rainan bitāī | bhae bhor tih ṭhaur malaman lagāī | dinan tīn kai chār aise bihāe | tabai daras kai kāj bahu siṅgh āe |20|785|

They stitched it once more and passed the night; at dawn they laid balm upon the place; three or four days passed in this way, and then many Singhs came for the sake of darshan.

une ān dar pās aradās kīnī | sunī jo prabh kān so mān līnī | diyo daras dīvān kai kai apārā | dayāvant hu kai sabho ko nihārā |21|786|

They came and made ardas at the door; the Lord heard it with his ears and granted it; holding a boundless darbar he gave his darshan, and, full of compassion, looked upon them all.

daras dayā kar kai diyo, bahur bidā sab kīn | upamā apar apār kī, nautan naval navīn |22|787|

Showing compassion he gave his darshan, and then gave all his leave; the praise of the boundless, infinite One — ever fresh, ever new, ever renewed.

A Hymn to the Boundless One

kīno bichār | upamā apār | nautan navīn | sāhib prabīn |23|788|

They reflected on the boundless praise — ever new, ever fresh — of the all-wise Master.

bhav ke utār | bharaman bidār | akhare apār | aise nihār |24|789|

Ferrying souls across the sea of existence, shattering delusion — the imperishable, boundless One — thus they beheld him.

nah vār pār | sāhib sumār | beant ant | nah tant mant |25|790|

He has no near shore nor far — the Master beyond all reckoning; endless is his end; no tantra, no mantra can bound him.

simarant sant | jānant kant | hai aṅg saṅg | anabhai anaṅg |26|791|

The saints remember him; they know him as their Beloved; he is ever at their side, close as their own limbs — the fearless, formless One.

sikhan apār | kar kai bichār | sabadan uchār | eko nihār |27|792|

The countless Sikhs, reflecting deeply, uttered the Word, beholding the One.

bhav ke utār | bharaman bidār | hoi harakhavant | pekhayo biant |28|793|

Ferried across the sea of existence, their delusion shattered, filled with gladness, they beheld the Infinite.

chintā bisār | diṛ jīv dhār | man mai anand | sabh tor phand |29|794|

Forgetting their care, holding the soul firm, bliss in the mind, every bond broken.

hui kai khalās | man pūr ās | charanan nivās | kīno bilās |30|795|

Set free, their heart's hope fulfilled, dwelling at his feet, they took their delight.

man bach karam kar bhāvanī, satigur siu liv lāi | sānt bhaī tih te tabai, kīno darasan āi |31|796|

Devoted in thought, word, and deed, they fixed their love upon the True Guru; peace came to them then, as they came and took his darshan.

The Final Word: Waheguru ji ki Fateh

diyo daras aise kahā kai uchāro | bidā hoi līnā sabhī te nihāro | kite divas bīte samai ant āyo | "karo beg prasādi" aise batāyo |32|797|

He gave his darshan and spoke thus; taking leave, he looked upon them all; some days passed, and the final time drew near; ‘Prepare the prasad quickly,’ so he said.

kachh bhojanan khāi kai nīr pīnā | bharosā sabho ko bhalī bhānt dīnā | gaī aradh rātan gharī chār aure | bhae sabad rūpī karī bāt aure |33|798|

He ate a little food and drank some water, and gave good assurance to all; when midnight had passed and four gharis more, he became one with the Word, and turned the talk to that which lies beyond.

ṭer karī tāhī samai, jāge siṅgh apār | vāhagurū jī kī phate, kahī ant kī bār |34|799|

He gave a call at that time, and countless Singhs awoke; ‘Waheguru ji ki Fateh!’ he proclaimed at the last.

sun sandes bisamai bhae, at bhayān man hoi | man kī man hī mai rahī, pugī bāt na koi |35|800|

Hearing the tidings they were struck with wonder, and their hearts grew full of dread; what was in their hearts stayed locked in their hearts, and no word would come forth whole.

bisamai sabh hoi rahe man mai, kachh kī kachh hoi gaī ab hī | mil kai sabh siṅghan tāh samai, ih bhānt bichār kiyo tab hī | "sasakār karo nis hī kai samai, nikasai nahī bhānu" kahayo jab hī | im kāran kāraj ko kar hī, mil jot so jot gaī tab hī |36|801|

All were struck with wonder in their hearts — what was one thing had, in an instant, become another. All the Singhs gathered at that time and took counsel thus: ‘Perform the last rites while it is still night, before the sun rises,’ so it was said. For this reason they set about the task; and his light merged into the Light at that very hour.

sammat satrah sai bhae, painsaṭh barakh pramān | kātak sud bhaī pañchamī, nis kāran kar jān |37|802|

It was in Sammat seventeen hundred and sixty-five, on the fifth day of the bright half of Katak — know it to have been in the night.

kaise kaho nahī jāt kahī, kit kī kit hī sar pher dharī | kahayo kachh aur karī kachh aur su, aur kī aur hī hoi parī | tih nāh na ant biant su santa, ikant japant agant harī | jih jānat hai kachh kī kachh hī, bidhanā kachh aur kī aur karī |38|803|

How to tell it? — it cannot be told; what belonged to one place he set turning toward another. He said one thing and did another, and what was to be one way came to be quite another. That Lord has no bound, no end — boundless; the saints, in solitude, remember the unreachable Hari. What men think to be one thing turns out another — the Ordainer makes of one thing something wholly other.

dekhan ko jo hī bhaī, jānat sagal jahān | kiyā charit karatār ko, nah kah sakat vakhān |39|804|

What came to pass to the sight of all, the whole world knows; but the wondrous play the Creator made — no one can tell its full account.

‘The Khalsa Is My Own Form’

ek divas kāran te āge | mil kai siṅgh pūchhane lāge | "kavan rūp āpan prabh kīno ?" tin ko jvāb bhānt ih dīno |40|805|

One day, some while before this event, the Singhs gathered and asked: ‘In what form will the Lord abide as his own?’ To them he gave this answer thus.

vāh samai gur bain sunāyo | khālas apane rūp batāyo | "khālas hī so hai mam kāmā | bakhas kiyo khālas ko jāmā |41|806|

At that time the Guru uttered his word, and declared the Khalsa to be his own form: ‘With the Khalsa alone is my work; upon the Khalsa I have bestowed my own robe.’

khālas mero rūp hai, ho khālas ke pās | ād ant hī het hai, khālas hī mai bās |42|807|

‘The Khalsa is my own form; I abide with the Khalsa; from the first to the last I hold them dear; in the Khalsa alone is my dwelling.’

khālas bās kahāvai soī | jā kai hirade bharam na hoī | bharam bhekh te rahai niārā | so khālas satigur hamārā | " satigur hamārā, apar apārā, sabad bichārā, ajar jarī | hirade dhar dhiānī, ucharī bānī, pad nirabānī, apar parī | gat mit apāre, bahu bisathāre, vār na pāre, kiā kathanan | tav jot prakāsī, sarab nivāsī, sarab udāsī, tav saranan |43|808|

‘He alone is called of the Khalsa's abode in whose heart there is no doubt, who stays apart from delusion and mere outward garb — that Khalsa is our True Guru.’ Our True Guru, boundless and beyond, contemplating the Word, bears the unbearable; holding him in the heart the meditator utters the sacred Word — the state of nirvana, the highest attained. His nature and measure are boundless, vast in expanse, without this shore or the far — how can it be told? Your light shines forth, dwelling in all, yet detached from all — we are in your refuge.

oṭ tihārī dharat ho, avar na jānat koi | man bach karam kar bhāvanī, simarat ho im toi |44|809|

The poet speaks: ‘I hold to your shelter, and know no other; in thought, word, and deed, with devotion, thus I remember you.’

Utter the Name, Gobind, Gobind

kāhū ke māt pitā sut kāhū ke, kāhū ke bhrāt mahān balakārī | kāhū ke mīt sakhā hit sājana, kāhū ke greh birājat nārī | kāhū ke dhām mahā nidh rājati, āpas mo kar hai hit bhārī | hohu dayāl dayā kar kai prabhu, gobind jī muh ṭek tihārī |45|810|

Some have mother and father; some, a son; some a brother of great might; some have friends, comrades, loving companions; in some a wife adorns the home; in some a house shines with great treasure — and among these they hold their strong affections. Be gracious, show your mercy, O Lord Gobind ji — mine is only your support.

Your Name alone I chant, day upon day — hold this thought, and make no delay; the moment slips ever away, and this human body wears thin, moment by moment. Look and see: cast off the great poison, leave vice behind, and do some good. Sing forever the praise of the One alone, and joining the sadh-sangat, drink the nectar.

ammrit pī lai re manā, kar santan kī sev | duralabh mānas janam kari, saphal simar gur dev |47|812|

O mind, drink the nectar; serve the saints; make fruitful this rare human birth by remembering the Guru-Lord.

Forget not — sing the virtues of the Creator, and grasp the reflection of your own Word. Who spoke the scripture there, who wrought the world where? — that One is without beginning, boundless and yours. When Death comes it will lay you low — mark it; it looks not whether the place be fit or unfit. Boundless, O saint, is his great glory — utter the Name, ‘Gobind, Gobind!’

Filled with falsehood one dwells in such grief, and comes to a state as wretched as a beggar's; lost upon the earth he sways in attachment, while his own self flies off, leaving the body behind. Where the noose of attachment is, there the soul is snared, and the reflection on the Essence dawns not upon it. Boundless, O saint, is his great glory — utter the Name, ‘Gobind, Gobind!’

lāj ke kāj upachār kete karai, lāj ko kāj nah ek ahu re | jagat kī kāj upachār kai āvai nahīn, het akāj nah kāj sahu re | līn jāse bhayo saṅg lai nā gayo, jon hit gon kar let bhahu re | ṭer hai sant beant mahimā mahān, nām gobind gobind kahu re |50|815|

For the sake of worldly honour one makes many contrivances, yet for true honour there is not one real deed; the world's business, got by contrivance, comes not with you; loving vain works, bear not the burden of false labour. That in which one was absorbed one takes not along; for the sake of more births he loads up the sack of karma. The call goes out, O saint — boundless is his great glory — utter the Name, ‘Gobind, Gobind!’

chet achet lai chet chetan kahu, het udhār kai bāt vahu re | lobh kī līk mai jāi par hai kahu, ḍūb hai nīr bin jān gahu re | kūp ko jīv bīchār kehu karai, nikas hai nāh nai tat yahu re | ṭer hai sant beant mahimā mahā, nām gobind gobind kahu re |51|816|

O unmindful one, take heed — awaken the conscious mind; the matter is for your deliverance, mark it well. Should one fall into the rut of greed, one drowns without any water — know this, and hold fast. The soul caught in the well of the world, however it reflects, comes not out — this is the truth of it. The call goes out, O saint — boundless is his great glory — utter the Name, ‘Gobind, Gobind!’

jugat kai jog kai bhāvanī bhog lai, bhekh alekh nah hāth ahu re | jāi karavat lai hai, vare garat bīch jo hai, mīch amīch kai let bhahu re | mon gah jīv mai, basat taj sīv mai, disaṭ ākās kar nāh lahu re | ṭer hai sant beant mahimā mahā, nām gobind gobind kahu re |52|817|

By ritual method, or by yoga, or taking pleasure in mere fancy, or by outward garb — the Unknowable is not caught in the hand. One may go and take the saw of Kashi, or fling oneself into a pit — these only heap death upon the deathless self. Holding silence within, forsaking the world at some holy boundary, fixing the gaze upon the sky — still you shall not find him. The call goes out, O saint — boundless is his great glory — utter the Name, ‘Gobind, Gobind!’

nāh ih gīt man mīt to so kahe, nām kī prīt ih gīt gahu re | bhūm ko bhekh taji, bhekh alekh saji, tat bīchār bīchār lahu re | chhuṭ ho trās te oṭ kar tāh kī, saran gahu saran gahu saran gahu re | ṭer hai sant beant mahimā mahā, nām gobind gobind kahu re |53|818|

This is no mere song, O friend of the mind, that I sing to you — grasp in this song the love of the Name. Cast off the world's false garb, put on the garb of the Unknowable, and reflect, reflect, upon the Essence. Be freed from dread by taking his shelter — take his refuge, take his refuge, take his refuge! The call goes out, O saint — boundless is his great glory — utter the Name, ‘Gobind, Gobind!’

kaun hai karam pai tāh jānajo nahī, ton kī gon taj aun jahu re | sūjh re āpanā āp āpā kahu, jīvan jagat mai alap lahu re | jān ajān pai jān jānī nahīn, bhūm mai phūl jin phūl rahu re | ṭer hai sant beant mahimā mahā, nām gobind gobind kahu re |54|819|

What is this round of karma? — know it not as your true self; forsake that endless coming-and-going and go home. Understand your own Self, and know your ‘I’; see how brief is life in this world. For all your knowing, the true knowing is not known — do not, like a flower on the earth, stay puffed up in pride. The call goes out, O saint — boundless is his great glory — utter the Name, ‘Gobind, Gobind!’

chhāḍ de dhandh au bandh bandhan sabai, hoi nirabandh ik bandh rahu re | aur bekār sukh sār bīchār jo, nām uchār kar pār pahu re | ek prabh jāpanā, chhāḍ dai thāpanā, āpanā āp bīchār lahu re | ṭer hai sant beant mahimā mahā, nām gobind gobind kahu re |55|820|

Give up all worldly toils and bonds and fetters; become free of all bondage, and hold to the one bond of the Name. All else is vain — the essence of true peace, when you reflect, is this: uttering the Name, cross over. Chant the One Lord; give up false props and postures; reflect, and grasp your own Self. The call goes out, O saint — boundless is his great glory — utter the Name, ‘Gobind, Gobind!’

koṭ upāv bīchār kehu karai, pār jih te parai bāt ahu re | anik tīrab karai, jāi kāsī marai, chaṛe kedār nah pār pahu re | anik tap sādh agādh jānajo nahī, het hai aur kī aur ahu re | ṭer hai sant beant mahimā jahā, nām gobind gobind kahu re |56|821|

Though one devise a crore of contrivances, the matter of salvation lies beyond them all. One may make countless pilgrimages, go and die at Kashi, or climb to Kedar — yet one does not cross over. Countless austerities and disciplines cannot fathom the Unfathomable; true love is quite another thing. The call goes out, O saint — boundless is his glory — utter the Name, ‘Gobind, Gobind!’

lagī jo lagan te magan aise bhayo, sain asain nah jān jahu re | āp āpā gayo, āp āpī bhayo, āp bīchār jab dekh ahu re | jot so jot mil ek hī rūp hai, ek hī ek nahī aur ahu re | ṭer hai sant beant mahimā mahā, nām gobind gobind kahu re |57|822|

When such devotion takes hold, one becomes so absorbed that one knows neither omen nor ill-omen. The self-hood departs, one becomes one's own true Self; and when you look with self-reflection, light merges into Light — it is all one single form, the One alone, none other. The call goes out, O saint — boundless is his great glory — utter the Name, ‘Gobind, Gobind!’

sarab ānand gobind ke jāp te, japo nit nīt kai prīt mītā | sarab ke tant yah mant guradev ko, ek man jīt kai jagat jītā | sarab jañjār bekār chhin mai tajo, saran guradev sun gajān gītā | bhayo jaikār tuīlok chaudah bhavana, satigur khālasā khās kītā |58|823|

All bliss is in the chanting of Gobind; chant it day upon day with love, O friend. This is the mantra, the essence of all, of the Guru-Lord: conquering the single mind, one conquers the world. Cast off in an instant all the world's vain entanglements; take the refuge of the Guru-Lord, and hear the exalted song. The cry of victory rose through the three realms and the fourteen worlds: the True Guru made the Khalsa his very own.

bachan gur dev ke gajān aise kiyo, mukat kī jugat aise bichārī | rachan karatār jo racho ākār te, japaṅgī jāp sab srisaṭ sārī | tat bīchār kai jīt bolī phate, mār dūtan kiyo bhasam chhārī | bhayo jaikār tuīlok chaudah bhavana, achal pratāp gur kes dhārī |59|824|

The exalted word of the Guru-Lord the poet set down thus, and pondered thus the way of liberation: whatever the Creator has fashioned into form — the whole creation shall chant his praise. Reflecting on the Essence, victory proclaimed the Fateh; slaying the demons of vice, it reduced them to ashes. The cry of victory rose through the three realms and the fourteen worlds: unshakeable is the glory of the Guru, keeper of the unshorn form.

Here ends the eighteenth chapter of the book Sri Gur Sobha — the telling of the wondrous merging of Light into Light. May it be complete; may it be blessed.
