It can all be said in a few breaths.
Karma is memory. Whatever is done with wanting leaves a mark, as feet wear a path in grass. Memory lies in eight layers, four shared with all things and four our own. Together they make the warehouse, sanchit. A portion is packed for this life. That is prarabdh, the arrow already in flight, and carried without bitterness it sows nothing new. The arrow in the hand is ours. That is kriyaman now and agami later. The body is the field, and the sowing is today. The trap is in choosing from liking and disliking, and that is how the warehouse fills. Inclusion is the fire. Action from tera and not mera, from all and not only from favourites, empties it. And the door is grace. Karam, the second meaning of the word. Nadar, the glance that frees.
The Gurus have one word for living inside all of this. Hukam, the Will. It is not a cold code of rules. It is the living order of the One who began the play.
Nor is Hukam another word for fate. Fate says that everything is fixed. Hukam holds all of it at once: the portion that is given, the law by which deeds bear fruit, the freedom of the arrow in the hand, and the grace that opens the door. Fate has no room for a door. Hukam is the house the door is in. To walk in the Will is to carry the pack without complaint, to draw the arrow with care, to choose from inclusion and not from compulsion, and to trust the door.
In the first pauri of Japji Sahib, Guru Nanak asks the question this whole book has been circling.
kiv sachiārā hoīai kiv kūṛai tuṭai pāl |
So how do I become true? How does the wall of what is false come down?
hukam rajāī chalaṇā nānak likhiā nāl |1|
Walk in Hukam, the One's ordering will. Nanak says it was written into us from the start.
Japji Sahib, pauri 1
In the second pauri he says what follows from understanding it.
Everyone lives inside that will; no one at all stands outside it.
Nanak says: whoever truly understands that will stops saying "I did it."
Japji Sahib, pauri 2
Karma began with the self that presses the button. Here is where it ends. The one who understands the Will stops saying I did it. When the self stops pressing the button, no new seed goes into the ground. The medicine was inside the illness all along.
Beneath all of it lies the one thing that matters most. You are not your warehouse. You are not your habits, your fears, your likes and dislikes, or your worst day. Those are boxes. You are the one they are stored around. Guru Amar Das speaks directly to the mind, to the part of us that believes it is the warehouse.
man tūn jot sarūp hai āpaṇā mūl pachhāṇ |
O my mind, you are a form of the Divine Light. Know where you come from.
Guru Amar Das, Raag Asa, Ang 441
A form of the Divine Light. Not a heap of boxes. Light. The boxes are real, and they are heavy, and a person can spend a whole life among them. But they are stored in a house of light, and the house belongs to the One.
